The Enoshima Electric Railway is a popular scenic railway line on the pacific coast, 50 kilometers in the south of Tokyo. It is also called Enoshima Dentetsu, making the shortened form "Enoden".
The line extends from Fujisawa to Kamakura - on a way with a total lenght of only 10 kilometers.
There are many major tourist attractions in this area as the worldwide known Kōtoku-in-Temple with its monumental bronze statue of Amida Buddha (near Hase station).
Enoshima itself is a small offshore island south of Fujisawa, featuring magnificent views on the Sagami Bay and even to Mount Fuji (on clear days).
Although the line is rather short, the 34 minutes trip is really enjoying. The route passes through densely populated areas, the lack of space is visible everywhere. For a moment the train passes the backyard of some houses, then following the middle of a street as a tram line, just before traveling along the beautiful seaside.
It is quite popular for weekend trips from Tokyo.
The entire line has only a single track, there are 4 stations and one additional signal stop featuring passing loops. The timetable is tight, there are usually 6 trains operating at the same time. In addition with pretty short stops at both terminus stations, the normal train interval is 12 minutes per direction. (remember the single tracked line!)
Another impressive feature are the beautiful historic trainsets of Enoshima Dentetsu which are usually combined with newer ones.
Furthermore the Enoshima Dentetsu is also well-known in Japanese media culture, as it is often shown in TV-shows, films and animes. (e.g. "High and Low" (1963), "Kimi ga Nozomu Eien" or "Elfen Lied")
The line accepts Pasmo and Suica cards, but it has a higher basic fare than other transport companies in this area. (starting with 190¥)

Oh yes.... This is by no means among the "cool trains" of Japan, but what it lacks in coolness, it more than compensates for in charm. This line is the source of some of my fondest "train memories" of Japan, both when I was visiting as a tourist, and now, as a resident. I've taken this line numerous time, to either Enoshima, Kamakura or Fujisawa - all great places, best experienced in time for sakura or summer. Great video as always Amin - you captured the atmosphere perfectly of this charming line.

You found the right words again. That day was my first and only time at Enoshima and Kamakura and I would also say the whole trip is doubtless one of my most impressive memoirs of Japan. Sakura mhm... there must be just tooo many places to visit in the short 'sakura-season', it might be really exhausting for photgraphers, please chose the right ones wisely and get some beautiful impressions when the time comes!^^ Thank you very much for watching and your comment!

What a fantastic video ! I love the way the train transitions from street to railway again ! I have watched literally hundreds of hours of Japan railfan video's and travelled vicariously, thousands of miles over Japan's rail network. I don't suppose I will ever get to see the real thing, but it's so good people like you have taken time and trouble to post these vids on You tube, so we can all share the great nation of Japan's railways, not to mention the country and people themselves. If I were ever fortunate enough to visit, I'm afraid they would have to throw me out because I would never want to leave ! I appreciate all your great vids, although my prefference are for the quiet backwater lines, like Kisuki (my favourite) where little Kiha 120's go about their unhurried business through the best countryside ever !

I'm really happy that people like you still exist - it's exactly because of this point of view why I'm making videos. It also seems like we share the same passion for Japanese rural railway lines somewhere in nowhere. So I really have to thank you for your comment! My favorite is the nearby Sanko Line with the same Kiha 120 trains in blue-livery. I think we both are watching these amazing landscape+trains impressions on "nimo5"´s channel ;D (just in case if you're interested in a quite detailed english map of JR West's network: goo.gl/MKN5AT copy+insert url) :) It's a little shame that vacations and budget are this limited, I could have been there forever too, but I'm still happy that I got to manage this 3-weeks-trip last year, this chance might probably never come again. I hope you'll have the opportunity to visit this amazing country by yourself! Greetings from Germany Amin

Very much appreciate your gracious reply. Again let me thank you for your most enjoyable videos - I know it's hard work with editing, traveling and being in the right place for that special shot. A lot more goes into a good film than just pointing and shooting ! Yes, you are right about Nimo5 and his work too. He, like yourself, has a gift for wonderful videography as well as an empathy for his surroundings be they natural like water, plants, animals or man made objects. I myself feel a closeness with Japanese people because of their respect (virtually no graffiti) for their environment and their respect for each other (I love the salutes, bows and 'pointing' associated with all railway staff) Japan in places looks more like my own native country than my country ! I know I feel 'at home' when I watch all the videos from various You Tube contributors. As for those Kiha diesel units ! I only wish there were a 3' 6" gauge here, rather than the ridiculous 4' 81/2". It would be something to see one or more of those great units doing cross country routes here ! Anyway, thank you once again - no need to reply to this unless you wish. Liked and subscribed to your channel. Shimon. (England)

Perfect visual accompaniment to Asian Kung-Fu Generation's Surf Bungaku Kamakura album. The whole record was written with the length of the Enoden Line in mind, and each song is named after each stop along the way.

In Deutschland so wohl kaum vorstellbar. Und Menschenmassen! Ich dachte schon, die Doppeltraktionen seien überdimensioniert. MfG Jan

Vielen Dank!

Does this train pass through Zushi? I lived there during the early 70s. Very nice travelogue video.

Thank you for your comment! :) This line passes through the sama area (along the Sagami Bay), but its eastern terminus is already in Kamakura, about 4 kilometers from Zushi. But it is only one station from Kamakura to Zushi by the JR Yokosuka Line.

Tramcar Trev Yes I think so, but I don't know much about this type. Except for one being preserved all of them have been withdrawn until the late 1950s.
