When my mom was dying of cancer, it completly wrecked her body, the last 10 months of her life since it was discovered too late, she refused to meet anyone. She wanted them to remember her as she was and not the shell of a person that the cancer turned her into... it's very sad and heart breaking, and it's at no fault of anyone...

Same thing happened with my brother. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I wanted to see him before he passed away, but he specifically stated to our parents that he didn’t want me to see him being so sick. I was really hurt, especially after he passed away only several months later. 😢 Even to this day, I wish could’ve spent one last time with him and said goodbye, while he was still on the physical plane. 🙏🕯️

A good internet friend of mine passed away 10 years ago. I wanted to meet her for the first time, but she absolutely refused my visit requests. She said she didn't want me to see her like that. With huge amount of protest and tears later, I finally agreed but she would not stop me from coming after it all happened. I went to her funeral and met her parents and her spouse. It took over 20 hours to get there and 20 hours to get back. To this day it is one of the things I will never regret doing, but it did eat me up that I never got to say hi to her while she was alive, face to face. Don't take it personally Mr. Shatner, it does happen a lot to people.

While Star Trek is amazing (and I'm a lifelong nerd/geek/HUGE fan), he was absolutely BRILLIANT in Boston Legal. Much better acting, as, of course, you'd expect from someone later in a career. He definitely IS a legend. I met him at a horseshow once in Indiana where I grew up (at the state fair) and told him that I wanted to be an astronaut one day because of him. He told me that he'd really like to go into space one day, too. I'm glad he got to. At this point in my life, I think I'll pass. :)

Me too, 71, I can well recall joining the RAF in 1969 and the RAF Barmpton I was first posted to, we did not have TVs in our rooms that four airmen shared, but there were three small TV rooms in the camp NAFFI each having about 20 old cinema seats in four rows. They were often empty, but you could be sure that a good half-a'hour beforehand all the chairs would have gone and the room would be 'packed' easily with about 100 guys to watch Star Trek. Also, William Shatner when younger and in the first years of Star Trek's fame had a giant ego and most likely was not as sensitive to his fellow StarTrek actors including Leonard Nimoy but you can tell, as the tears appeared it really hurt him that his old friend cut him off at the end of his life.

My first and most enduring recollection of Bill was my father dragging me into our dining room in Montreal in about 1967, pointing to the tv set on which a Star Trek episode was playing, and saying "see him? he's your cousin!" I never imagined that, almost sixty years later, he'd be more famous than he was back then. He has a small army of cousins in Canada who'll waste no time boasting of their connection to him.

I've watched those productions " Star Trek Continues ". The production values are impressive. It's hard to believe it's an amateur production. But it really just reminds me how much I wish TOS had gone on for at least a 4th season....when I've watched this fan produced show I end up switching to TOS on Paramount +...lol... It's like a homesick feeling I experience. But I recognize there is no other amateur Star Trek series that even comes close to Star Trek Continues in terms of quality.

My father just allowed my mom and I there when he was dying of pancreatic cancer. He didn't want his coworkers that he worked with for 47 years at General Dynamics Electric Boat to see him in that horrible condition the chemo put him in.

@@Gamevet Radiation CAUSES cancer, and is still used to TREAT cancer. It kills the cancer at the area treated but causes secondary cancers. My dad was fortunate, in a way, that they caught it too late. His pancreas was "filled with tumors" when It was discovered. His aggressive chemo made his feet swell to an unbelievable size, he couldn't wear regular shoes, just the kind that overlapped material closed by velcro. He didn't want ANYONE to see him like that. I say he was fortunate because he didn't have to go through constant operations, parts taken from him, constant infections FROM to wound area, like I know of other people that have, who ultimately lose their battle anyway.

The comment about older people changing before they die happened to both my parents. When the body begins to slowly die it changes in so many ways, and I remember my father who was an absolutely wonderful man and was friends with everyone shunned his two brothers away. Little things that would never have bothered him became mountains and he shunned them until he died. They have told me they have felt the exact same way as William Shatner with Leonard Nimoy. They even used them as their example. It probably was that for Nimoy too.

Nice interview. I met Mr Shatner 2 years ago with his producer, and he signed some uncut sheets of cards from 1977- Topps. It's a picture with him and Mr. Nimoy on the back together. He signed right there on Nimoy. I thought about how he was feeling after a 14 hr day(830pm we are alone with Mr Shatner). I was in awe and didn't want to say anything silly of dumb. So we had basic conversation. The momment is recorded for the validity of the signing on my channel. These were my questions. About Mr. Nimoy. So nice. You pulled this off❤!

Shatner's assumption is most likely correct. When my father was dying, he didn't want to see anyone but immediate family. He sent his best friend off rather unceremoniously. It must be a perspective people have when they know they have limited time and energy. A good friend of mine died recently of cancer, I knew him for 34 years, and he never told me he was terminal. He just got distant and didn't really communicate. I'm sure chatting with friends was draining, and he didn't want sympathy. So, I don't think Nimoy had a falling out and kept it secret. He was slowly fading.

My best friend (and surrogate father) was quickly dying from heart disease. I (in New York) called him (in LA) too late. He was bedridden; he'd lost half of his vision and (most important to him) he could no longer drive a car. Driving is like a sacrament in Los Angeles. The town was built around driving. Driving is one true freedom in SoCal. When I finally got him on the phone (close to the end), he told me (gently) that he wasn't seeing any old friends--just two of his grandchildren who lived with him when they were growing up. We said our sincere goodbyes and I thanked him for all the things he taught me. We didn't drag it out--we just ended by saying "I'll see you around..." People are not necessarily themselves when they know they are dying--and that is not your fault--or there's...

I can't believe that is a 91 year old man, he looks like he is in his 60's. He is still so active too, he was just on the masked singer as one of the costumed characters singing and dancing. Talk about aging beautifully.

I listened to a podcast with Shatner recently, and I simply do not understand how he can still be so sharp and sensitive, and together. Literally, I did not think someone could possibly have such facilities at that age. I do know that old age somewhat marches slower for people with strong intellect, and the way in which he still speaks I think it is clear he still possesses a great capacity to think and to feel. Ghosts live long in those who have a good memory.

It is all too common for the really ill to cut themselves off from friends and family members. I think it's down to them not wanting to be seen as frail and to keep some sense of dignity before death. There needs to be more sociological and psychological research into this pattern of behaviour, which actually also occurs throughout the mammalian kingdom too (so it's not species-specific behaviour).

Yes. I have had that recently with a decades long friend who would speak on the phone but didn't want anyone visiting him while he was in palliative care pretty well through to the end. I understood completely and I think I would probably be the same. However he was still prepared to speak to me on the phone. Nimoy wouldn't communicate with Shatner at all so there may have been something more to it.

My grandpa didn’t want to see anyone as he was dying but we showed up anyway and I’ve never seen him cry before until he saw us in the hospital room. People try to act strong in the worse times but they need their loved ones

I understand how William Shatner feels I’ve had fallen outs with former friends of mine none of them haven’t passed away thank god but it just hurts me that some of the friends I’ve had fallen outs with bothers me that i will probably never see or hear from them ever again they don’t like me anymore and I don’t dislike or hate them I don’t like what they did to me or how they hurt me but I have no Ill Will feelings towards any of them I wish them well and I hope they are happy and enjoying their lives sometimes people change or just grow apart or they hurt or backstab or betray u and it’s just sad how sometimes people u were once very close to change over a certain period of time and just don’t like u anymore it’s a shame

Off the topic story. I had gone to a Star Trek convention when I was young (late 70's maybe). Got in an elevator and "Scotty" was on. Someone else got in and said, "bridge". Doohan wasn't amused. He also refused to sign an autograph for a little girl whose mom had politely asked, said he was tired. Maybe a bad day?

I had a friend who was my age and we were pals from age 12 till his death at age 47. No matter what was going on or where we were in our lives we talked in person or on the phone at least once a month till he died. He was diagnosed with cancer and never took another call from me or any of our mutual friends. Even his wife shut us out. If he had a funeral it was never publicized…Not judging. Everyone plays to their part..

It's really sad he couldn't see Leonard again before his death, but as mentioned in the interview sometimes when people know theyre dying they don't like being seen that way, and would prefer the person remember them the way they were. ☹

As I understand it, Shatner had asked Nimoy to participate in "The Captains" documentary, and Nimoy refused. Shatner then had his camera crew record Nimoy at a convention, and used the footage in the documentary without Nimoy's knowledge. That's reportedly why Nimoy was angry. This has been discussed publicly before, and for Shatner to say now that he doesn't know why Nimoy was angry, or even acknowledge the possibility, seems rather disingenuous.

To add some more context, Leonard was extremely protective of his likeness. He had butted heads with Gene multiple times and had sued Paramount I think over Spock merchandising without any compensation. So he wasn’t happy at all that Bill put him in that movie after he explicitly told him that he didn’t want to participate. He likely felt betrayed.

Love William Shatner, but the reason for his estrangement from Leonard Nimoy is well-documented. Shatner included clips of Nimoy in one of his documentaries after Nimoy had expressly and personally denied him permission (to use). Nimoy considered him dishonorable for doing so.

Nichelle Nichols life was tragic towards the end. I watched the documentary recently. Some of the scenes you could hear her screaming in the background. It was heartbreaking.

A couple of years ago, I was at a yard sale, inside the house for sale, was a framed double signed photos of Shatner...at first, I was not going to even bother asking how much, my wife at the time talked me into just asking.....the lady said "how about 20 bucks" - I don't think I have ever gotten a bill out of my wallet that quick. Both autos are certified and it hangs on my wall.
