I have not been a good model for fruit preservation. Life and work gets busy and with fruit if you miss the window on harvesting and preserving, you can easily lose the whole harvest since a lot of these fruits come at once and do not hang long after ripening. There is a lot of pressure from birds as well so if I don't go out and bag fruit, the wildlife eats it. I do freeze and pressure can when I can. I did get to the apricots in time and made some awesome jam that will keep me in supply for a year.

Thank you for the video, I see the plants have grown quite a bit since last year's video; more shade for your yard/plants. The fallen leaves have really started to add up, giving that desert soil more nutrients.

I have a 3 year old tropical blue timber bamboo in 9b and it’s struggled to get big. It’s grown a lot since planting but is so far behind the Seabreeze bamboo I planted at the same time. It’s disheartening because we were told by the bamboo farm it would do well in full sun and it struggles. I have to water it everyday in the summer if it’s not raining or it gets bad.
@EnlightenmentGarden
@EnlightenmentGarden Жыл бұрын
Bambusa chungii? I did not plant that one because it's more of an open clumper and I prefer a dense tight form. I have the miniature version or Barbelletta growing in partial shade only because I had heard the best reports when in that environment but it is growing slowly and does need constantly moist soil. There is a dolichomerithalla blue that was recently released by Tropical Bamboo Nursery in Loxahatchee that may grow faster if it's anything like my Silverstripe bamboo but it's quite expensive--$100 for a 3-gallon.

Thanks for your video. Very educational. You mentioned the lows in temperatures in your area, but I’d like to know the highs. You said they get a lot of sun & that’s what’s causing me reservations. Where I am at, in El Paso, Texas, we Can get up to 105 deg for a couple of weeks & our lows are in the mid 20’s as well, w a couple of days in the teens. Im thinking the sea breeze might be my best bet as I also want to block out my neighbor.
@EnlightenmentGarden
@EnlightenmentGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Our highs can get up to 120+ and it's not uncommon for us to get lots of days above 110 in Summer. Seabreeze is good down to 20. Anything lower is a risk even if only a few days. You may want to look into Bambusa dissimilis, Bambusa dissimulator and Bambusa textilis gracilis. Similar but a little more cold hardy.

I purchased a Bambusa from Tropical Bamboo Nursery and it was the scrawniest, roughest looking plant I've received by mail. I love their selection and don't want to be too hard on them but I was disappointed in this particular specimen and its condition upon arrival.

@EnlightenmentGarden
@EnlightenmentGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'd say it was about a 3' or 4' distance from the path knowing the mature footprint is about 6' on this variety. Here is a video of what they originally looked like near planting time if interested. It's a completely different space now! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYXMqGuopbJ1pJI

Have you had any issues with your Alphonse Kaars? I have 4 varieties of Bambusa species not far outside Phoenix metro in Zone 9a and all have been doing fine except the Alphonse Kaar in which I have a handful of them all doing poorly. I've been considering removing them because they still look terrible into their second growing season. They grow fine and send up plenty of shoots, but the leaf color always becomes white or yellow. The only issue I've had with Oldhamii is a spider mite infestation during June when it was hot and dry. I was able to kill them after 3 applications of Forbid, but I sure hope they don't come back subsequent years as after this summer they will be much too large for me to spray. Have you seen any spider mite damage during hot dry months? The spider mites spread really fast and I'm lucky I pay close attention to my plants and caught it when I did.
@EnlightenmentGarden
@EnlightenmentGarden 3 жыл бұрын
For me, Alphonse Karr has improved with time and the rains we had this year. In hot dry months canes have shown signs of black sooty mold caused by aphids which is common in the multiplex family. It's a very slow grower and will not get much height. The coloring you describe sounds like solar bleach. Mine are now in partial shade so that's probably helped them out to keep the leaves green. It's definitely not my favorite variety. I've not had issues with mites so far. Another option to spraying may be predatory mites (Neoseiulus/Amblyseius californicus Mite Predator)

It looks like Tractor Supply still carries the product, "Petmate Superior Construction Chicken Coop". It now costs 600. I believe I paid half that 4 years ago but prices have gone up on nearly everything. It comes unfinished; I painted it in white trim and a green-blue base color full-gloss.

Local nursery has some nice-looking B. oldhamii in 10g ($100) and 20g ($200) pots. All things being equal, do you think that two 10g will have better production in a few years than a single 20g?

How long does it have to be established before you could air layer and propagate it? E.G. If i wanted to make a wall of seabreeze, would I have to buy a bunch of plants and put them all in at the same time?
@EnlightenmentGarden
@EnlightenmentGarden 3 жыл бұрын
3 gallon seabreeze planted 6' apart should give you a full hedge in 3 years. Bamboo takes about a year to establish so after that point you could start propagating but air layering is not all that common. Most people have success rooting branches/culms or taking root divisions.

Graceful is said to be lower shedding than others but would recommend installing some kind of landscape edger around it to contain the litter so it does not all go into your pool.
