> 3:51 Doomguy on a hoverboard. That wasn't in the original. The original had a generic stick figure on a hovering inverted pyramid (which, by the way, looked way too big in proportion to the other objects). Since the sequence was set on Mars, I decided to have a little fun with it, so I turned the stick figure into the Doom guy. I also added a UAC logo and a Doom door on the building at 2:47, another Doom door on the building at 3:03 (in the original demo, that was a windmill), and even a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference to Total Recall at 3:20 (the Mars Today sign). The bumpmapped Mars (where Deimos disappears, like in the narration from the Doom manual) actually replaces the light sourced scene with the checkerboard floor.

+RetroDemoScene That part was also my favorite in the original demo, because it was real-time polygonal graphics, which, in 1991, I already thought would become preponderant. Still, I always thought the original environment wasn't really identifiable as Mars, so I decided to base my version on an actual ESA picture of the Cydonia region. Did you catch the references to Doom (easy) and the single reference to Total Recall (blink and you'll miss it)?

@thewelder3538 Жыл бұрын
This is a great remake, but I'd love to give some constructive criticism, if I may... Firstly, the Starfield. If you look at the way Azatoth coded his starfield, his centre of rotation is set into the Z distance. Your rotation is not. It's a bit like looking at a cube of stars from one of the faces, Azatoth's rotation is at the centre of the cube, whilst yours is like you are in the middle of the cube with the stars rotating around you. (there are no behind the camera stars in Azatoth implementation) Also your camera paths on Mars just seem a little too abrupt and need a bit of smoothing. The same around the raytraced fractal. It might have been useful to have a bit of a moving light-source too. Your line vector ball needs something too, not sure what, but looks a bit weird. Oh the Star Wars scroll and especially the Superman text was amazing. Great work.

Awesome, to see your remake....and now i remember the good old times. :-) What do you think of a remake of Second Reality from Future Crew.....would be great.
@DevilMaster5 жыл бұрын
You know what? I actually thought about that. I located a soundtrack cover I can use, and I remade the first part with the gray rocky landscape and the spaceships (in my version, I used a panoramic photograph shot by astronauts on the Moon, so that I could make the camera appear to rotate, rather than just shifting the landscape to the left). Unfortunately, there are some parts I don't know yet how to replicate, like the intersecting circular stripes colored with gradients that change where they intersect, and the fountain that spouts little spheres which then bounce around. I thought about cutting corners and using the original footage of those parts, but it wouldn't satisfy me: it would feel too much like cheating.

This is cool but seems like just a prerendered video which is fine but should be made clear in the context of demos which are mainly intended as a real-time art (even though especially early ones like this break the rule occasionally). Wouldn't really call it a remake either since it is in an entirely different category from demos.

Why is this demo so widely regarded and famous? I've seen better before and since!
@DevilMaster5 жыл бұрын
Because in 1991, when it was made, the concept of virtual reality was behing hyped to hell and back, as well as conflated with CGI and polygonal graphics. The original demo had many polygonal sections (which I revamped in my version), which guaranteed it praise and fame. Another demo that became famous for similar reasons is "Second Reality", by Future Crew.
@Foebane725 жыл бұрын
@@DevilMaster Those 3D sections I find the most BORING part of Enigma. Everything else is fine, and the standout is the HAM raytracing anim. I also don't think much of Second Reality, neither.
@DevilMaster5 жыл бұрын
@@Foebane72 Hmm... maybe that sequence too (at the time) was conflated with what people thought virtual reality to be, because it had a 3D look. It's actually just 8 looping frames, with very little differences between one and the next to shrink the size of the animation. If anything, I find it to be an example of making something look more advanced than it actually is. Instead, creating the 3D sequences actually required greater coding skills, considering the architecture they ran on.
@Mnnvint5 жыл бұрын
It has great music which works really well with the 3d sequences, and it's also technically pretty impressive (more so when you consider Azatoth had only been coding for two years at the point he made it). Full 3d "worlds" were fairly rare in demos in those days. Also, Phenomena were good at marketing. They had great distribution.
@dava000074 жыл бұрын

@DevilMaster4 жыл бұрын
I wasn't happy with just remaking the original. Phenomena made it to see what they could do with their tools and skills in 1991, with no self-imposed limitations; I made this remake to see what I could do with my own tools and skills in 2015, equally with no self-imposed limitations.
