Great Big Story

Great Big Story

5 жыл бұрын

Some of the best roses in the world bloom in Kenya. While the country is widely known for its scenic national parks and wildlife reserves, it’s also a major flower producer. Winnie Gathonie Njonge is the production manager at Nini Flowers, which sits on the shores of Lake Naivasha. She knows all there is about growing perfect roses and oversees the harvesting of 300,000 to 450,000 a day. “The ultimate goal of growing roses is to make other people happy,” she says. It brings her joy to know the roses she cultivates are sent to the United States, Japan and other countries, spreading love and beauty all over the world.

Two things: 1. The world's flower market is in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Kenya produces some of the best rose flowers in the market. Flowers from Kenya get exported to Netherlands and rebranded with Dutch companies labels. The end customer will never have an idea as to the origin of the flowers. Same issue with Kenyan grown coffee and tea. They are used to improve coffee and tea from other parts of the world by blending. 2. The flower industry at Lake Naivasha has decimated the lake due to fertilizer and pesticides runoff. The lake's endemic fish species have suffered the most.
@isabelleer7501
@isabelleer7501 5 жыл бұрын
I thinking this was leaving some of the bad out. The stories about fertilizer are heart breaking. It can also be extremely harmful to the health of the people working in the green houses.

Interesting info. I hope they do something about the fertilizer runoffs affecting the lake's ecosystem.

Now you see, this is where a restrictions on artificial fertelizers would be most useful, and an encouragment on the use of compost would be most appreciated by Kenyans like you and me who want to preserve our country.
