You can purchase some relatively inexpensive testers that may end up saving you money in the long run. I bought a code checker and it really helps. It reads the code and I can clear it as well. It helped me diagnose a mass air flow sensor failure on my Kia. I currently have a P0306 due to a misfire on my ‘05 4Runner. I am going to test the coil first and take it from there. Hopefully that’s all it is! Great video. Thank you.

Hello nice video, one question how do you know in what power you need to turn on the spark plug tester?
@renejacques8288 Жыл бұрын
I used a spark plug tester( it has a tube just like your tester with no adjustable distance) on my '95 maxima, the spark was yellow, and a channel on youtube said a yellow spark considered weak is an old wives tale. I'm a bit confused. Can timing cause a weak spark? Thanks.
@EnjoyWheels_En Жыл бұрын
I don't think timing can cause weak spark, but misfire yes.

@@EnjoyWheels_En OK. The spark appears to be intermittent by about a half second to a second where I don't see anything then it reappears; any advice? Can the ignition condenser cause a misfire? Thanks a lot for replying.

You don't use copper slip anymore. It affects the torque when fitting the spark plug. They are now zink coated.
@tommurphy4307Ай бұрын
its called anti-seize and any at all is better than using nothing- so torque it a little less when using copper anti-seize. problem solved.

Correction: The ground connection is not made by the screw in the engine that holds the coil in place. The ground wire is actually in the connector of the coil and it’s part of the control circuit. The computer controls the ignition coil by means of the ground wire.

good catch- if you look closely at the bushing, you can see there is insulating material around that bushing, too.

I put in new park plugs and coil, all top of the line, in my 2010 Kia Sedona, and that engine started and worked like a champ for 50 miles before engine started rattling and I ended up with P0303 or P0330, meaning misfiring in Cyl 3. In Kia Sedona it is a pain to remove the intake manifold to get to cylinder 1, 3, and 5, but did it and 3 power was attached and no different than others. What should I do next? How can I test whether power is getting to the coil?

At the beggining of the video you said that a low battery voltage can cause the issue. I have a Mazda 6-2.0 petrol engine and i have a Cylinder 4 missfire.I changed the spark plug, ignition coils, O2 sensor, injectors, and still have the error.I checked the voltage of battery, and it has 12,59-12,80V.Do you think i have a bad alternator and that cause my cylinder 4 to missfire?
@tommurphy4307Ай бұрын
it should be 13.5V or higher at idle.

My experience, I plug of 1 coil while the wngine running, if vibratioan more than before it means the coil is good, note don't plug of too high (1cm -1, 5cm is good to go)
@BeADad24478 ай бұрын
If your car doesn't have a pencil coil like the one in this car, you can pull the spark plug wire from the coil or the spark plug while the engine is running and observe the spark.(if you are sensitive to getting a little shock use pliers. (The spark doesn't really hurt) before starting the car you can pull the wire and install it back(just to make sure you can pull the boot from the spark plug or coil) on older vehicles you will have a distributor cap and all the wires are connected there. Good luck.

@jimmysmall330 You're trying to work on your own vehicle (to save money on an actual mechanic, I presume), and you're crying about the need for two really cheap tools to do the job? Are you daft? You're complaining about the cost of a couple really cheap tools? A multimeter and an ignition coil tester? You could pick both up at harbor freight for $10. If that's too much for you to afford, you might want to get off your bussy and get a job. Or just learn to walk everywhere you go, because life's not gonna get any easier or cheaper than $10 worth of tools and an afternoon using them.

nice video for the coils but you are wrong the coil is not ground by the bolt which holds it to the valve cover. on the coil there are two connectors, one for voltage and one for grund. The proof is that to test it with a multimeter to check the primary circuit you must connect to the two branches of the coils and for the secondary circuit you must connect to the connector of the coil which receives the voltage and the other wire of the tester connected on the spring which connects to the spark plug. The real problem with Ford coils of this type is that the worst idiot would surely have done better. In 55 years of mechanics I had never seen such a stupid thing. The spring that connects to the spark plug is a very poor conductor. At the exit of the coil to connect the spring it is simply a flat terminal so the spring only touches the connector through the thin sides of the terminal. To the spark plug which tells us that the spring is really completely embedded on the spark plug terminal??? On my F 150 to no longer have to change coils I made a plate where the coils are now held in place. I removed the springs that connect to the spark plug and installed good spark plug wires. At the other end I installed very good NGK spark plug caps which hold really very securely to the spark plug. All you had to do was extend the wires of the coil connectors and that's it. I've never had to replace coils. Thus positioned, the coils no longer suffer from the heat of the engine. Heat is the worst enemy of coils on all engines.
