I had a quick question and thought you'd be the best to ask! I wanted to get some branches from the dogwood trees outside my house but I'm not sure how to make them safe for little critters in my home I've read that you can pour boiling water on them and let them dry out for several months, freeze them for a few days, or bake them in an oven I wasn't sure which was the best option and thought you could assist since you have so many branches in with your mice!
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
Dogwood can be poisonous. Aspen and willow is much safer. For large pieces without leaves, I freeze to sterilize, to be extra safe, I sometimes bake. For smaller branches with leaves, I pick them in places that wild rodents are unlikely to get to and then take a chance. Mice love these fresh branches so much, it is worth the small risk. Dried leaves I pick directly from the tree, not from the ground, and freeze. I also give my mice dandelion leaves and grasses I pick from outside. By giving my mice natural enrichments, I accept that there will be a small risk of parasites. But with kitten Revolution, these are easily managed, should an infection break out. If I see any excessive itching in my mice, I treat them with a tiny drop of Revolution between the shoulder blades each, twice two weeks apart. This solves the problem. I only have to treat once every year or two, in general my mice stay healthy and happy.

One of my pet mice injured themselves one night in their home, nad may possibly have a concussion or something. Cause I noticed they had a the tiniest but of dried blood from his nose, but I cleaned it up. He's acting a little lethargic and I can't get him to drink water from his feeder. Any suggestions on how I may get him to drink his water? Should i try a tiny syringe or something? I don't know
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
All you can do is keep him quiet and warm and have food and water easily accessible in jam jar lids and then hope for the best. Sorry for the late reply, I had no internet over the weekend.

@@CreekValleyCritters Oh that's okay, turned out, he had hit his head from a fall in his home one day, and he had brain damage. Hi! I love your videos! I have a question, I’d greatly appreciate your thoughts. I recently found field mice in my greenhouse. Momma and 3 “grown” babies. I caught and released them, and I placed a few traps in my crawlspace just in case (last week), I caught one that looked like an adult, and two young ones. The following day, I caught a larger mouse, which I figured was the father. After that, I kept finding smaller mice daily, which I figured were the “children” ( not quite babies). I suspect that they came in when I had a generator installed in mid-December. So, I patched the little holes. I haven’t caught any more adult ones. However, I have been catching 1-2 daily since, and two of them were much, much smaller than the others. Do you think, I’m going through 2-3 generations, and eventually they will be all gone? I set up a cozy place with soft paper and food for one of the babies, but he/she looked so stressed. So, I eventually had to release it (near rocks, trees and leaves for hiding places). So now, I’ve been putting some food inside the trap so that they can eat before being released. Thank you very much.
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
Make sure you release them at least 2 miles from home, mice have excellent homing instincts and you don't want them coming back. Sealing your house is an excellent idea. If you are still catching mice, then there either is still entry for them from outside, you had a huge infestation or they are still breeding in your house. Making sure there is no food for them, catching them and sealing your home should with time deal with the problem. The only other option is getting a pet cat.

Do you know much about wild mice? My cat brought home a young wild mouse. She seems to have developed a skin infection. Her back leg looks red and some of the hair is gone. She seemed ok at first when I took her away from the cat. But about 3 weeks I noticed her running on her front feet and that’s when I notice the either skin condition or maybe it’s a infection. I have not handled her since she is wild. I live in the USA and I don’t know if she is a field mouse which I could pick up and handle or there is another another breed that lives here and I should worry about getting a infection from her.
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
Most likely an infection, cat bites tend to do that. It is a bit risky to care for wild mice, but you seem to be taking precautions. The most dangerous illness they can pass on to humans is Hantavirus, but only deer mice carry this and only a small percentage of these are carriers, mostly adult males since in is passed from mouse to mouse via biting. A lot of people keep deer mice as pets and are fine, but it is always a bit of a risk, less so if you got your mouse as a baby.

Hi, CreekValleyCritters. Have you ever experienced a mouse with a tumor? If so, did you decide to let a vet perform surgery or did you choose to use pain medication for the mouse? My brindle girl, Cinnamon, has a tumor and she's only 7 months old. I was wondering if you could give me any advice.
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the tumor and the mouse. If the tumor is loose under the skin, it will be very easy to remove, so surgery is definitely an option. If the tumor is not loose, but still small and in an easily operable place, then surgery is an option. If though the tumor is large, solid, in an awkward spot, the mouse is showing other signs of illness and/or there is more than one, then it is best to let things be. I usually just spoil them until they start showing signs of distress. Then it is time to have them humanely euthanized. With surgery you have to keep in mind that often the tumor can grow back. I have had tumor removal surgery done on three mice. With two it bought the mice an extra month of life, with one, Amara, it bought her an extra six months. Once the second tumor comes in, surgery really is no point anymore.

Hello, I have a question about mice. I currently have an elderly gerbil pair in a 40 gallon breeder tank. When they pass, I was looking into getting Mice. What do you recommend for food and bedding? My hamsters/ gerbils (separate cages) get Mazuri rat and Mouse mixed with Higgin Sunburst, and Oxbow
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
Uber paper based bedding is the best out there for mice, very non dusty with no chemical odor. A block diet from a good quality brand should be the main food plus a good quality seed mix, greens, meal worms, and healthy human foods as a supplement and enrichment. The best training food is baby food cheddar flavored corn crisps. Mice just LOVE these and you can tame almost any mouse. Once training is complete, only feed in moderation, it can make them fat. I give each one of my mice one cheezie every evening and they really look forward to it :)

Hi I was wondering if you help me a little bit I got 2 female mice from the pet shop a month ago not expecting baby’s and a week later I find 3 pups sleeping next to mum . I never did research on how to look after the baby’s because I didn’t expect to get them can you tell me at what age shall I remove them from mum and start handling them? I don’t trust google id rather come to someone who has experience
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
Mom will know how to care for them, all you have to do is give her good care and keep an eye on things. If she is easy going and trusts you, you can start handling the babies on the first day. Be quiet and gentle, don't handle them for very long and only once or twice a day. You can handle them more as they get older. If mom is very skittish and fearful, wait a few days before you handle the babies. Keep track of their age, once they are four weeks old, you need to separate the boys from the girls. The girls can stay with mom, the boys can be together but if there is any fighting, each boy will need his own cage. You can tell the boys from the girls starting from when they are three or four days old, I have a video on this if you look back a bit.
