Enshrouded is an upcoming Co-op Survival Action RPG from the developers of Portal Knights. After spending 20 hours with an early build, I think it's got loads of potential. This could be the next big survival game. Let's check it out.

I found an odd place of dirt and broken columns. I decided to blow some holes into the dirt and it unearthed a LONG stone passage. Finally at the end, after finding a few chests, I found huge metal door that wouldn't let me through till the LIVE game. Now, since the game goes live tomorrow on 1.24.2024, I get to find that place and see what is beyond those huge metal doors!

Loved it so far after many hours of giving it a try. By far, the building system is my favorite. Dont know if other games have done it this way, but the modular blocks that all chain together in different ways, depending on where they interface with an adjacent building block, is pretty insane. Even with the limited pallette i had a lot of fun just sculpting the land and adding different floors and levels. Really interested to see what becomes of it.

Spot on assessment. The demo impressed me far more than I thought it would, but I've also had my reservations about just how much there is to do in the world - re: dungeons, etc. Also reservations about how much initial content will be there for the amount of building textures and pieces. Much as I love CE, I hope they don't go that route of using the same DLC over and over that's just reskinned. I'd really like to see some genuinely unique new pieces and textures. I'd love to be able to build an underground fortress, or in some huge sewer or something different. The traversal is definitely a whole lot of fun. Wishlisted for sure.

The game looks very promissing. I Actually like it, that you have to train some "base" fighting mechanics, it gives you the feeling of starting out as a normal person that slowly develops into a true warrior. The game looks very nice and the world design is beautiful. that game is a must buy for me.

bosses in survival games need to be interesting, it cant be just a hack and slash down. I would love for all the bosses to have unique and difficult mechanics that are fun to learn and maybe get destroyed a few times, then when you finally beat them you can claim their legendary loot for an all more satisfying feel.

Ideally bosses in survival games should not be couch potatoes waiting to be killed. Most enemy bosses should be actively traveling and impacting the world yet this rarely happens because developers are too busy copying the past instead of trying to evolve the gaming world.

You should try out the survival game called Grounded, all the bosses in that game have different attack patterns and stages and game can be pretty ruthless but rewarding. Highly suggest it if you like survival games its one of the best out there and very in depth

@@ROFLWAFFLELAWL4 Valheim would have been better if the enemy bosses were traveling and harming the lands, ocean and air. Waking up sleeping bosses which are not doing anything bad... just to kill them had me feeling like the bad guy.

I played through Portal Knights, the developer's last game, and did enjoy the boss fights from that game. They felt varied and interesting, so I know they know how to make fun content. Hopefully this game gets the attention and dev time it needs to become good. It has a lot of potential but it does feel very shallow right now.

Also I disagree with the abilities being part of the initial gameplay. Having them unlock as you level gives you the sense of progression that most games fail to provide. Most games make you feel like you are already a god and occasionally your damage goes up. You won't feel it as much as you would when you can only do basic movements then suddenly you can double jump, reaching higher areas than you could before. Trust me on that one.

Having played the actual beta through.... other means. I can say that the world is expansive. But for me it's all a bit too fast. You get the glider super fast (within the first 10 minutes if you want) same with the grapple hook. Which makes the world feel kinda small and makes the progression way too quick. You also can only build inside the area of your flame altar. This leads to me just picking out cool looking locations for a base but then not really caring about the world topography at all. Sometimes slow is better. Valheim needed some thought into where you built for different reasons. Like no fast travel with metal. This pushed you to make ports, carts, boats. My group spent hours mining out copper into a cart then working together making roads to get it home. That was so fun, it built community with us, it made certain locations prime real estate..... This? I can just port to one of the tall towers. Fly where I need in 1 minute. get the resource. then port straight home. (Collecting NPCs is a major part of the game. I can grab them all in under 30 minutes because of the towers. It's way too easy. ) This world they've crafted is so primed for forward bases deep in the shroud. Bridges across the mountains. Roads to resource nodes. Etc etc etc. But no... they've made it way too easy to get around, making the idea of any of that feel worthless. I hate that they've done this. Im an efficient person. If there's a shortcut, I will take it. I wish I could disable the fast travel, make the building buildable anywhere, have the altar actually hold back the shroud (so that deep inside you would use the forward base to keep you safe while getting deeper in), make it harder to get the glider. And make the grapple points craftable so you could create cool grapple hook traversal points. If they changed these things I'd be pretty excited for it. Though now after 10 hours in the beta it just feels like a loop of Teleport, Glide, Loot, Teleport home, repeat. (You can't directly teleport out of the shroud but quitting to the menu takes you home. Also something that needs changed. Logout location needs saved. ) I don't feel invested in this world at all. Topography doesn't give me fun ideas for helpful bases. You can make multiple altars and bases but.... for what? You just drop one on your way between destination to respawn / port to. Then pick it up when you move on. They have awesome systems, awesome world, Awesome ideas. Then they break it all apart with making it feel fast and shallow. Altars are also per save. Not per person. So you can place 2 altars to start. So I hope you like living with all 15 of those other players it wants to support. Not 2 bases each. To period. In a building game? Ridiculous choices.

That's a valid point. Kinda ruined any excitement I had for the game tho. Also highlights the intellect and skill of the Valheim developers. Devs with that level of ability don't come along very often tho. Only other I can think of is Gary Numan(if that's how his name's spelt)😅

@cmcc3721 I get a good since from the MMO Once Human. They are riding a great line between survival and them park rpg. And a good line between easy and difficult travel with a few vehicles to make it fun. I think what enshrouded really needs is Attacks cost stamina (no more stun locking) Rolls do I frames. Remove teleporting Add vehicles of some sorty and the ability to build your own grapple points. And then remove building restrictions and world space resetting. So we can build infrastructure. If they did that I'd love the game. As it is now its... meh.

also for me, I like my base being raided like in valheim. So that it forces me to make defenses instead of just a house. Here I see none, just a normal house with crafting/farming/etc system. Also the map being 8x8km(same size as largest pubg map) and 16 players with fast travel seems abit small to me and would most likely speed run the game. So far I don't see much replayability, hopefully they have indepth dungeon, hard bosses that actually scales well with players and long storyline to make up for it.
@jairusstrunk94
@jairusstrunk94 6 ай бұрын
@stevea1089 no. You need the grapple to get past one of the very first obstacles. And the glider is a very basic recipe. Along with the towers being very easy. Palworld gives you gliders early. But they are extremely weak and running out of stamina will kill you. Meanwhile if you run out of Stam while gliding in this you just fall to the ground, but no damage. I find this game very childish and easy. I'll be skipping it for a very long time while I play palworld instead. Also as stated. I've played full beta version of the game. It's easily findable on pirate sites.

I think backstabs and jump attacks should get unlocked after doing some challenges which after your character would learn the actual skill. So for backstabbing you could say kill 50 enemies from behind in order to unlock it. Jump attack could have a sluggish form of doing it and once you have killed fx 50 enemies you would unlock the fluid version of jump attack doing more damage etc

What you hit on with the skill tree and the limited combat is my biggest reservation about this game. My son and I enjoyed playing Portal Knights and the simple combat in that was part of the charm and made the game very accessible. I was hoping for something a bit more that would reward combos with elements in your attacks or maybe timings for interrupts/stuns/silences and things like that. Right now the bosses and mobs are just an easy attack it a bunch with no real mechanics behind them. I'm still really looking forward to the game but without the improvements in combat and enemy AI, I don't see this holding my attention for long. Still, if the price point is around $35 for EA, it'll be well worth that imo even with some of the cons.

My biggest questions right now are how does grouping work and how do clans/guilds work? It seems as though every player gets their own alter and with it, the ability to build their base. Which appears to have a limited size based, perhaps on alter tier. Will we be able to form clans/guilds, and if so, how will that affect base building? My only real experience with the survival game genre is Conan Exiles, which forced players in a Clan to share a base and resources. A system which I did not mind, but could be rather limiting when it came to freedom of expression in terms of base build design, location, etc. I have a friend who HATED that aspect of the game play. Likewise, with grouping, it was not until more recently that CE added the simple ability to actually form a group and make it so grouped players could see each other's health and avoid hitting them accidentally, etc. So, I am very interested to learn how these mechanics will be implemented in Enshrouded.

they will need to add procedural generation at some point when they handcraft enough bosses, instances, buildings, and so forth to support it... A game like this needs that replayability, but for now, one map will do just fine for at least 100 or so hours. can't fucking wait for this cool ass game. hopefully, the day before passes the time. they also need to make the glider and grappling hook take a bit longer to acquire.. giving away endgame shit way too quickly isn't satisfying at all. I can see their ambition throughout this game and I can't wait to see the future of this game. Bosses will need a health multiplier with the number of people that have joined the game, enemies can keep the same hp or just give them a tiny bit extra hp.

The tutorial area which is all that's playable in the Demo doesn't represent the full game. The only reason for it being so easy is the tutorial purpose. I don't think more combat skills should be available from start. You level pretty fast and the way the game/skill tree is built opens the opportunity to create various different builds that are also different in combat. Otherwise combat would just feel the same for a long time on every character. Might should have mentioned how different it feels and plays compared to valheim but others than that I really enjoyed the video !
@Phillz91
@Phillz91 10 ай бұрын
The thing is that locking core combat abilities behind a skill point is just not that interesting or engaging. The speed of levelling is just a bandaid fix for the underlying issue, lack of combat variety. It would be much more meaningful to have skill points modify the core skills, like the blink on dodge. As an example, move the jump attack to a core skill as a high mobility but weaker attack. Then you can add skill nodes that give it an AoE, or increase single target damage, or increase jump range for mobility. Do that for the other two core skills with interactions between them and you have added more meaningful choices while also adding more variety to combat while you are levelling and allowing for more buildcraft as you combine interactions and weapons in different ways.

@@Phillz91 to me it is because only that way I can define my characters play style in a way that it feels 0erfectly balanced to my needs without anything that I don't use. What do most people use in valheim or breath of the wild ? Right, Parry and basic attacks. This here is just people criticizing an indie studio because it's not how some people are used to approach combat. It's not dark souls or any other arpg. It's just a phantastic game made by a small indie studio that provides a lot more than combat. Sure combat is a major part of it depending on how you play but it doesn't do much less than most games in that genre except for getting rid of things most people don't use anyways and to give you the tools to define your play style. The whole game has so much more to offer that focusing on combat that much feels like a total waste. It's smooth and feels good while offering me choices to approach it in the way I want. Don't need it to be more than that tbh. But of course people are different and so are opinions and that's fine.
@Phillz91
@Phillz91 10 ай бұрын
@@sonoftristram It is completely possible to create a system that is different from it's contemporaries and not go backwards though. The other games have ways to differentiate playstyles and combat whilst still giving the player choice in their combat (such as special abilities on weapons, common in the game examples you mentioned etc). The problem is that the system, as it is now, is an arbitiary reduction of the players choices (down to single button combat) only to give those choices back for the illusion of progression. The dev is completely able to make that artistic choice, but players are also able to provide constructive feedback on why that choice just isn't fun. Combat and progression are still pretty big parts of the game so if it doesn't feel good then it will turn people away. Simple is fine, but simple doesn't mean you can't have depth.
@sonoftristram

@@Phillz91 it's not an illusion if it's part of your progression. You will have depth but not directly from start. Valheim for example isn't doing much more except that combat feels more stiff there + there's no things like skills to learn new moves but can't see anyone saying combat being too simple there. If it was that much of a deal and a real problem I'm sure I would've seen the game being criticized for it more often. Just my opinion.

I completely agree about the skill tree! Getting the basics (jump attacks, finishers, sneak attacks, etc.) through a skill point sink feels bad, and it gates an otherwise solid combat foundation. I concur that these skills should be enabled by default and the skill tree should instead be focused on exciting changes to existing abilities or perks to build around.

This game could be huge, just hope they can optimize it really well because it ran really bad on my pc even on low, i see they are using propietary engine, they could turn this into a Minecraft type game with a more mature tone, with basically infinite content as the engine is voxel based but we will see how they handle it, the game dont look that impressive graphically even on max setting, makes me wish they had gone with a more stylized look maybe low poly or pixelart similar to Valheim but regardless it looks promising.

Ok I am now excited for this. Looks just like a game I have been itching to play for a while. Hope it is good.

Really hyped for what I am seeing so far and I saw another play through of the demo and it looked very positive. Even has NPCs that helps to bring life to the world. I tried Valheim but couldn't get into it strangely enough even though I like survival sandbox games. Though I mainly play Minecraft. But this game feels more polished and more like an RPG than a sandbox game which I like. I will definitely keep an eye on it.

you should really give Valheim another try its such a beautiful game and so much fun if your on pc I recommend to make a macro for the roll because how they have roll in the game I absolutely hate but as soon as I figure out about macros it fixed the issue i used logitec so i put it on one of my buttons on my mouse and it only does the macro when valheim is open so i dont have to change it every time

I never liked Valheim and it looks poor. This game I like. Doom, I think this is Minfield with better graphics which is a good thing.

I'm looking forward to playing this game, however UI looks off to me. Especially action bar and inventory.

agreed. the UI design cheapens the game and gives it a mobile feel. nonetheless im still playing this on release. LET US IN!!!!!!!!! 30min more

starter area is way less dense by all means than the areas farther away from spawn. there are far better bosses rest assured. an the building gets way more satisfying when you get alot more familiar with the voxel based system, def a steep learning curve. the demo is too short an restricted too really good a good impression but def top of my steam wishlist. (one of the beta testers here with one of the highest amount of hours sunk into the beta)

Having put over 60 hours into the Beta, I concur. The Demo is not a great representation of the difficulty, and expanse of mechanics.

Always enjoyed the various ARPG aspects of survival/crafting games. But so far, almost everything I've tried just doesn't go far enough with the loot/reward and skill systems (if they have any at all). This looks just about right. Will check if my current system can run it well enough and I'll def wanna try it. Otherwise I'll have to wait 'till next year when I put a new system together (7800XT, 7800X3D, 64GB RAM etc).

What do you think about this game's longevity? ARPG is getting to be a pretty big category now.

It looks like a beautiful game, except I do agree with you about the attacks and skill tree. The limited variety of attacks might get a bit boring.

I wish this game would try to be more a mix of Skyrim and minecraft than some ubisoft version of valheim. The building does have the ability to be very good. Would love to play «minecraft» with great action combat and great graphics on big online servers.

The skill tree does seem like a dampener. I also like procedural generated worlds too. Hoping they blow my mind like Valheim did.

agreement on the combat being a little simple and certain aspects should already be unlocked from the beginning.

my hope is that when it goes into EA or in the future, that inside one of the mountains we'll just find a massive city that looks like Moria. and if there isn't one, then by the gods above my friends and I are going to make it lol

Enshrouded areas: The Hourglass doesn't always replenish your enshrouded timer back to full. Also, there are other measures to replenish your timer with items in the enshrouded areas. These areas are also typically where you will resurrect if you die in the enshrouded area.

It all looks pretty great but for the love of god I hope they actually have good character creation/customisation. If you’re gonna do a survival adventure game you gotta let players create the characters they would love playing as!

If this sounded or looked like valheim to you then you didn't listen/watch 😅 It's not even close the simple gameplay of valheim. I play valheim since it went into early access and Enshrouded is very different in many things.

It's like Valheim meets Dying Light 2 with the simple combat and traversal (and more cartoony graphics) of Immortals Fenyx Rising...I'll file it under maybe.

i have to disagree on the skill point unlocks the things you want are all melee focused , if you are not playing a melee focused character then those are wasted skills. not every character need to be a badass melee build plus what you want then the ranger and mage will feel down played.
