I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 24 years of service. There are major differences with responsibilities and accountability between officer and enlisted. Officer duties are highly stressful especially at the higher pay grades of O3 and above. It’s also more admin, management, and leadership than technical skills. Officer selection is also highly competitive with an up or out policy that isn’t in the enlisted ranks. If you don’t make officer promotions at the proper time you must leave the service and anyone who makes it past O4 is in the top 20 percent of their peers. Yes, go officer if you can handle the responsibility and also have the academics required. To get into the field grade ranks you better have a masters degree. I think your web site is great. My dad gave me all your info back in the pre computer age. I remember my starting pay as a 2Lt was $500 a month in 1977. Inflation is crazy.
@DivePlane133 жыл бұрын
I think you just made my decision on officer or enlisted.. it looks like it's easier to stay in for 20 as enlisted. As for staying in as an officer that competitiveness is insane and since theres no guarantee for being able to stay in and retire then why bother?
@xavier011103 жыл бұрын
@@DivePlane13 yeah being an officer is incredibly stressful because of the pressure. My father was lieutenant colonel in the household cavalry and hated the amount of pressure, so I'm gonna enlist and work my way up to warrant officer class 1, which is the highest nco rank in the British army.

In the Airforce you had high year tenure ( up or out) for e4 and up as you did for 03 and up. I was prior enlisted and both had its good, bad, and ugly. As for accountability I saw many an officer blame enlisted to get out of thier own shortcomings or lack of leadership skills or capability. For responsibilities, senior enlisted in the Airforce had plenty. Mad respect for them. Nothing is more funny than a 2lt trying to play rank with a chief . That was one pearl of wisdom I tried to impart to my off the street peers in OTS. don't eff with nco's.

I remember when I was a E3 and was At my first duty station. All of us enlisted in the barracks were upset because of how we were treated by the officers. We did not understand why they could not hang out with us at all. Also why they made way more money. One weekend my XO was working in his office in our barracks. I asked him why he was working late and on a day off. My xo told me he works another 2-4 hours a night to do paperwork and make plans for the next day etc. Also the fact he was in charge of more people and his responsibility made sense at that point. Before that day I always saw officers go to bed in the field way before us enlisted. I never saw an officer stay late or do anything to show sacrifice. I used to thing they put their pants on the same way. Lol

5:58 also it's not just that a 23 year old 2LT has loans, but that same officer may be the same age as a 23 enlistee or even 30-year old E-4. Now when I was in Basic, there were a handful of 22-28 year olds with us who would be entering the Army as an E-1/2/3/4. Its not just the college loan amount, bus also the *effort* of college, that being putting yourself 3-5 years out of the workforce loop to gain life and education experience, that results in being rewarded with higher pay.

Find a mentor that will guide and direct you in your career (enlisted/officer); and just follow the system; if you fail, try again. All the best to all present/future service members! All is well!

A big reason there is the E vs O pay gap is it is remnant of the days when Officers came from American aristocratic elite in an era when citizens were given positions of power through economic classes and stature. USMAs congressional recommendation letters stemmed from a time when it was “who you rubbed elbows with” rather than academic recommendations. Sandhurst in the UK did away with that platform, now British Enlisted can commission without a degree and is based off of recommendation and merit from their commanders. Once they get recommended they integrate the Officer pipeline and the pay is more neutrally focused.

This is IMPORTANT for those that wish to enlist and then become an officer later. Under Title 10 law, the Army sections 3911 and 3926 lay out the requirements of a retirement with at least 20 good years (meaning combined calculated service, active and reserve), at least 10 years of which have been service as a commissioned officer. What this means is you CANNOT retire with LESS THAN 10 YEARS as an officer while serving in the military. There is no such thing as "4-6 years provision", as you won't make the cut off and then will have to go beyond 20 years to make up the offset, which can be dangerous during a period of downsizing. Otherwise what happens is a service member reverts to highest obtained enlisted rank for purposes of retirement, which can be devastating for a military pension. You want to make the switch AT MOST between 8-10 active years to remain competitive. There also is an age limit, which varies dependent on the needs of the US Army, which "skunks" certain NCOs (usually E-7s) from switching at all. There was a limited time that the Secretary of Defense allowed a waiver to eight years commissioned service, but this EXPIRED in FY2018 during the drawdown. A minimum of 3 years in grade is required for a FULL pay average retirement pension, and a minimum of 6 acceptable months in grade to retire at that rank. Ultimately, the prior enlisted officer can sometimes be at disadvantage later in comparison to a younger officer mostly due to injury potential, age, and promotion selection if they wait too long to change over.

I mean, officers are not paid enough in some cases. One example is Computer Science. Any computer professional starts making 200k these days, and experienced ones half a million at places like Netflix. So the military has to find a way to keep them happy. Whether that is making them feel like they are listened to, or simply giving them a lot of freedom with decent pay. After all, they could be making bank in the civilian world and decided for the military. THAT is the main reason they make more. And to be honest, it should be higher.

I didn't want to go the officer route. He seemed more stressed being an officer. I really enjoyed being an NCO. I trained many a good man and woman as my time as a 91A. Not sure if this is true today but apparently in the past officers in the British army were paid very little and needed to be independently wealthy with a private income,this helped the 'upper class' hold the reins of the military and the lack of income discouraged the lower classes(with all the expense involved)from seeking 'officer status' thus minimising the possibility of any insurrection or revolution in the country,if anyone can enlighten me on this, feel free.

You can't do 15 years enlisted and then 'switch' over for 4 or 5 years and retire and then get officer retirement. You need to have the majority of service in the officer side to get that pay and a minimum of 3 years in that rank to get that ranks pay. So if you make o4 at 20 years and retire you will get o3 pay. If you make o4 at 20 and then retire at 23 years you will get that o4 retirement.

What kind of reasoning even is that? Yes you want to do PT, within your bodies limits of course.

First of all officers do not make “bank”, yea compared to enlisted they make a little more BUT if you compare them to civilians they make much less.

Compare salary of a soldier plus health insurance, housing allowance, and food allowance and you will see they make decent money

I ship to BCT on the first of July to Jackson, then to Lee for AIT (91B) up until sometime in December I believe, if I don't take or get approved for leave during the holidays what can I expect to do during that time when others are on leave?

So i watched one of your previous videos and basically you said that if you are offered a job you don’t want... don’t accept it. Well... i’m not gonna lie. I’m not smart enough for the field i’m tryna get into. (Increased my ASVAB score by 22 points in 5 days ‘via the PICAT’) I’ve been studying my ass off. My recruiter basically just said to me though that if they take me up to MEPS & i don’t see the job i want... they are still expecting me to sign because it costs about $8,000 of tax payers money JUST for me to go up there. Which i believe, but damn. That’s kind of messed up if you ask me. Tryna blackmail me into do sum i ain’t tryna do 😭😂 Do you think i should continue through and go to MEPS or say no? (I’m talking with the Navy rn, but honestly more than likely gonna do Army cause i have more experience with Army JROTC etc)
@sergeantthomas32955 жыл бұрын
If your score is as low as it sounds you wont be able to Join the Navy any way, if you already made the decision to join the Army focus on getting your foot in the door go to MEPS and choose a job that you can use on the outside once you are in you can raise your GT score and there is a possibility that you can change your MOS, if not use the Army as a stepping stone take the training and the benefits the Army is going to give you select a contract with the least amount of time and get out and put it all to use
@t-jizzyproductions5 жыл бұрын
Sergeant Thomas My very first time taking the ASVAB i scored a 26. I was a sophomore in high school & not gonna lie partially BS’d it. Lol! But i took the PICAT & got a 45. I REALLY like that idea though. No matter what i do, i do know my reason for going in is i’d like to serve my country, but as of rn i believe taking the minimum contract may be for the best. Idk how to tell my Navy recruiter i’m gonna go talk to an Army guy though without them looking at me like “wtf?” Cause i gave them most my paper work 🤦🏾♂️😂

@@t-jizzyproductions if your reason for Joining is to serve your country dont let not getting a specific job stop you alot of people can't even get as far as you have in the process, getting your foot in the door should be the focus dont let the bonus distract you eirher( if there is one) take the least amount of time, money you can get back but time you cant if you dont like it youll be able to do your time and get out sooner than later if you do like it you can reenlist, The Navy recruiter is not going to care as much as you think unless things have changed his focus is putting in people who have a 50 or above so while he is committed to you, you're truly not top priority, besides at the end of the day it's your life you gotta do what's best for you oh and another thing you talking about choosing jobs, you cant choose your job in the navy in the same sense as in the Army

Sergeant Thomas I got yah. I’m kind of hoping it doesn’t give me a bad rep in all the recruiters eyes in my city. & yeah i was never really too into it for the money. Lol! I’m pretty fascinated by the thought of them teaching me life skills, discipline, & to appreciate all around the benefits we have everyday & don’t take as much appreciation for. I’d like to see all the opportunities i have in life and know how to make the decisions best for me with a leveled head. I feel like they can teach me that. I can go on all day about my dreams & goals, so i’d really just like to say this... i am extremely grateful for your help. It helped more than you know. & thank you for you service

Do you have different mess hall for officer's and enlisted In us military also????
@angiepatterson63383 жыл бұрын
You should never join on either side for the money. Neither side makes anything near what their civilian counterparts make. If you’re out at sea and can’t make your money last then there’s something wrong with you.
@grapeshot232 жыл бұрын
Bad advice, you have to do 10 years active federal commissioned service to retire with officer pay. Anything less than that and your pay will revert your high 3 before you commissioned.
@austinblack1805 жыл бұрын
The 3-4 year timespan for E-5 is not always true. You should have mentioned that you have to meet really high cutoff scores for some MOS.
@MattWard895 жыл бұрын
Yeah but on avg you should definitely get it in that timeframe. I’ve also talked previously on how MOS’ determines how easy or hard it is to get promoted in the nco ranks
@JakeBroe5 жыл бұрын
For enlisted (like an E-7) that switch over to be an officer, they have to do 10 years to retire as an officer. Otherwise their pension and retirement package reverts to their E-7 time.

I’m so confused. How long is BCT? Is it one week of reception AND ten weeks of BCT? Or is it one week of reception and nine weeks of BCT? I’ve heard it both ways many times and I am confused about it. Can someone answer please?

What he is talking about is just crazy they platoon can run without an officer there's a lot of ncos that could lead a platoon better than a lot of officers especially second lieutenants and there's staff sergeant who have families they got college debts just like a second lieutenant
