For those of you with kids… My family didn’t have much money when I was a kid. So many of my friends were given Barbie houses for Christmas. I wanted one but my parents couldn’t afford it. I then came up with an idea when I went with my mom to go grocery shopping. I convinced her to let me bring home 8 boxes the store didn’t need that used to hold canned goods. I glued those boxes together, used my mom’s scrap fabric, used popsicle sticks, etc… I learned to look at things with a creative mind. I ended up building the coolest and best Barbie doll house ever. The neighborhood girls liked mine much more than their store bought ones. Two years later I babysat for some kids. The little girl wanted a dollhouse, but her family didn’t have the money for it. I surprised her one day when my brother helped me walk my homemade Barbie house over to her. This little girl was so thankful!

It depends. Since you obviously live in an area with lots of boulders, that means everyone in your area will either already have their own boulders or have many public areas they can take them from. So they would have no reason to pay you for yours, unless it's only because they have no vehicle to transport boulders. You would have to be in the unique position of being close enough to an area with no boulders so you could deliver or they could pickup and be a good deal for both parties. I live in Florida so very few rocks and boulders here. The homes and businesses I've seen here with boulders as part of their landscaping obviously came from out of state and must have cost a lot. Because of that, I was shocked that those boulders "only" cost $350 each! I was expecting a lot more. Probably because I expected it to include delivery, which I assume that price does NOT.

I'm a prop maker, here's how I would approach it. First stick, with any kind of tape, crumpled balls of newspaper (various sizes, anywhere from the size of a marble to a Bible) to the cardboard boxes, then wrap the form in chicken wire (zip ties to connect segments) THEN hit it with a mallet /hammer. This will retain the organic deformations best. Then plaster gause wrap two layers over the chicken wire. Hair dryer will set it in 5 mins. The result will be a feather light plaster form and you can reuse the boxes for the next one, even the chicken wire if you put a plastic dam in between. Then apply the cement (less dry volume will mean it doesn't set so fast, dry, or have to be applied so hurried, as you did, to keep it above the chicken wire - my method will save ingredients, money, and be vastly lighter). Concrete additives can be used for added strength (perhaps avoid fibreglass in favour of natural fibres like straw/ hemp or heshen cloth are all great). You can make the form complete (without an open base/hole) to give it more surface structural tension thus stress is better displaced. Optionally apply a texture with a rubber stamp (or I personally would just roll another stone over it to make the impression, stamping it to look real, talc to stop it sticking). That's how I would have approached it.

Hey Mr. happy ! Here’s a blast from Canada. I was a concrete truck driver for a couple of years. One day, when picking up my aggregate, (ready mix) concrete. asked Lafarge concrete supplier, how can I slow the process down of drying, so that the inside of the drum of my concrete truck would be easyto clean. He told me, bring a large bottle of (Coca-Cola) and pour it into the drum. So at the end of the day, I added a little bit of water and poured the litre of Coca-Cola into the drum. I would spin the drum for five minutes to work the Coca-Cola into the side walls of the inside of the drum. It works perfectly on slowing the process of concrete down for its drying property! PS. Be frugal when adding it to the concrete, you wish to make your rocks up for. Too much Coca-Cola, and days later it’ll still be wet ! PS - PS always remember (things go better with Coke) !!!

I used to make replica stone sinks. Cast sink shape in concrete with chicken wire re-enforcing, then when dry put on your top coat. Difference with mine was I added peat into the top coat. This has the effect of encouraging moss and lichens to grow on the surfaces, also where lumps of peat washed out, it formed pits and crevasses in the surface. Sinks were then used as planters or water features.

Pretty darn nice. The address rock rocks. I have seen some faux rocks similar to yours made with heavy brown craft paper, which is the outer layer of cardboard. They wrinkle them to suit the texture they want. You can also use the crinkled paper to imprint the texture on the wet cement/mortar. Our local zoo has some freaking huge ones made in this fashion. Another idea is to use plastic automotive bumper clips for attaching the wire. They are cheap, low profile, smooth heads, and the large disc head should help secure it really well. Great job. 💯👍thank you so much 💖 use card board to flatten , place on an area you want a garden put something heavy on it so it won't blow away, leave it for a couple of weeks , it will kill off the grass and roots and the worms will come up and nibble on the card board and help to loosen and fertilize the soil . After 2 or 3 weeks the soil under the card board is nice and soft , you can then turn that soil with a shovel , remove and remaining grass or weed roots and you can add 10-10-10 fertilizer to the soil as your turning it and some composted cow manure to help fertilize the soil to plant your garden . You do have to pull up any grass or weeds while they are little and easy to pull up. But easy way to make a garden spot in your back yard 💖🙏 plant your plant starts like tomatoes 🍅🐝,or seeds like bush green beans ( they grow really fast ) as soon as you see ripe green beans start picking them ( the more you pick the more you get with green beans ) . Oh and plant cantaloupe melon 🍈, they sprawl but they shade out under them so no weeds come up 🙂 just water really good soaking the soil nicely and then let it go awhile , deep down drink then wait awhile maybe 1 wk or so then water again 💖🙂 keep them happy and they should produce for you 💖🙂🍈🐝🍅🙏💯👍 Then at the end of the growing season pull up your plants that are dying back after harvest, put those plants in a compost pile and add your leaves and any grass to the compost pile leaves that uncovered for the winter and that compost will break down so you can add that back into your graden the following spring 🌼🌱 Turn up your soil after pulling up your garden plants to help discourage any weeds or grass and I think the snow fall has nitrigen in it so it helps your soil. Then the following spring turn up your garden again and add your compost back into the soil then plant your new garden 🌞🏡 Oh and add your coffee grounds to your compost pile 🙂 it will help your compost pile break down quicker 🌱🌞🍈🌼🌼🐝 And coffee grounds don't seem to draw critters , no need to add kitchen scraps the coffee grounds and grass should do the trick 💖💯🐝 Coffee grounds to your compost pile will help it break down quicker 🌱 and doesn't seem to draw critters .

A few tips having done this before. One if you can try to fill in any large gaps between the boxes and the mesh. You can use bits of cardboard, craft paper, packaging material, even paper towels. The idea here is to just save some of the thickness on the first layer in building it out. Too thick and it'll start to crack and cause issues in those really thick areas. Two, I've done a paper Mache type setup and it worked extremely well. Shop towels soaked in plaster or mortar mix works really well to add a layer that you can manipulate and sculp (and its easy as hell). Three, wire brushes can sculpt partially cured material pretty well. Four, I recommend sealing the rocks with a masonry paint or sealer. Then just work on faux finishes (look at pictures of real boulders and dry to color match, also tossing sand in there is great for texture)

If you want mortar or concrete to set faster, add Plaster of Paris (chemical formula CaSO4·1/2H2O) and if you want it to set more slowly, just add regular sugar. Much cheaper with more control this way. The more you add the faster (or slower) the setting time will be. Note that the strength decreases as the sugar content increases. Concrete mix truck drivers carry bags of sugar with them to keep the concrete from setting in emergency situations if there is a mechanical failure.

Nope. We have molds of real stones and sides of cliffs , mountains etc, and have fiberglass shredder shooters and cement shooters. Spray a layer. Roller the layer to get them to bond better. Repeat as often as needed. After drying in the sun remove the molds and paint the rocks any way from granite to sandstone. Whatever the project calls for. Sometimes we'd make unique stone carvings and make molds from them too. Trying to build rockscape from scratch for each project is too time consuming when we can make hundreds of panels and stones from molds and just configure them how we want to
@BigHackAttack2 ай бұрын
That insulation board is expensive but far easier to work with than mortar mix. Can carve it with any type of blade, hot wire it, carve letters with a router, etc. I suppose the cost of the insulation board would be offset to an extent by not needing mortar and chicken wire. Still kicking around ideas and techniques for my 20' tall Easter Island moia heads, but my current thinking is foam.

Sentimental rocks… yep, that’s me. 😂 …my dad was a science teacher. Every “pretty rock” we found was studied (“that’s another piece of quartz, kiddo”) and our favorites were kept. I even have one from college, which I collected for a creative writing assignment and kept as a pet rock afterwards. 😂 My dad had a mineral and rock collection as a teacher and just because he thought they were neat. It’s mine now.😆 Sorting through it to cut down what I’m keeping was a lot harder that I expected. Mostly because they’re “pretty rocks” like neat geodes, large pieces of mica, and various sparkly stuff. 😅🤣

@kellybraun70482 ай бұрын
@@jimmylarge1148 lol, true. It’s fascinating stuff, though “quartz” is a rather broad category, since the mix of oxygen and silicon that is quartz is a super common mineral. Sand is mostly quartz, after all. We had mostly milky quartz in the area; I loved how it stood out from the darker colors. Flint, chert, and jasper are all technically quartz, but it’s better to tell a 5yr old something is flint than another type of quartz. 😆

One of the things I learned that you can do with cardboard (for very small projects compared to this one) is how you can wet it into a mush, blend it in a blender (small batches) and compress it into a mold to make a heavy duty MDF cardboard. One of the examples would be how someone turned one or two medium amazon boxes into a small Bluetooth speaker housing. The cardboard compresses quite far, and when it dries out, it maintains its compression, so finding the mold is actually the hardest part of the whole process.

When I was growing up, my family didn't make a lot of money. We desperately needed some giant rocks for our garden. I can't tell you why, but we REALLY needed them. Anyways, my dad used this method to fabricate the rocks we needed. He used cardboard, straw, sawdust, and chicken wire as the body. Then he used regular cement for the rock parts. Thank goodness we were able to make those rocks, as we would not have been able to afford them otherwise. Well, thanks for this video. It made my day knowing that you used this method for making rocks. Nostalgia to the max.

One time, my child informed me she was making a huge round teapot for bookweek out of a cardboard box and I was troubled about how a large square or rectangle corrugated cardboard box could become round. And her solution (which I felt silly for not seeing) was to soak the cardboard box in the bath of water, then it will soften and she could drape, or wrap wet cardboard around a big empty garden pot, upside down. I was amazed, and she got it all in place with thin rope pulling it in around and round. After it dried off in the sun, it had the hard cardboard shape and was removed off the garden pot. From here you could use cement, but she covered it in a few layers of craft glued fabrics and so forth for her project. Getting different ideas from other people is very much appreciated, and I am amazed that a child thought to wet the cardboard to manipulate the shape and dry it back to sturdy. And mixing all these ideas together helps to get better project products, so thanks for inspiring me, us, with new ideas. I need a few rocks for my garden, to protect my flowers out front from dogs weeing on my plants. A few big rocks could really help.
