I said this very thing in an earlier comment. It's like all of these people in the comments want to pretend as if this is not the case. There's a reason it's called a price. Emily's mom would have done some research about what traditional weddings are like in Africa. She sounds like she is not respecting Kobe's culture. As Africans if you are not traditionally married, you are not yet married. Period. Bride price, exchange of gifts and all.

They are considered legally married in Cameroon. The family is just not happy about it. But they are legally married

Emily's mum is allowed to have her reservations, if this is something she isn't used to. Maybe she needs time to process it. Whatever happens she is allowed to question something she doesn't understand.

Taking emily...? Girl, they live in your house. It is literally impossible for her to be taken lol. But the whole trip Emily's mom has been so standoffish, uppity, and rude to the locals and the traditions. Kobe has his awful friends, emily has her mom. I guess its even lol

It is Kobe’s tradition not Emilys tradition. Bride price should not come into play here because Emily is not an African woman.

Emily’s mom is completely in the right, it’s the principal of it. Much respect for her for standing her ground, it will eat at her if she proceeded becuase altho she’s not “selling her daughter” the tradition sure feels like it to her.

Melicia, you and your mom are too cute! I love the height difference! You can tell she stands tall and strong and has transferred that onto you. Yay to strong confidant women!

Most cultures have this. Before I got married, I also thought the same as Emily's mother, and how I didnt want my parents to "buy" me. During my engagement, I finally understood that it wasnt a "buying your daughter" deal. Because most parents will take it and give it to their daughter, for her own temporary financial stability after she has gotten married. Its for her to save and she has the right to chose who or what she wants to spend it on. Ofcourse, there are some parents who dont and they take it. But in this situation, she could just take it as a respectful gesture then give it to Emily. Not such a big deal.

Actually you are WRONG this custom DOES come from the premise of selling your daughter…. And it’s WRONG!

So a bride price is basically a dowry

I commend Kobe for standing up for his culture & his family. Emily’s mother is ignorant and close minded. I’m also proud of Emily for letting her husband lead, while adding her two cents to defend her family front. Good job guys! 👍🏽

In some cases? It's in every case. The man and his family pay the woman's family.
