Thank you again for sharing Greg! I remember asking you about this workflow and HDR effects on Instagram not long ago. At the time, you mentioned that the process was very complex and unstable, so you didn’t recommend it. Now, following the workflow in this video seems doable-does this mean Instagram has been updated? Or is it that these steps are now confirmed to work without issues?

Instagram has been a bit of a moving target over the year, but works great now if you know exactly what it needs for success. The key is my software (Web Sharp Pro). I spent the past couple years writing code to address numerous problems specific to sharing HDR, as well as address some concerns specific to the encoding Instagram and Threads will accept (my next update will add support for Threads HDR too). Until a month ago, my software wasn't simple enough for me to share. I am not aware of any other way to prepare the HDR image in a way which will both regain HDR and ensure a great SDR result for viewers who lack full support (though I would expect support will be more widespread once ISO gain maps become commonplace). Using the exact workflow as shown in the video will allow you to get consistently good results on Instagram. See the written post for Threads (the supported devices for uploading there are quite different, the WSP workflow is the same other than using a Threads template). gregbenzphotography.com/hdr-photos/how-to-share-hdr-photos-on-instagram/ Threads examples: www.threads.net/@gregbenzphotography

Will do that in the coming month, but it should be obvious if you just select two images in LR (same image edited once as SDR and once as HDR) and then edit in / open as smart object layers in PS. WSP will see it and show a prompt asking permission to prep the image. Then just click Sharp to export with the settings you need for a gain map.

Thanks for this video Greg! Been frustrated with way Instagram posts some of my HDR images. Do you know if this works for Threads. It was the best place for posting HDR pictures AVIF file format, but now the pictures I post with that format are all blown out. I will have to look into getting this web shop pro. I mostly edit my HDR photos on my iPad Pro. Was hoping to not have to buy another program. But it might be worth it.
@gregbenzphotography
@gregbenzphotography 10 күн бұрын
I haven’t tested Threads lately, but it did not work last I tried. I would avoid simple AVIF. It can work for HDR, but the auto-generated SDR base image is often very low quality. That’s what people will see when viewing in bright ambient light, in low power mode, etc. So it’s a problem even for HDR-capable displays. Today’s update to WSP lets you send two images (SDR and HDR) from LR to PS and basically immediately export as a gain map based on your actual edits. So there is very little work, it’s almost fully automated - and with full control of the SDR base image.

This is brilliant Greg. One question - if I process the image as an HDR in Lightroom first will the HDR edit be preserved if I then use the Export function and my WSP Auto settings to take the image into WSP in Photoshop?
@gregbenzphotography
@gregbenzphotography 10 күн бұрын
Yes, as long as you send it over correctly. If you export the dummy/temp file as “original” that should work well to keep the bit depth. And this would keep layers, which will be important if you want to provide the SDR and HDR (see the written tutorials, but if the bottom layer or group is named “SDR”, WSP will use the content as you create it - giving you 100% of both renditions in the gain map).

The file you are loading to Instagram is jpg? How will it show as HDR? jpg doesn’t support HDR. But jxl does
@gregbenzphotography
@gregbenzphotography 11 күн бұрын
A standard JPG does not. But this is a JPG with a gain map (two images in the same file). It not only offers HDR, but more importantly ensures an excellent result even if you have SDR. No tone mapping! So this is a better option than a standard JXL because (1) it is 100% backwards compatible with everything and (2) the gain map ensures vastly higher quality when full HDR support is not available. A JXL can add a gain map too, but there is basically no support. May be a great option in the future, but not anytime soon. See here for more info: gregbenzphotography.com/hdr-photos/jpg-hdr-gain-maps-in-adobe-camera-raw/

The only approach that works consistently and with high quality is the one I showed in the video. I would definitely not upload JXL or AVIF at this time. Lack of a gain map will cause serious quality issues for people who view without HDR support, and it may fail outright (sounds like your scenario).

This technology should greatly benifit digital reproduction of art. Especially that of the Old Masters, Pre-raphaelites and 20th century artist such as Maxfiled Parrish who used glazing to give their work an inner glow. This depth does not show in 8 bit srgb images. I, myself am trying to capture this effect using HDR technology and I am trying to refine my workflow. I went the still image to movie format route.

Very cool use case! Please feel free to email me if you want to brainstorm approaches. I would use photos instead of video for a very specific reason, the gain map capability for HDR photos will offer a much better and more consistent display of the finished work. There is no similar option for HDR video to achieve that level of control (not even Dolby Vision can match it, even if you could use trim passes with consumer display of the video).

@gregbenzphotography cool. Brainstorming woupd be great as there are not very many people using HDR technology for still images, let alone 15 year old RAWs. With this technology, digital images can go from the equivalent of a drug store processed print to viewing a Fujichrome Velvia transparency.

For some reason it doesn't convert any raw file from my new Sony A1 - the Rawsie people were helpful but as the product is no longer available they couldn't solve my issue. I'currently doing some tests but it now seems like after exporting my raw files as lossy compressed DNGs and re importing into LR I'm able to use the Denise tool even though the new DNG file says Mosaic Data - NO. can I just check that this is the case with you now. Also, one last thing. After exporting and creating Lossy DNG files they appear a very strangly when viewed as a thumbnail in my finder window, very dark and very green. Mac Studio. Have you any experience of this? Many thanks, Neil

There is a similar histogram feature on affinity photo 2. Which is that the histogram has a "minimum" and a "maximum" size. You can set it to something absurd like 8x the normal histogram size and you get to see all that extra juicy information. The curve adjustment tool also lets you make it adjust 8x the range that it normally should be able to adjust. Which means you can make some pretty sick looking HDR images. I've been having a lot of fun with these tools, and I'm sure people who do not wish to use adobe would love to use something else, so I am just putting this out here as an option. Also my monitor is the innocn 27m2v ($600 USD) if anyone happens to be looking for a good, cheap HDR monitor. (This is also running all on windows 11) Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Dear Greg, I hope you’re doing well. I’m reaching out because I’ve encountered some issues with HDR monitors while using my MacBook Air M3, and I was hoping to get your expert opinion. I started using an HDR1600 monitor from a Chinese company called Skyworth. It has a full-screen sustainable brightness of 1000 nits, a peak brightness of 1600 nits, and features 2,304 local dimming zones. Essentially, it’s a more affordable alternative to the ASUS ProArt Display PA32UCXR. When I enable HDR on both MacBook Air and monitor, the colors on the monitor appear very pale and washed out, except when I’m watching HDR videos-then the colors look normal. While editing in Lightroom with HDR enabled, I notice that some areas, like the sun, appear significantly brighter, which I really like, but overall the colors still seem desaturated. Is this normal behavior when using HDR monitors with Macs? Do you think I would experience the same issue if I were to use the ASUS ProArt Display PA32UCXR 32 instead? I’m trying to decide between getting a Mac Mini M4 Pro with a new monitor or purchasing a MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro. I will mainly use it to edit HDR photos. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know how to RESTORE the way Adobe used to create ENHANCED versions of, say, the DENOISE feature? In the past, it created separate raw files with the enhancement applied, which while making furhter files, can actually be useful for many uses. It labelled them ENHANCED etc. The new version, applies the denoise (the AI Denoise) to the same file. But I've found it buggy and fails to apply the setting on every image, and having denoised raws separate, can be quite useful to pass on to other users, as the noise reduction is kind of baked in.
@gregbenzphotography

There is no value in a separate file. This is the same and can be undone. You can export as a DNG and your settings will be included. Or pass a sidecar file with the RAW if you’re setup to use them.

Implementing all that work twice when you expect to make changes is not efficient. @jensvielmann7662 there is surely plenty of reusable code, but adding it to multiple pieces of software with the expectation of subsequent rework isn’t trivial either. LR includes Classic and Desktop on two operating systems, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and web. Getting it right in one place and then implementing elsewhere is much more efficient.
