What Is Nipa | എന്താണ് നിപ വൈറസ് അറിയേണ്ടതെല്ലാം | Feliz Ayurveda
Nipah virus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae. It was first identified in Malaysia in 1998 during an outbreak among pig farmers. The virus is named after the village of Sungai Nipah, where the initial cases were detected.
Transmission:
Animal to Human: The primary hosts of the Nipah virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, particularly species of the genus Pteropus. The virus can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected bats, their bodily fluids, or through contact with pigs that have eaten contaminated fruit.
Human to Human: Transmission can also occur from person to person, especially in healthcare settings or through close contact with infected individuals.
Symptoms:
Initial Symptoms: The onset of the disease typically includes fever, headache, drowsiness, and respiratory issues such as cough and sore throat.
Severe Symptoms: As the disease progresses, it can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), causing symptoms like confusion, seizures, and altered consciousness. This can progress rapidly to coma and death.
Incubation Period: The incubation period (the time from exposure to the onset of symptoms) can range from 4 to 14 days, but it can be longer in some cases.
Diagnosis: Diagnosis of Nipah virus infection can be made through various laboratory tests, including RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction), virus isolation, and antibody detection through ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay).
Treatment and Prevention:
Treatment: There is no specific antiviral treatment for Nipah virus infection. Supportive care, including managing symptoms and complications, is the primary approach. Intensive care may be required for severe cases.
Prevention: Preventive measures include avoiding exposure to sick pigs and bats, avoiding consumption of raw date palm sap (which can be contaminated by bat excretions), and implementing strict infection control practices in healthcare settings.
