There were similar occurences for examples with Vietnam veterans returning home. One could make an argument in two directions going from there: That the military has always attracted people who felt more at home in some sort of parallel, off-gridd world that is not connected to normal civilian life, or that the experience of war and combat, and possibly disenfranchisement after returning home has created a sense of not belonging to society, or to the country any more which therefore led to creating a secluded, parallel kind of world with different rules than in the rest of the country.
