Enjoying a mumu, a traditional meal in Papua New Guinea

A mumu is a traditional way of preparing a meal for a large group of people. The food is prepared in a hole in the ground, on top of heated stones. It can easily feed more than 100 people.

This was the way it was done as far back as I remember in the Ukarumpa/Aiyura Valley Gadsup tribes (1950s/60s) -- except they didn't have the plastic sheet or tarps back then. Everything was covered in banana leaves, which meant uncovering the food had to be done very carefully. Well-done video. Elsewhere, I've seen the people do it pretty much the same way, except for hollow bamboo tubes being inserted early on, so once the final dirt covering is on, water is poured directly down to the hot stones to create the steam that does the cooking. Delicious!
