Greeting, Mr. Warren. I've been watching for a while now! and at times I'm lost. This video has brought me back up to speed. The statement: " get in where you fit in" has just woke my brain up. I have played piano since childhood and have always searched for a teacher like you. Finally, i don't have a piano any more but, you're "all i need to get by." Thanks for explaining everything..

hi Warren, thanks for your teaching. could you explain the term "voicing"
@PianoLessonwithWarren6 жыл бұрын
kgromeo thanks for watching. Voicing is basically inversions, it’s all about how you decide to play the chord, especially as it relates to the right hand... deciding what note you want to be at the top of the chord

thanks for clarification

11:02 … A13(add9) doesn’t exist, does it? If it were a 13 chord, it would already include the 9, wouldn’t it? (unless we’d been told to “omit” it, but then we wouldn’t be “add”ing it back in the same ‘breath’ … ?). 🤔
@PianoLessonwithWarren Жыл бұрын
No. A 13th chord doesn’t require for there to be a 9th or 11th present, only the 7th. Therefore, the 9th can be raise (#) or lowered (b) in a 13th chord.
@kierenmoore3236 Жыл бұрын
@@PianoLessonwithWarren Perhaps it’s one of those ‘genre things’ … ? I understand that the 9 is not an essential/guide tone (in Jazz-speak), but Classical harmony, at least, is all about stacking thirds, and the presence of the lower thirds is implied … Practically speaking, a player always has ultimate choice re voicing/performance, of course - (especially) outside of the Classical genre. Chord charts/lead sheets are less prescriptive, by intent/necessity/implication, versus a full score. Polyphony also becomes a limitation on guitar etc, but that’s another story. I guess what you’re saying is that it’s only the dissonance of a major seventh interval, between the flat seventh and the thirteenth, that is necessary for/characteristic to the ‘13 chord sound’ (the third and the seventh being essential to the chord’s basic quality, whether you’re Jazz-folk or Classical-folk … :))
@PianoLessonwithWarren Жыл бұрын
@@kierenmoore3236 yeah all my theoretical teaching is based on jazz theory and harmony (even though I have a degree in classical piano performance). The use of extended harmony started to take hold in the 18th and back then that sound was considered fringe. I haven’t played or studied enough 18th-20th century classical to say how these extended harmony were treated.

Curious, have you ever heard of using two time signatures at once? Let's say in the context of percussion maybe. I heard someone beatboxing and he started the beat in 4, kept it going and then i think he shifted to 7 while keeping the 4/4 going underneath? It was really cool. Jc

Hey Warren, I’m a worship leader and a later beginner pianist. I have a burning question for you: How do song writers and musicians use the piano to form and split melodies into choir parts? I’m hoping your answer can help me and others to create harmonies for our singers that sound good. I can hear sung harmonies and can teach them that way but don’t understand the formation process clearly that professionals use. I hope this makes sense to you. I’ve had this question for some time as to the actual refined process and would appreciate your feedback. Thanks

It’s generally that section of the song that is very different harmonically, and melodically from the verse and chorus. The bridge generally comes after all the verses and choruses have been done. Also offer after the bridge there’s usually a chorus.

What determines the quality of the chords? Is it the sound or the keys (notes) you hit. I got lost when you were covering chord quality; and why they were diminished or augmented.

The arrangement of intervals determines the chord quality.

You are my favorite panio teacher on KZbin. I have one question for you. In the song Jesus there's something about that name it starts out in the key of D. But it borrows major 7th chords from the key of B such as F#7 B7 and E7. What is that technically called?
@PianoLessonwithWarren5 жыл бұрын
It’s called Temporary Tonicization
@L5Rocks5 жыл бұрын
Thank-you. I've been messing with that technique on other songs and I've found you can transpose from C major to A major. C-E-A or from C to D C-E-A-D. It all depends where you can fit it in the song. Happy practicing everybody.

Love the explanation bro. But I thought on piano you could only play a unison by playing the same key 2x's. Cuz if you play the same note above or below it then it is an octave (same note but not exactly the same pitch). For example, on Guitar you can technically play unisons on different spots/frets (cuz of human error never truly sounds the same). Again I do not have a degree in music. Just been learning through good teachers like yourself
@PianoLessonwithWarren5 жыл бұрын
Yes technically you’re correct. However, when we thing about harmony we don’t actually treat notes at the octaves as different notes, we treat them as one. My explain In this video was to show that. Sorry if you found it misleading
