As a biology undergrad, it probably has to do with DNA through molecular analysis. (Like Dogs sharing DNA 90% with Wolves while crocodiles and alligators probably share like 60%) the example I used here isn't real btw, just making up percentages for scale. There are also parts of genes called introns and exons that control how DNA is expressed, such as size, fur color and other traits. Dogs and wolves may share like 90% DNA (not sure), but only the exons (genes that are expressed) are different. Fun fact: Did you know that the crocodile and birds like the swan are more closely related than crocodiles and komodo dragon?

I've never understood why people find it so difficult to just breed them with a healthier breed of dog, even a single generation of crossbred pug is significantly healthier. Is a dog being "cute" really that much more important than a dog being able to exist in relative comfort. My country (The Netherlands) has made it illegal to breed brachycephalic dogs.
@jessicagislason485527 күн бұрын
They don't need to outbreak pugs and brachial all have pretty wide gene pools, they can just stop selecting for poor traits which is how one makes a breed anyway, they created the old English Bulldog for example relatively quickly and its literally a more robust healthier version of the English bulldog, this isn't even a hard issues to fix, people just need to stop backyard breeding and talk to national breed clubs on preferred standards tbh

I support that, but this “breed” will certainly take longest time to be created since completely differently from the common method(looking just in the physical appearance) which take around a year to fully develop. In this case we are looking to the physiological appearance or simply health, which to analyze we need to take whole lifetime to take in consideration and try to pass who reach the oldest age, and since the “best” window to reproduce is young to middle aged(2-4 years old) it would be basically shot a target in total darkness. I am not an expert at this topic but I think the best solution is look at the never domesticated ones or the 100% Natural dog breed(aka grey Wolf) and try adopt physiological traits that they have to the ones we have.

The same thing is happening to cats (although in smaller numbers). Cat fanciers have created breeds with similarly maladaptive traits, such as extremely flat faces with high noses, dwarfism (to get short “Munchkin” legs), and deformed or missing whiskers. To create twisty cats (or “squittens”), a breeder _actively selected_ for a genetic deformity that causes the cat’s front leg bones not to develop properly. In extreme cases, the twisty cat has useless, flipper-like front paws that seem to be attached at the shoulder. Cats are valued for their independent nature; it’s particularly sad to see breeders selecting for traits that make them dependent on humans.

As a cat lover, my heart always sinks while watching Munchkin cats jumping, trying to catch a toy or climb up cat trees, fail and terribly squash their faces on the ground. The folded ears of Scottish Fold cats are the result of a cartilage abnormality which causes deformities throughout the body and a progressive crippling arthritis. In cats with only one copy of the gene, the arthritis develops slowly, but in some cases becomes serious by 6 months of age. In cats with 2 copies of the gene (about 1 in 4 kittens born), it develops much faster. This is besides the deformities.

The sad thing is that, for the most part, selective breeding began with the aim of encouraging certain traits that helped dogs do specific jobs. Things like herding or guarding instinct, fondness for water, desire to retrieve etc, all well and good since these things didn't harm the dogs. In fact certain traits, like increased stamina and intelligence in some breeds, were probably a positive. Problems only seem to occur when humans start selecting for appearance alone, the dreaded "Cute" factor. Humans are programmed to find infantile features appealing, a useful adaptation that encourages us to care for our extremely helpless young. Unfortunately we carry that over to our liking for such features in other species, large eyes, snub noses, short limbs, rounded heads etc. All that is seriously bad news for a species that started out with long snouts and bodies built for distance running. So here we are, creating deformed, baby like, anxious, unhealthy and suffering creatures and we do it because we find it endearing.
@LuisAldamiz26 күн бұрын
Yeah, most utility dogs, especially the "fundamental breeds" such as shepherd dogs and guard dogs (mastiffs) are mostly fine, hounds already have weird things going on and speed-specialist dogs like greyhounds are quite weird if you ask me, but they were never as exaggerated as pitbulls, let alone pug-like "pet/toy" breeds.

@captkate-yz8kd22 күн бұрын
Even dogs bred for entertainment were ruined before the "cuteness" thing... I can't blame a pitbull; it has no morals as an animal. But it's not a safe selection of dogs to get anymore. Because people bred an animal they watched die fighting one another. Now, with dog fighting banned, they're bred to be "designer dogs" that look tough with their frog-like legs and way too much bulk. The consequence is that we're left with dogs that lash out at families that raised them and are difficult to train. They're not safe to keep. When people breed "pets" for selfish desires without considering health, docile behavior, etc, things go wrong. Working dogs of the past were bred well because health mattered to their work. Aggressive dogs, unhealthy ones, and ones that couldn't work were not bred further. Now, people don't care if a dog can work. It's fine to have a non-working dog, but the dog still wants to run around and play. It doesn't deserve to be born gasping for air all its life. People have obese dogs laying around their houses and think it's cute. They try to anthropomorphize dogs and act as if humans are hurting the dog's feelings by trying to keep it healthy.

It should be illegal to deliberately breed animals with severe genetic disorders, which extremely short nose is. The same goes for satin guinea pigs or their mixes who carry genes causing osteodystrophia, which is a horrible disease which makes their bones "spongy" instead of solid, so they live in constant pain, can´t walk, can´t even lay down comfortably, can´t chew properly, so their teeth overgrow... They have to be put to sleep very young. I think 2 years of age is their max lifespan. Normal guinea pigs live for 5-8 years. There´s also a lot of awful conditions caused by genes for certain fur color or pattern in guinea pigs, rats and other rodents. The breeders keep saying they are responsible and don´t breed two individuals who carry the bad genes with each other, so it is not a problem. It IS a f-ing problem when they deliberately keep the genes in the population, then some kid buys a pair of animals who carry the recessive genes and their offspring is affected by the diseases. The breeders are the ones who deliberately keep these bad genes flow. Normies don´t even know these conditions exist because it is so absurd to expect the breeders to deliberatey spread awful disorders throught the population of animals they claim to love.

She asks me if I want to come over to see her new dog. So I ride my motorcycle over. I assumed it would be a regular dog. I walk in. Her dog was a Presa Canario, which looks like a Pit Bull except about three times as big. I think this dog weighed more than I did. I was like, “Holy shit! Why did get this dog?” She said her brother had some puppies and gave one to her. “This is a puppy?!” Fortunately, her dog really liked me, so whenever I came over to visit this dog would get excited and jump on me and knock me over and start giving me slobbery kisses. If this dog wasn’t heavier than me it was certainly stronger than me. Sometimes I used to walk her dog for poops. People would cross the street when they saw this dog. Dogs didn’t evolve directly from modern gray wolves! Instead, dogs and gray wolves share a common ancestor-an extinct, wolf-like species that split into two lineages around 20,000-40,000 years ago. Studies like one in Nature (2014) and another in Current Biology (2015) back this up.

Pug (co?) owner here. Wanted to share some thoughts. Great video, by the by. When my brother asked if a dog in the house is ok, we weren't expecting him to bring back a Pug (Consiering we are just an average middle class asian family). Back then, we didnt really know what a Pug is, or its multitude of problems. We started like any oblivious dog owner would. Days passed by, and we weren't doing a very good job at taking care of it. Dietary, Health and Well being complications are rife, and my brother had decided to get his shit together and really delve into keeping a Pug. We didn't know a Pug suffers in their every waking moment, and while they may not realize it, and sometimes frankly, nor do we, it continues to discover things with hope. We wanted to see him prosper. As we slowly learn how a Pug suffers, we all mutually developd a certain way we treat him. We rarely tied him on a leash or restricted him too much in public settings. We trained him to unleash his holy goodness at the appropriate places (to partial success), taught him dicipline so that we rarely have the need to leash him, and subtly, always refered to him with human pronouns. To us, he isn't a showpiece or a doll. We never really showed him off, and when someone approaches and adore him, we always chuckle in solemn uncertainy. We all wanted him to live the best dog life he could, not all dressed up, placed on a royal pillow and leashed, but naked, free, and rebellious. One of us. And rebellious he is. He's always spinning in circles and running and climbing. When we eat, he jumps to a chair and puts the upper halve of his body on the table, looking at us anxiously for food, and reluctantly, comply his beseechment. He would bite me if I take his food away because I forgot to add something in. And we wouldn't have it any other way. We now closely monitor his mental and physical health. Regular visits to the vet and the daycare, participating in events where he can socialize, and basic care like wiping his wrinkles and cleaning his ears. His health skyrocketed, though his obesity issues are still physically apparent, his muscles are strong and tough, and he didnt look half bad when he stands straight. Best thing yet, he snores way less these days. We would like to believe we are giving him the most dignified life we can. Other people frown upon us at how much freedom se give him, but never once did we change our ways. Yet, deep down, we understand that the longer he lives, the worse he is going to get. And likewise, all of us felt guilty of prolonging his suffering. In the end, he seems happy. Extremely so. Whenever we see him sitting at his favourite spots or beside us, we can see his face of contentment. While he never chose or may ever know why he is suffering, at the very least, he is as happy and dignified as he can be. He will never be just a dog to us, and we hope that whatever may cme, whenever it may be, we can forgive ourselves in his memory.
@derpro812524 күн бұрын
I think the dog "suffering" in every waking moment is a bit dramatic and humans anthropomorphizing the animal. The dog has been used to its conditions ever since birth, so what we may perceive as it suffering is probably different from its point of view, since that's its way of life. Dogs care about companionship, safety and attention, which is what you've given it, so I think there's no fault at all with you and your family giving the animal a home where its health issues are addressed and cared for. Frankly, I think in the eyes of other dogs of other breeds, the pug might actually be envied and put in a position of advantage from the extra attention it gets in general, due to its unconventional appearance and extra care it gets from its owners due to its natural needs.
@polyfloralhoney22 күн бұрын
@@derpro8125 what pugs go through can only be described as "suffering" since it fits the definition perfectly. Their "way of life" is suffering. It's more sad their normal state has to be this way. Also more attention doesn't make their life better. Pretty sure most humans with disabilities get more attention but most would trade that away to be normal. And what about the pugs that end up neglected?
@derpro812522 күн бұрын
@@polyfloralhoney I think you're assuming too much about what it means for a dog to live a happy life. By the fact that you're comparing it to the life of a human alone and the way we think about disabilities tells me that you need to re-examine how you understand dogs and what makes them tick.
@TehAnimationSparxx22 күн бұрын
@@derpro8125 doesn't matter if the dog is used to it tbh - if you had a list of genetic issues which affected your breathing, your walking etc 24/7, even if you had material comforts and companionship, i'd still consider you to be suffering to some extent, i guess the way we define it is in relation to a 'normal' life, but this is just semantics. I agree OP has no reason to feel bad as they're providing everything they can, but i think it's really strange to complain about anthropomorphising language in the context of a discussion between humans about a human-created problem.
@derpro812522 күн бұрын
@@TehAnimationSparxx It isn't unusual to anthromorphisize dogs, since many people are bonded to them closely and feel empathy towards them, but they really do not think the same way people do in relation to a lot of things. It being a health problem that is man-made doesn't mean that the dog feels the same way a human does about it. There are of course limits, based on the extremity of the issues to when it gets in the way of the dog actually living a fulfilling life as a pet and property to a human being. Dogs like other animals value things differently from humans, and I believe that anthromorphisizing animals leads to more misunderstandings of how they actually feel and don't feel about certain things.

This explanation is a bit simplistic and misses out some very important information. No, dogs were not initially "bred just to create breeds" nor for any other random or subjective aesthetics. Not at all. They were bred and selected to work, to help man. A wolf would just eat your sheep after all, one selcted to guard the sheep was far more usefull. Even a pug was bred for a purpose, that of companionship, to keep the owner warm at night, personal alarm dogs etc and even pugs were once not deformed health compromised waste of spaces. Dogs only became genetic messed up inbreds when gene pools were closed with the miss guided notion of maintaining purity arrived. The notion of purity itself is a long story. Parallel to this dogs were still bred to work primarily, many of these were never bred within closed gene pools. It wasn't until showing dogs became fashionable amongst high society that many breeds were bred for the sole purpose of very subjective looks alone and within closed gene pools. Even then working dogs bred in open gene pools continued to be bred. As long as they had a working function and were needed for that function they were bred along strict lines of ability rather than exacting looks. Today you may find both showing genes and working ones in a small handful of dogs. The showing dogs are the Hapsburgs of dogs bred in closed stud books and bred for ever extreme looks. The future of these latter dogs is extinction unless breeders are able to forget the Nazi principles of purity which will end genetic bottle necks and genetic diseases and step back from breeding them for extremes in looks that compromise health and function.

Love this so much. I don't know how anyone who claims to love dogs can happily live with a brachycephalic breed just watching it suffer - especially pugs, frenchies and bulldogs who seem to be the most affected. By buying these dogs, you're also contributing to the issue by encouraging more breeding. Even if you find an 'ethical' breeder - the problems are already bred into every individual purebred dog - and it's too late to fix them. You didn't mention it but a couple of the clips also showed people dressing dogs up. This really makes me uncomfortable. Most, if not all, dogs find getting stuffed into outfits stressful...why would you do this to your beloved pet for your own entertainment? Selective breeding is nothing more than artificial or induced evolution. Animals usually choose their own partners to mix their genes.

I had a British bulldog called Ozzy, he was my favourite boy. He was so sweet and relaxed, but despite him being a bit lazy, he would always get up to see me, he’d beg for the food on the table, and leftovers which were healthy for him were given. He shed a lot, he snored when he slept. He had severe seizures when we had to put him down because of how bad it was, leaving him unresponsive to his name, to my voice. I am now thinking more about the panting and tiredness he sustained while walking. I don’t know if his seizures were caused by his breathing, but it haunts me now. Breeding of these dogs like this is a problem. For hope, there are pugs being created with better breathing. I’d recommend finding reputable breeders, or if you want to give help to a dog with these issues you can find rescue shelters.

As a 'cat person', I can't say that I care for dogs or ever really have; but I have always felt so badly for pugs. I must also mention that I don't believe that it makes sense to only be appalled by the existence of pugs when every single breed has been inbred and engineered to bring you what you love today. This is why I think that it's even more insane-the thought that this is what the ruling class has produced as it spawn on Earth, a testament to the hearts of man.

Actually dogs do not descend from the grey wolf, rather they are the canine that's the most genetically similar to dogs. Kinda like what Neanderthals are to us. They shared a common ancestor many, ages ago. And we do not know what they were like exactly.
@RyuHardGore20 күн бұрын
sure? because i'm sure you can cross dogs with wolves
@nebulabunny863320 күн бұрын
@RyuHardGore yes. We can also cross donkeys and zebras with horses, big cats with other big cats (lions, tigers, leopards), polar bears with grizzly bears. And you already know that despite them not being as close together as gray wolves and dogs, coyotes can also mix with them. The last common ancestor was probably 80.000 years ago and it was not the gray wolf, it was an unknown species according to mitochondrial DNA and sequencing
@nebulabunny863320 күн бұрын
@RyuHardGore my point is that the species don't really need to be that close together in order to crossbreed
@twilisols14 күн бұрын
They actually do need to be quite genetically close to produce fertile offspring. Dogs and wolves are more like humans and Neanderthals than humans and chimps, since chimps are a separate genus (pan) and Neanderthals were the same genus as we are (homo). (Edited because I get that you said "kinda" but it's still a misleading comparison.) The difference is that humans' closest genetic relatives are now extinct, while dogs' are still living. Dogs and wolves are also far genetically closer than species who are able to breed, but have sterile offspring, such as horses and zebras. The best comparison you made was the example of polar bears and grizzly bears, since pizzly bears are actually fertile as far as we know. This of course doesn't mean that dogs descend from modern wolves, but it does mean they are very closely related - to the point where it's debated if they are separate species or just subspecies. There's a whole "species problem" in evolutionary theory about where we should draw the line, so whether dogs and gray wolves should be considered entirely separate species is a matter of debate even among scientists.
@twilisols14 күн бұрын
I think "many ages" is also misleading because tens of thousands of years is barely any time, evolutionarily speaking. Humans' closest known ancestor, homo erectus, lived 2 million years ago, and we evolved fairly recently (~300,000 years). If we're using human history as a scale, 27,000-40,000 years is a long time, but on an evolutionary time scale, that's quite recent.

Humans aren't inherently bad, but most turn out to be bad due to the encouragement by those who are in power and due to inherent laziness of the brain that exists in all creatures. Once the human gives in to that laziness and doesn't resist the encouragement to be destructive for the benefit of the few who make money off of destruction we can then see a multitude of damages that a human inflicts upon not only animals but the human specie itself.

slightly unrelated but your style of editing & narration is so good! :3 excited to see more videos of yours. you delve much deeper into this topic & the history of pugs than any other video i’ve seen too! my favorite dog breeds are golden retrievers & dalmatians, i generally prefer more “natural”-looking breeds if that makes sense? it makes me feel like they’re not suffering just by being brought into life. i wish all dogs could be as healthy and happy, able to run, play and live their life to its fullest without struggling to breathe. i have a cat, he’s a mixed breed so he has it better than “pure” himalayans but he’s still part-himalayan and it makes me worry about his future - i didn’t breed him myself obviously, i adopted him from a relative and i want to give him the best life i can, and make him the healthiest he can be despite how unfortunate the circumstances of his birth were

2:38 Actually, genome comparison shows that dogs are not a separate species, but _a subspecies_ of wolf.
@redimane115212 күн бұрын
That's debatable. More recent evidence shows that they both evolved from an extinct species of wolves, making grey wolves and dogs sister species.
@John_Weiss12 күн бұрын
@@redimane1152 I'm still pretty sure that they're both _subspecies_ of that extinct ancestor. Like I said, the super-high degree of match between the Canis Lupus Lupus and domestic dog genomes has the latter currently classified as Canis Lupus Familiaris, a _subspecies_ of Canis Lupus. Now, you are correct in that dogs didn't evolve from the Grey Wolf subspecies; I mean, nature _is_ messy and the evolutionary history of different species is never neat and tidy. But to insist that Domestic Dogs are "a separate species" not only flies in the face of genome comparison, but has several sometimes problematic reasons behind it: (1) Wanting "man's best friend" to remain on its pedestal as special, which in turn comes from the egotistical human desire to make anything associated with us "special" and "higher"; (2) Ensuring the demonization Gray Wolves doesn't slip, by keeping them as separate from "man's best friend" as possible; (3) Refusal to believe that animals which look so, so, _so radically different_ are all biologically the same, which itself originates in the _horrid_ ideology that appearance determines fundamental biological differences, something that is still being used to classify some people as "not-really-human" based on appearance. And it's #3 that has me pushing back on you so hard. Nothing against you, specifically. I've just had this argument way, way too many times: Starts with me pointing out that the domestic dog genome and gray wolf genome show that they're both the same species. Other person then freaks out, insisting that a Pit Bull and a German Sheppard can't be the same species, let alone a Pug and a German Sheppard, so obviously a dog can't be a wolf! I then have to explain what different dog breeds _used to_ look like 300 years ago, only to be faced with massive pushback and denial. And, ultimately, the topic then changes to _humans,_ because if a Pug, a Pit-Bull, a German Sheppard, a Beagle, and a Dachshund can all be the same species, then that would mean humans with one complexion+facial-features would have to be the same species as humans with another complexion+facial-features. Sadly, I've had this conversation many, many, many times over the past 30 years. I am *_NOT_* accusing you of thinking this, BTW. I am giving you the reason why I'm pushing back on this continued attempt to keep Canis Lupus Familiaris separate from Canis Lupus Lupus and the other 30+ subspecies of Canis Lupus. It really is both sad and horrid that this carp about humans keeps happening, and pointing to domestic dog and domestic cat breeds is one way to undermine this barbaric thinking.

@@John_Weiss Your right about that, especially because they can mate and make fertile offspring. That's my bad. You make some really interesting points too that I agree with. @John_Weiss2 күн бұрын
@@WreckItRolfe No, _my _response to #3_ is emotional. The actual argument - that animals with different appearance _cannot_ be biologically-related - is an argument that people make. And _furthermore,_ the reason behind that argument - that if dogs which look radically different are all the same species, then _humans_ with different complexions are the same species, and some people can't have that - is an argument *_that I have heard, read, and see firsthand._* So, don't you _dare_ try to dismiss an argument that I have _directly_ seen people use as "not a real argument."
