I'm working on an image with very fine tendrils of lightning and finding I can not get a selection on those. The image is was taken late afternoon, and the tendrils are backed by medium dark grey sky. No problem getting a selection on the main bolts. I've tried using various levels of exposure for the sky during the initial processing for brightness/contrast as well as for the diff. I'm wondering if there is a limit as to how 'small' a selection can be processed. Any suggestions?

If the values are sufficiently different, you should be able to dial things in. You might need to work in phases with multiple selections if things are too similar to separate in a single attempt.
