This isn't what I had hoped for from color coding. I'm wishing for a program that will let me color code individuals with multiple codes, and let me see those in each person's profile. For example, Great grandpa might be included in the color for my paternal grandfather's line, plus he might be included in my one place study, and he might be buried in a particular cemetery. If I could color code all those variables with one color code set, and see that stripe to the side of his name show three different colors at once, that would be helpful. Plus, how does this method handle tree collapse? If gggg-grandpa is father to multiple different lines in your ancestry, is it putting him in all the color codes, or just one?

I kind of wish we could assign multiple colors within the same set to the same person. For example, in the ancestor lines example shown, there are two people in the 5th generation shown on the pedigree page that fall into two different colors. I would like it if we could show both colors on the person.

my thoughts exactly - I have a large family where there are descendants that fall under more than one sibling due to the marriage combinations (nothing weird, lol) - I was really hoping for a 2 color system this time... maybe in the future.....

@@christineelmore5923 I believe you could achieve close to this via groups -- it will display people who belong to multiple groups

@christineelmore5923 agreed that seeing multiple colors LIKE FTM does would be very helpful at times. Just was pointing out work around

Absolutely love this colour coding and the additional improvements. Thank you

great addition -- the more advance color coding was the thing I missed from FTM. Only criticism (without looking at the db changes)-- did it have to be limited to only 10 sets? and might this be expanded on in the future?

Why are Margaret Brown's ancestors color-coding of Amy Jenkins ancestors? In fact, early on in the video, Valentine Brown was color-coded red. Is there a bug not noticed?

This was great. Thank you! I learned some helpful things!! I Also would like to know how to change the color of fact line items in a person's profile when highlighted. Mine is currently dark blue and I'm not sure what I did to make that happen because I'm unable to see some of the icons with it being so dark. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Figured it out! Apparently I selected the High contrast grid highlight in the Display Settings. It's back to normal now.

Is there a way to color code descendants AND ancestors in one color code set? I also use Family Tree Maker and love that capability.

Yes - you have to do it in two steps but you can add decendents to a same color set - if I am understanding your question correct. Hope I am helping.

@@amandacampbell1995 I understand - We all have things we want the program to do. Mine is I want an all read for marking trouble spots of a person I am working on. Example - three possible people. I want to make the others all red - not just the standard color code.

When i add colour coding like say Ancestral Lines, and I add a new record, logically I would think that the new ancestor would be colour coded to the rule I set. But no, it is not. It is not coloured at all. Why is the saved rule not applied to the new person record?
@darleneh608

How does this change handle new records? For example, if you're color coding your paternal grandfather's ancestors, and then you add in a new person to your database, does it figure out if the new person fits that category, or do you have to add them manually?

As I understand it, you must color code any new person you add to the tree. But once the sets are established, tagging the color is rather easy.

1:28 - color-coding Amy Jenkins ancestors wiped the color on her maternal grandparents with no warning. Not a good thing. 😞 In general I find this method of showing color-coding less useful and RM7, in that it's harder to see at a quick glance especially when colors are similar ( "Is that person purple or fuchsia?") But I guess making things less colorful is trendy this decade, since this isn't the only piece of software doing it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why is the far right paternal grandfather purple and not red

Because they are on both sides of the tree, and a person will only show the last color picked because they can only show 1 color per person at a time.
