Freezer method most definitely does work and it’s less work that this one. I weigh before and after and get 1lb almost exactly. Freeze small bottles and use a “donor” tank that is warm. I refill in Summer so the tank doesn’t need warming. Take only one bottle at a time from the freezer and they will fill perfectly without clumsily fiddling around with tiny relief valves.

Thanks. I have used the freezer method. The key is to have the big tank setting in the sun before filling the frozen bottle. The difference in temperature will cause the warmer gas ( high pressure ) to go into the frozen bottle ( low pressure ) takes just a minute. Your method is great for when the tanks are same temperature . Always enjoy your videos and your giving spirit .

I've done it this way for a few years now and the problem I have run in to every now and then is that the pressure relief valves don't always re seat causing a small leak. The newer the tank the less chance you have of that valve not re seating. I ended up switching to the flame king refillable tanks. It's just easier and faster. You spend a few more bucks on the initial purchase but in the long run you're still saving money refilling tanks vs buying new ones and you don't lose a lb of propane here and there when the pressure relief valves don't seal.

I have worked in the hazmat compressed gas business for over a decade..A strong suggestion and words on staying safe..the company I work for had a major gas plant fire/inferno. The lesson learned was during the hottest part of the summer, about 100+ degrees, some Liquid propane and other flammable gas cylinders began spilling and venting exessive gas liquid and vapor which found an ignition source. It was deduced that they were over filled because the vent valves can wear out or fail. Now the company saftey procedure is to always, ALWAYS check the Tare weight of the bottle and only fill exactly the amount of liquid weight allowed to prevent overfilling that triggers to much venting or over flow of liquid from the valve. Also flammable gas should never be stored in an enclosed space especially in heat..example a car or trunk.

Always be sure to weigh the tank after filling. The easy way is to keep a full tank from the store to be used as a reference. Use a 3' 1x4 resting on some sort of fulcrum. Balance it with nothing on the board. Then set both tanks on the board at once. The newly filled tank should balance with the reference tank. If too light, add more gas. If too heavy, bleed off the excess. It is important to not over fill the tanks. Early on I over filled several tanks to the point that some gas was oozing out the relief valve. The tanks ballooned over night and would no longer sit flat on the picnic table. The paint had actually crinkled on the tank. Not wanting to experience a rupture, I actually had to bleed these tanks and dispose of them. Lesson learned.The freezer method does work and that was how I over filled the tanks. Freeze them once and do the initial gas loading. You'll only get a third to half a tank. Freeze them a 2nd time and fill them more. Be careful to gage how long to leave the valve open on the 2nd fill to prevent over filling. Then use the balance method to weigh the tank until properly filled.

I would like to add something of my own experience. We refill the little bottles too, using them in a Little Buddy. We have had two Little Buddy fires. Our first Little Buddy was bought 5 years ago. It lasted two years then had a fire flare that burned the elements and top side, from reusing green bottles. That was 2013. So we got another one with a two year warranty. That one just recently flared and ruined itself. (After three years) The only reason we could think of was that the threads on the bottles get worn after a time, and when it is loaded to the Little Buddy, if not perfectly seated, a fire results. So, we made a promise to throw out the little green bottles more regularly. Of course, it says on the bottle not to refill, but they are very expensive to replace.

What a great video to watch. I have used this method several times. If near an empty large tank, tip the large tank to empty all the propane out of the larger tank, When I have used this method, it took 30 seconds to fill a 16 oz cylinder. 10 minutes is not right at all. You are not pulling the vale stem out far enough to open the valve. I get a full tank weight of 30.5 oz. every time.
@beepseatsfindingfoodtreasu87566 жыл бұрын
Putting the 1lb. Tank in the freezer is reducing the temp. Inside to make transference of the liquid propane easier. The colder the empty tank is the faster it fills. Don't know the exact science of it but it works. I have heard both good and bad about pulling out the pop off valve. Can't say I've done enough playing around with it to offer any opinions on the matter. But everyone I've talked to is in one piece and not a ghost so I imagine it's just a matter of preference. Nice to see an actual van dweller showing this method instead of some goober in his backyard playing with some new toy he ordered off the internet. I do weigh my bottles after filling just to be sure they aren't over filled. If they are I let out some pressure to allow for heat expansion. Jamie's right about that! They do need a little wiggle room for it.

Works if you are ok with 12 oz. If you use these on a buddy heater you may eventually plug the regulator. That's why we use filters with 20 lb cylinders. Crud in the tank will Get in your green bottle. Just saying.

+Jerry Deming good point. I agree.
@brik325446 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. I thought the filters were mainly used in liquid-draw propane systems (used with vehicles and forklifts). In theory when you use the canister upright, you are only feeding vapour into your buddy heater so no filter should be necessary. I have found gunk in some propane and butane tanks. mainly small surface rust particles and the stenching additive that some manufacturers add (ethyl mercaptan).
@fendert13846 жыл бұрын
The reason for the filter is due to the inner wall of the hose breaking down over time .Mr Heater also makes a better hose that doesn't require a filter. I have one on the big buddy heater.
@TernProp6 жыл бұрын

I bought refillable propane bottles online...they are the thick shelled ones like a heavy tank.....it's just for ease of mind....I wouldn't refill the thin walled green ones, not because it blows up, but because of no sure fire way to make sure it's properly filled or overfilled. Maybe manufacturers would get the hint, and go "green" if people started buying the heavier grade ones.

So I do have a scale and for the record my tanks were 13 oz empty and 33 Oz with the factory fill. I wrote those weights on the box I keep my refill adaptor in for good measure. I had great success just now by freezing the empty tanks, filling for round 1, then freezing a second time and filling a second time- this got me actually overfilled a hair to 35oz. I’m not a fan of messing with the pressure relief valve because I could def see those not reseating airtight after grabbing it with pliers a few times. I just went and did some laundry while I was waiting for the tanks to chill out the second time. Shrug.

If I may can I help you save your heater. The gas you get in the bottle is clean .Because 20 lb.ers are always used upright there never cleaned.When you tip that tank vertical all the rust, scale and moisture go into the bottle then into clog orifices. Use a full tank and lay it on its side. Your method can easily over fill a bottle so I'am glad to see you weigh . Over fill a bottle and bend that relief valve and you know what you got.

Don’t use pliers like that. The chance of a spark when they slip like that is pretty good. Besides all you have to do is unsrew it a couple of turns like you would a valve stem on your car tire. It’s not only a lot safer it’s also a lot easier.
@enigmaticnomadics6 жыл бұрын
Great idea Jack! I hate those plyers! Hemostats work too.
@enigmaticnomadics6 жыл бұрын
Jack, for the sake of my own research, you mention that the chance of a spark when the plyers slip is pretty good. You didn't say possible, you said pretty good. I can't seem to find one single report on the web of this happening. Surely there must be several accounts of this happening and causing a disastrous result if what you are saying is true. Can you send me those links? If you can, I will take this video down. I don't want to get anyone hurt. I just need the evidence of your assertion. Thank you.
@iamjackalope6 жыл бұрын
My comment wasn’t based on any known cases of this happening. When ever you have two ferrous metals strike each other you have a high likelihood of a spark. That’s all. It’s kind of like smoking while fueling your car. You can do it 100 times without incident then one day you go boom.
@brik325446 жыл бұрын
Definitely something to keep in mind. Getting a spark out of a pair of pliers gripping a valve shaft is quite difficult but maybe not impossible if it is made from steel. When you go to a refill station to fill your 10 or 20lb cylinders, the operator uses a screwdriver or a spanner to open the venting valve. The safety factor here is that the tap assemblies on all cylinders are made form BRASS and not steel. This is the same for the much more dangerous acetylene cylinders. So now the question is: Is the safety valve on a Coleman canister made from steel or a non sparking metal like aluminium or brass?
@iamjackalope6 жыл бұрын
Its the type of thing if you where purposely trying to make a spark you probably couldn’t but then there is that one time. Just saying, why even take the risk when all you have to do is turn the valve out. Plus it’s so much easier. But yea the pental is likely made of brass.

Those valves get weak after a while on those disposable tanks after a while so it's best to throw them out if they start leaking. I once had four of the disposable bottles in my van,it got too hot and the pressure release valves went off while I was in Wal-Mart. When I activated the electric starter for the vehicle, it blew all the windows out of my van and started a fire. NEVER store the small bottles in a hot van. It's best to leave them at a camp site or something. After that, I made a bumper hitch and a storage box with lock for storing flammable stuff OUT SIDE the van. Leave them at the campground or stash them in the woods somewhere and come back for them later. Unless you want to see your vehicle blow up.

Glad to hear that this was useful Heath. Also a hose can be used with the adapter as long as the green bottle is lower and the donor bottle is upside down. I should have shown that too! Have fun catching all those fish and don't forget the solar phone charger. Haha!

Enigmatic Nomadics yea I'm trying to find me that solar charger but out of my price range right now. been down all winter either my kidneys or lupus gout bone spurs in both feet. just can't make money for me or my group. all my extra goes to my daughter stuff and the group. so me I have to weight a while. but praying I can have a yard sale soon cause I need a lot of stuff to get ready for summer. and thanks sir I'll catch all I can I have to eat more due my kidneys. but thanks sir. god bless.

Cool, been doing the freezer method for few years. $ 6.99 for one 1lb greenie at the 'convenience' store!

The freezer method mean you don't have to purge it?
@grumpy13114 жыл бұрын
@@filoIII correct! I freeze the small 1 lb tank for overnight, then have the 20 lb tank ambient temperature, or in a warmer location. Turn the larger grill tank upside down to transfer liquid rather than gas. Have to do it quickly as the smaller 1 lb tank will warm quickly in the sun and limit transfer. The cold condensed bottle will allow the warmer tank fuel to fill without purge. The trulicky part is the grill tanks have a safety feature that clicks the valve closed if too great of free flow . So the valve must be opened very slowly at first to get the transfer started. It works great

TLDNW. First 3 min could have been done in 30 sec and whole video in 5 min or less. Glad you scaled them at the end. 80% of 1LB is about 13oz so your method works great.

I’m working on condensing videos down more moving forward. I agree.
