1st I love and appreciate how Melicia provides commentary on these episodes. 2nd I applaud Chidi for having enough self-respect to withdraw himself from this very toxic situation. Rayne may very well be dealing with her own severe behavioral issues, however that does not excuse her verbal abuse and emotional abuse of Chidi. She literally called that man "evil" a "terrible person" a "scammer" a "b*tch" and none of that is acceptable at all, especially towards someone you claim to love. Rayne gave Chidi constant insults, humiliation, ridicule, it's very dehumanizing behavior. Even if Rayne was upset about an issue there are still ways she could communicate her message without attempting to verbally abuse Chidi and tear him down as a human. It was so cringe watching her berate Chidi in that manner. It's refreshing tho to see that Chidi has a support system from close family members. Rayne took things way too far, as usual, and she constantly disrespected her partner even in this current conversation. Chidi honestly dealt with a lot of verbal abuse and emotional abuse with this relationship, and never once on camera did he retaliate in kind. In my experience there is a double standard when a man says no to a woman for sex. More than a few woman have reacted super emotionally when I told them that I didn’t feel enough of a connection with them or a future with them, so I did not want to have sex. In my mind I was doing the most honorable thing by being honest and not wasting their time, when I didn’t see any future. The worst reaction I seen was a girl in college who called me all sorts of homophobic slurs, trying to shame and guilt me into changing my mind. When none of that worked she straight up attacked me. I had the opposite reaction from another girl who just broke down crying asking why I wasn’t attracted to her and why I thought she was so ugly. That had nothing to do with attraction at all but no matter how I tried to explain it, she made it about me not being attracted to her body, instead of just respecting her decision. I hate to make the comparison between men and women, because I know that women face real dangers when dealing with how to respond to a man’s sexual advances, and saying no without making them angry or violent. I feel like as a man I’ve been taught to deal with rejection in a respectful way and to never get angry or make a woman afraid, most importantly I’ve been taught to respect a woman’s decision. With some women, I think rejection happens so seldom, that teaching them to respond in a respectful manner, doesn’t ever come up in their upbringing. So when they finally face rejection especially sexual rejection from a man, they lose their shit.

As a woman who has reacted in similar way s to those you mentioned, I’ll say you’re right about the lack of experience with rejection. But additionally, I know some of my reactions (closer to the second you described) developed from trauma that wasn’t worked out,or even recognized, for that matter. A lot of women (of course men, too) experience sexual abuse very young and by early adult hood haven’t processed it yet or maybe even been conscious or consciously thinking about it. It leads to a lot of confusion and internal torment that expresses outward sometimes once someone else becomes involved in the triggering moment- like with a potential sexual encounter. Just some insight and more perspective. I do agree that we don’t face rejection so frequently which can play a role. society’s narrative of men being sex-obsessed and women being objectified in every manner and moment possible, with value based upon our appearance and desirability to men, can certainly distort our human brains. Editing to add that I’m sorry you were put in those uncomfortable and likely nerve-wracking situations! An explanation helps to understand but it certainly doesn’t excuse.

I like Chidi, thankful he has a very supportive family and friends. He may be blind but he’s sees so much clearer than Rayne. Remember Raynes mother’s friends said things about her, I can’t remember exactly what, they know she has problems. She is a very toxic person. Thank goodness this won’t drag on for a few seasons like Angela and Michael. Praying for Chidi to find a lovely person for him to have a good life, he deserves it. I would pray for Rayne, but I think I would waste those prayers on her, she will never change.

As much as this was telling of Rayne, it was also telling of the kind of man Chidi is. There’s a lot of men like him who allow such behavior and that alone is a flaw in itself showing that he cannot stand up for himself, which may turn women off. His condition is irrelevant as he had numerous opportunities to end the relationship. Both need therapy in order for their next relationships to succeed.
