As in how did he came up with the idea. He does mention that he saw them using Soru and tried to replicate it but without gear 2 it was not possible so the question is, how did Luffy come up with the idea for the gears in the first place?

I just realized one thing: The going merry marks a before and after for one piece. Merry makes the beginning of the adventure where a bunch of naive kids embark on a quest to achieve their dreams, full of fun and excitement it signals a merry adventure. When it sank it Marie the end of that phase, they had to let go of their childish ways and become serious about their dreams. Like a certain right hand said earlier they aren’t kids playing pirates. The sunny marks the beginning of this quest and makes a reference to luffy’s peak; Sun god Nika. They have reached the point of no return. It’s the end game and the sunny was there to begin their last phase of the journey.
