Gorgeous, beautiful music and performance, thank you! The ensemble plays totally connected, sensitive, reactive and absolutely attentive to sound and nuance. This is one of my favourite works from the 1950-s, I just call it Stockhausen's "Farewell Symphony" by the analogy of the gradual departure of the instruments (from playing, that is...) The slow process in the background renders the beautiful events in the foreground "bubbles on the surface of time" (to borrow Cage's words). I wish the world would one day realize how much they need Stockhausen (and a few others of us...) Gyula Csapo

Gyula csapó, thank you very much for your sensitive and intelligent comment. It's nice to come across such reactions to Stockhausen's music. Most other comments on this video deserve a "like" as well.

Sehr schön beweglich, fragil und artistisch , vital gespielt.... die Seele des Stücks leuchtet durch diese wundervolle Interpretation bis in die heutige Zeit hindurch..........

I don't know why it seems to be impossible to enjoy a Stockhausen piece. I love Sorabji, Xenakis, Lutoslawski, Ferneyhough, and Ligeti; but I'm yet to hear a single composition by Stockhausen that isn't an absolute chore to tolerate. I realize the composers I listed are of different schools, but many people seem to find Stockhausen more accessible than Sorabji, Xenakis, and Ferneyhough especially. I don't understand why.

This piece has a concise and natural way of emerging ESSENCE with incredible sonic variety. The rain description above helps with understanding the composer's intent.

The recording and the score from the local library fascinated me when I was studying music at school, and propelled me into seeking out scores and recordings by Boulez, Berio, Ligeti and the like. Now own my own score and this is still one of my favourite pieces of music.

So eine schöne und authentische Sternenmusik - K.S. hat später gesagt, dass seine Musik eigentlich vom Sirius komme... den barocken Komponisten geläufig... wenn man diese Klänge/ Musik hört... mag man wieder daran glauben

I Love Stockhausen as an artist, I consider him significant, however his significance is in the contrast to convention of his time, he’s punk. Seeing the bigger picture of music, Stockhausen is not as significant as westerners might think. Since chance music comes from a philosophy, and that is not a western philosophy. Specifically music from Buddhist cultures like ancient Japanese court music emphasizes chance and deemphasizes anticipation. Let me say this thought from a different angle, nothing is new under the sun, what seems groundbreaking isn’t. Like equal temperament is an ancient idea from China, but wasn’t implemented until industrialization. The significance of an artist is how they are able to truly be themselves and channel what they are trying to channel in a time that doesn’t allow for it. Hence I love Stockhausen, he’s a true artist and punk.

What a colorful piece of music. I remember my first reaction to Stockhausen, I was terribly disgusted because of this kind of harmony. Now I "understand" the beauty of this style.

***** Well would you care to help me out in here? I liked the vast majority of Stockhausen's works right of the get-go... what's the deal with Kontra-punkte?

hello, friend. what I do is that listen to The same piece over and over again for one day, maybe a week, after some time I start to know what comes next and how to whistle The music. so...hehehe, my advice (just because u asked) is that you have to listen to The piece 8 hours a day until it gets conquered, by your heart, mind and soul!!! :D

Jorge Castillo thanks a lot, friend ;) I think you're right. Ever since I commented a year ago, I listen to the piece every now and then. And it's becoming more "available" as a function of time.

@@PiEndsWith0 If you check out this lecture series, I think Stockhausen gets quite deep into his compositional ideas when writing this piece. I wrote an analysis of this piece for university and watching these lectures really helped me 'get it' so to speak! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oorQfot4Zcpkbac
