One in the past, another in the present, and they planned to make the two character to be overlapping with each other's story. Even the Etymology of the name "Laguna" and "Squall" describe it all. Several definition on Laguna; lagoon in the sea, serene body of water, or in Spanish it is a condition of mental black out (unconsciousness) or another definition is the "the friend" from Basque language. All the trait befit Laguna Characteristic and his party, and it's a completely contrast with Squall, which is refers to tempestuous windstorm of rain, Squall's characteristic as intovert and unfriendly. And the link between these two opposite characters, both in terms of the etymology of their name and their characterisic is Raine, which is means a certain condition of weather to create temptuos windstorm. So from weather aspect, when Laguna meets Raine, Squall occurs. and then, that's how they develops the story of the entire game. To make the concept works, they need a story about time issues to link the events between Laguna and Squall, and all of the side character like Ellone, Edea, and Rinoa is act like a key to link these two times and also to solves the issue. Everything is started with their planned to make two separated event between Laguna and Squall as the main idea of the game. The idea of this story developments has been explained by Kazushige Nojima. Even if they never reveal it in the game about squall-laguna-raine relationship, based on the idea of character creation between Laguna and Squall, the etymology and the concept of the game story, it's 100 % that squall is Laguna and Raine's son. Some argue that the name of Leonhart was taken from the family name of Raine since Laguna left her in the village to save Ellone while he didn't know that Raine is pregnant. The word of Leonheart is also decribes Raine's personality as a strong-willed and independent as he is living alone as a guardian for Ellone before he meets Laguna. and then Squall's been raised by Ellone. First, Laguna leaves again to explore the world and leaves Ellone and Squall with. Since kids, Squall only has Ellone as he calls her as Sis Ellone. And then Ellone also left after Edea being possessed by Ultimecia. Ellone leaves to seek protection to Cid (Edea's husband). And that's how we find Squall being trained in Balamb Garden under Cid's Supervision. All of Squall team mates is also orphane in Edea's house, and all of them also being raised in Garden by Cid after Edea being possessed by Ultimecia. I bet, Laguna lives with Squall and Ellone after he saves Ellone. And may be at this time Raine is already dead. Otherwise, he wouldn't live in an orphanage. but the occupation of GF in his memory makes squall doesn't remember that Laguna is his father. He even doesn't remember who was Ellone and also all of his friend from Edea's House.

@@87abig nope, I'm not genius, I only used to be a geek, and I love reading so many articles about final fantasy (both canon and speculation). some info I got from several articles (like the trivia, terminology of character's name, the behind story in creating this series, about the creator's insight, it came from so many article which I used to read during 2010-2013). this much understanding was a fruit (or you can say a mix) from so many reading. I haven't read an article telling about those concept I wrote in my comment up there. So it's not a copy paste, but I can't say it's 100 % my idea. It's an idea coming from so many references. So from that much reads, It came to me this much understanding, but ofc I can't memorize all of the detail to write that comment up there (which I made last years). I actually revisit those sites back to add more detail to support my comment. But the idea and understanding that I share in my comment up there was already inside my head and there was an urge to share it here. So many people rate this FFVIII lowly, but story wise, this one is masterpiece, complicated, so many twist and a mix of so many detail and background. story wise and about the details, I put this FFVIII in a par with Eichiro Oda's One Piece (only my personal opinion)
