Dear Enzo, The rings of the blade are known, and I will explain them to you. Simply put, because they are heavy and rock back and forth, they change where the balance is by their momentum and arc. In that way a master can hide their chi in the rings to a variety of effects. But anyone can understand what is going on with simple physics. Imaging swinging a sword into a tree. A blade without rings becomes lodged in and needs to be pulled out. Yet for a blade with rings, a variety of things might happen. Imagine the rings are swinging at such and angle that right when the blade first hits the tree, the rings swing to hit the back of the blade. Here there is an extra burst of weight going into the cut, and the blade will probably become lodged as well. But now imagine the rings are swinging at an angle where they move around after the blade cuts. Their impact will rock the blades weight and create a nudge for the hilt to unlodge. A master manipulates this dynamic aspect when they fight to hide angles and momentums in the blade, and move in unexpected ways. This is just one example. For defense, please consider that the blade of a weapon is sacred in battle, and you never want to let it dull. If you block, you block with the back of your blade and anyways that often lines you up to counter. If one attacks you and you can't dodge, then you want to intercept with the back of your blade. If that is just a line of smooth metal, you can use leverage to change the angle (assuming you don't let it slide up), but since the blade has rings, what will happen is the blade will be sawed on the ridges if it slides up, and likely become stuck in one, or anyways dulled. For a beginner, don't imagine picking a ring and catching a spear, imagine looking through all nine, then making and angle like a curtain, at lets say a 45 degree angle in front of you. If you have to defend, you're much safer with a ringed blade than a smooth metal one. These are just examples, as the rings have a variety of purposes. But I hope that they give you a better sense of how any why the nature of the ringed blade is a strategic choice rather than a decoration. I have also heard it said that a master can use the blade silently, as they are so skilled the rings never impact the sword even as they cut. That implies that they are always shifting the momentum of the rings intentionally, and it is not unreasonable to imagine that someone of that level would be able to choose a ring and catch a spear and break it. I thought the rings were meant to trap rapier-like swords durng fights??

@@JSharap I was told that they are not supposed to be welded shut, left with small gaps for the chance of snagging and controlling someone by the braided hair 😖 Seems like everything about the Chinese martial arts has like 102 different story’s…. Each more imaginative than the last. I think if you could find a truly honest kung-fu history book it would read like: “After tripping some serious balls on peyote hung-lee-won had a vision of the sun setting the moon on fire…. the next day he ran to his local black smith and had him craft the worlds first sun,moon,and fire wheels…. Knowing how lucrative a business it was to teach flowery martial arts he then developed a style to complement them…. And lived as happily ever after as a poverty stricken dude could The end”

One speculation is the ring actually changes the balance of the broadsword in a swing, when pointing the tip of the blade skyward the ring bring the balance of the sword closer to the handle, when going into a full swing especially the last bit the balance of the sword changes to more tip heavy. The rings on back of weapon also prevent over-penetration of the blade in the event it struck someone, this prevents the blade from being stuck in the body of the target and allow it to be removed relatively easily

We know exactly why these rings exist. Ringed blades are a very old and traditional part of Chinese martial culture. However they are purely for display and ceremonial purposes and have no practical use in combat. Ringed blades first appear during the Song dynasty as part of military parade weapons. Opera plays have long been a major part of Chinese culture and traveling opera troops were where many peasants got their knowledge of history and things like that. The warriors in opera plays were always dressed in costumes based on parade armor and carried prop weapons based on parade weapons. This meant lots of rings, tassels, flags, etc were attached to opera weapons. This became part of the culture and performances by martial arts troops at village festivals, by marketplace buskers, etc. Often used demonstration weapons with rings. Even when real weapons were used they would dress them up for demonstration by attaching brightly colored strips of cloth or tassels to their weapons. However today much of this has been forgotten and you have modern practitioners making up and passing on stories that try explain the practical combative purpose of all these flags, tassels, and rings attached to their weapons. Apparently it's not a purely modern thing though. Years ago I saw an old (I think Ming or early Qing?) Military text that had a specific warning saying that ringed blades or other parade weapons were never to be issued to troops being deployed for combat. The warning made it sound like it was an issue they were having even way back then.

This sounds the most likely. The part about troops using improper gear sounds about right. ...Damn new 'boots' are always getting suckered into 'cool gear' by merchants, in modern day and Ming china apparently hahahaha

There are a lot of blocks with the Dao where the back of the blade rests on your arm or palm. If you took a heavy blow from a staff it could do damage to your arm, but with these rings laying flat the pressure is spread over a wider surface and would be a lot more stable and comfortable. I learned Dao without the rings and often thought about that.

balance maybe, cuts pulling back rings slap backwards adding momentum. stops the sword from over penetrating in cuts and stabs so sword can easily be pulled back for next slash or stab. could help in splitting acting like a wedge, after the edge cuts the rings try separating each piece. or could be nothing lol

Considering the kind of use this one was for, the rings probably prevented the blade from going too deep when chopping or thrusting, in order not to stick in.

It becomes more difficult to slide a blocked or parried weapon down the back of the sword - a typical sticky technique to counter the block or parry. Heavy rings also change the balance point depending on whether they are pointed towards the tip or pointed towards the hilt - changes the pivot point which changes how fast some techniques will occur.

I saw a version of this sword with a longer handle (as long as the blade) and i liked the idea. Having a long handle make your reach unpredictable since you can change it at will and you can strike harder or quicker dépends on what you need. I really like this sword and maybe somone who knows these can tell me if à longer handle was used or is as practical as i think it can be 😁

i wonder if during the swing, when all the rings shift forward, would it add a little more momentum?

It definitely adds weight without having to increase the mass of the sword.

A master can cut so that any number of rings turns either direction by the time they hit. To answer your question, it depends on the size and weight of those rings. I've heard of grandmasters who wielded two 90 lbs 9 ring broad swords. If someone swings 180 pounds of anything at me, I'm gonna notice. The rings make the slice more slippery, their momentum affects how they bounce off a blade or bone. It can rock like an aikido Phi spiral.
