Jaron Ennis makes short work of Custio Clayton, stopping him via impressive knockout in Round 2 of their IBF Welterweight Title Eliminator.
In what was supposed to be the toughest test of his career, Jaron “Boots” Ennis again made a mockery of pre-fight expectations, stopping the previously undefeated Custio Clayton via a second-round stoppage in an IBF welterweight title eliminator in the telecast co-feature in another scintillating performance from the Philly fighter.
After pushing Clayton back with jabs, Ennis, 24, landed a sweeping right hand to the top of Clayton’s head behind his ear that caused the Canadian to crumple to the canvas. Clayton, a former Olympian known for his durability, tried to get up but was still dizzy from the punch and fell back down again. He finally managed to get to his feet and beat the count, but stumbled into the ropes, causing referee Ray Corona to mercifully wave the fight off at 2:49 of the second round.
Following the match, Ennis called out unified champion Errol Spence Jr., who was ringside. Ennis improved to 29-0 with 27 knockouts while Clayton suffered his first defeat, dropping to 19-1-1 with 12 knockouts.
“Anybody can get it right now,” Ennis said. “But I’m the IBF No. 1 contender and I think ‘Mr. Big Fish’ is here himself, so it’s time to go fishing,” he said referencing Spence’s nickname.
Spence responded, smiling as he commented on another dominant and electric performance from Ennis and another unsuccessful showing from an Ennis opponent.
“He’s doing what he’s supposed to do,” Spence told Jim Gray of SHOWTIME. “He’s supposed to call me and everybody out and say I want to fight them. If he wasn’t hungry like that, like the guy he just fought. I don’t feel like he was hungry. I don’t feel like he wanted to fight.
“Ennis can fight,” Spence went on. “I’m very high on him. He’s got the right attitude. He’s got the right team behind him with him and his dad. He’s going to go a long way. But I heard him say he wants to reel me in. You might catch something you don’t want so don’t try too hard trying to reel me in.”
Ennis, who previously stopped veteran contender Thomas Dulorme in the first round back in October, took control from the opening bell, unleashing a steady diet of jabs to Clayton’s face and body. With Clayton moving backward for the entire round, unable to respond, frozen by Ennis’ speed, the 24-year-old began to open up with rights and lefts while switching from righty to lefty as Clayton covered up.
“He had a high guard, so I was trying to come around with the right hook,” Ennis said. “He leaned down and I just threw an overhand. I thought he was going to get up. He’s a durable, tough guy. Nobody has ever stopped him. I thought he was going to get up, but I saw he fell again, so I was like, ‘this is over.’”

@nat turner No disrespect, but Boots is bigger, stronger, and more physically gifted than Bud. Bud would probably concede that. Bud has one heck of a boxing brain, and that we have to see from Boots. Someone has to be good enough to make him have to show his IQ. Lipinets is not a bum at all, but the reason he’s fighting bums is that nobody really wants that smoke lol. There is a difference between cherry picking and being ducked. Lol. That man looks like a middleweight at 147. That fast, that much pop. Nobody signing up for that of their own free will.

Think it actually landed behind the ear which is generally given a pass. Also becomes very much a gray area when the fighter getting hit turns the back of their head into the punch, rabbit punching is illegal but boxers are always told to protect themselves at all times for a reason. Ennis threw a perfectly legal punch, but it became dangerously close to a rabbit punch because Clayton saw it coming and tried to dodge it in what turned out to be an inadvisable motion giving up the back of his head.

@@remyogun8270 I find it amusing you wanna make assumptions about what you think I know, just because I have someone like Boots being the only WW, in my eyes, who has the skill set and attributes to beat either Spence or Crawford. You also don't seem to understand the scoring criteria is much different as an Olympian compared to being a pro as well, and I know exactly what I'm talking about. Besides, not every talent has a chance of being an Olympian, as many fighters get skipped over, despite having great amateur backgrounds, which is also something you can't seem to grasp. Boots has been at this sport, since he was fucking 2-years-old, comes from a family of fighters, and was born and bred for this. He's the best thing out of the Philly area since B-Hop. Ive been following this sport longer than you have.

Boots read him from the beginning. Realized Clayton kept going to a duck (bend at waist) Vs backhand following the double jab out of orthodox. Once Ennis noticed this he went to southpaw to save it for later and avoid being predictable to Clayton’s and his corner. Ennis comes out round 2 in southpaw, then goes back to orthodox shortly to try to right overhand following a double jab, expecting a Clayton double block (high guard) to duck and was correct. Ennis is a boxing mastermind.

Marlon: Respectfully, let's pump the brakes a little bit. Broner, Floyd, and Crawford? Having great talent is a whole lot different than being a great fighter and Ennis is not there just yet. Most of the time, a fighter needs great competition to be a great fighter and Boots really hasn't had great opposition yet. Now let's see how he does against a Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman, or Ugas before we start comparing Boots to some of the all-time greats! Very skilled fighter though.

It's gonna be real fun seeing how will any of the top guys combat this style of fighting. He is deadly from both stances, and even more impressively - calculated from both stances with a great jab. And he has an above decent power. That shit looks illegal. It would take a truly special competitor to beat Ennis. The likes of Bud and Spence probably, but the future is definitely Boots.

Nah, I disagree. He caught him with an equilibrium shot. If you’ve ever been hit there you know you lose your balance and legs for a sec. Around he ear area is a tough place to get hit. This was Clayton’s big shot to become a player he didn’t want to get stopped this early.

Not close to a rabbit punch - big overhand right, and Clayton moved his head down and forward. Caught him above and behind the ear - unfortunate for Clayton, as he probably needed another 5-7 seconds to shake that out, but it was a clean punch.
