I didn't get the judgmental feeling from him at all actually. It seems like he has reflected quite a bit on his own past behavior and is speaking on what he thinks would be the best route to take now that he has some hindsight. It makes total sense to get his perspective for many reasons and as someone who has shown some growth and also contrition for his past transgressions I think he was right on the money with his thoughts.
