We cry over a ship because what for so long in the show we thought Merry was just a boat and home for the Strawhats was actually a Nakama, silently watching those who reside in her. Iceberg coming for them is so underrated. There is no way he'd have taken a ship towards Enies Lobby unless he had 100% faith that the straw hat crew would succeed in their mission. The faith of this man is amazing.

Yeah and iceberg also came cause he knew merry cant endure the final cruise back to water 7 just enough to let the crew escape from enies lobby.
@Crystantemum Жыл бұрын
Indeed! He learned to have faith because of what they did at Water 7, but as a master Shipwright, a raggedy ship performing a miracle for them was what pushed him over the edge. Franky showed us the wisdom surrounding ships, but Iceberg saw the religious faith that crystallized in the Merry due to a legendary crew. Tom really did pass on everything he was and knew to these two apprentices turned masters

Ussops biggest problem with them getting a new ship was that he felt like Luffy was just abandoning Merry as soon as she was a liability. Ussop had always felt insecure about his usefulness to the crew, so he figured he was going to be abandoned as soon as Luffy finally realized he was a burden. That would hurt even more than leaving, and if it was the case that he was abandoned in his time of need, it could cost him his life. Of course, the real problem was just that Luffy came to terms with Merry’s death sooner than Ussop did and did a very poor job of sympathizing with how Ussop was feeling. Luffy is surprisingly amazing at reading how people are feeling but he is always extremely direct and hard hitting. When he met Coby, he knew how Coby felt very quickly but his response was to punch him and tell him he hates him for being a wimp. Coby was able to use that hard hitting message to change his life. Before fighting Crocodile, Luffy and Vivi got into a fight about who to fight, what to do, and who might be sacrificed in this battle. Was Luffy gentle and calmly explaining why, patiently letting Vivi process the situation? No, he expected Vivi to come up to speed to where HE was at emotionally IMMEDIATELY. It really hurt Vivi but she was able to pull through. He was also holding Ussop up to his own emotional standards, but Ussop didn’t take it. Ussop, just like some other people, takes more time to process emotions and that’s ok. Luffy was right (as he pretty much always is) but he handled the situation in a way the hurt Ussop too much for him to handle. Luffy and the crew chasing down Robin to Enies Lobby and declaring war on the entire world government even when Robin said she was only going to burden them showed to Ussop that Luffy doesn’t actually abandon useless/burdensome comrades, even if the situation seems impossible. He saw it again when luffy begged the shipwrights to fix Merry when she split in two. Sanji showed Ussop that he wasn’t useless, he could do things that none of the rest of them could do. And the extra time spent on their adventure to Enies Lobby gave Ussop the time he needed to come to terms. He had told Franky that he knew deep in his heart that Merry was done for. Even after seeing the crushed keel, it didn’t change anything because what he needed wasn’t proof, it was sympathy and time to process his emotions.

After learning about EQ, I realize that Luffy does not have automatically high EQ at the start, because EQ includes both the ability to sense others’ emotion and empathy. Luffy had a hard time putting himself at others’ position, instead he pushed other out of their situation to help them break through. After his ark, his EQ will improved as he slowly learns how to empathy as well (and become a better leader with the power of empathy). And the results will be showed in WCI and Wano.

I think one of the things that sells this scene so hard is its one of the first times we see Luffy break down crying. He only had shed tears previously when Usopp leaves the crew (not counting childhood moments) and aside from that has been rather stoic throughout the series. Here Luffy completely breaks down over this heavy loss and that's when I start breaking down with him.
