To get the facts right: the Poles broke the commercial Enigma (3 rotors and no plugboard) in Dec 1931 and this was the machine the Reichsmarine were using. The full military Enigma (+2 spare rotors and the plugboard) was rolled out to the German forces in 1938. That locked the Poles out so they gave everything they knew to British & French intelligence in July 1939. The first break in the military Enigma was made by Dilly Knox in Jan 1940 at Bletchley Park - how do I know, I work there!!!

If you think cracking Enigma was a pain in arse you should read up on breaking the Lorenz code (used by senior German leaders like Hitler) which in comparison makes Enigma look like a children's toy.

@sebi2036 PLEASE get your facts right: the Poles broke the commercial Enigma in Dec 1931. Dilly Knox (who was one of the great codebreakers of WWI) bought one in Vienna in 1926 and brought it back to the UK where we reverse engineered it so we knew how it worked. He had also been breaking the Italian Enigma codes since 1936. The Poles never broke the military version - Knox did, see my previous post. Harris's book was a FICTIONAL story and only loosely based on just one or two events.

@psandbergnz I really do not understand why no one (unfortunately including you) gets this, also, I immediately recognize people who haven't read the novel: This film is an adaptation of a BOOK, "Enigma" by Robert Harris. During the time this film plays, March/April 1943, Turing supposedly stays in the United States, taking part in negotiations. Tom Jericho (as the protagonist) tries to get into the 4-rotor code again; Also, Jericho IS NOT MEANT TO BE Turing. Why is that so hard to comprehend??

@stah1973. Please see my previous post: we already knew about the commercial Enigma (used by the Reichsmarine) and had reverse engineered it long before the Poles gave us what they knew in July 1939. The info they gave us were the last few pieces in the puzzle that Dilly Knox needed to break the military Enigma in Jan 1940 at BP. The vast majority of Turing's work had little to do with the Poles as his level of mathematics was way above theirs. Why don't you visit BP and find out the truth??

I found this film quite disappointing, although it was well acted etc. The problem with it is that it is far too unhistorical (and cynical!) to be inspiring or interesting. Turing (the code breaker) was a completely different character in real life (for a start he was 100% gay!). It could have been just as exciting by keeping closer to historical fact. To me, it is basically a waste of time.

@Maciekityle. You really are blinkered aren't you? READ all my posts here on this subject and you'll find out what the truth of the matter is! The Poles broke the COMMERCIAL Enigma, Dilly Knox broke the MILITARY Enigma which was a more complex machine that the Poles couldn't break. The Bomba and Zygalski sheets ONLY worked with the commercial Enigma. Turing's Bombe machine was way ahead of the Bomba and worked totally differently. And finally, what lies about Enigma, what are you talking about?
