Maxine has very quickly become an important character to me. I don't think I've ever felt so seen by a character. Every obstacle she faces is informed by her race, gender, sexuality and ambition and it was truly a blessing to see her story take center stage.
@EricaGamet2 жыл бұрын
She was truly the best character! At first I thought they were just going to show her briefly to acknowledge the experience of the times (like the nod in the original movie). Then I was worried they were going to have her play on the Peaches, erasing all of that. Not just historically inaccurate, but taking away one of the obstacles that fires her up. Then I thought her story was going to be just this disjointed "othering" of her storyline, running separate from the "main" one. By EP2 I was screaming, "GIVE MAX HER OWN SHOW!" In the end, I love the way they wove the two together, letting Max and Carsen interact where it was believable for the times, and show the two stories in parallel, which just made it all the more jarring and realistic. I still want an Adventures of Max and Clance series, but maybe I'm hoping for way too much!

Having now watched the entire season, what Abbi says at the very end about D'Arcy's delivery of the "I thought so" line at the end of the pilot makes SO much sense! Like I can completely see how the writing for Greta evolved between the pilot and the rest of the series purely based on D'Arcy's delivery of that line, and I'm so glad they were able to account for the actors' takes on the characters in the pilot in the writing for the rest of the season!

An absolute triumph! Abbi and Chanté are fantastic leads and Carden was absolutely *phenomenal* as Greta. I sincerely, sincerely appreciated the balance between showing the very harsh reality of being queer during this era with the joy and victorious moments of finding community despite that. I can't wait for season 2 because there is so much more to tell with these characters! This is a true testament to what excellent media can be made when queer women and women of color are steering the ship behind the scenes and on the screen.

I greatly appreciate the balance of sad realism with the happier moments too. It's difficult to find that, especially with lesbian/gay characters set in the past. It felt like a very respectful portrayal of multiple groups. Told in a way which showed the weight of the prejudice & barriers of the time but also the strength of those affected & the happy moments they were still able to create. The stand out performances for me were D'Arcy Carden as Greta & Gbemisola Ikumelo as Clance. They both felt like fully formed characters with charisma & genuine personality. Wonderful performances I hope to see more of.

This show shines light on so many topics which are often overlooked yet it never feels forced. It is so easy to slip into the perspective of women who had to fight so hard. Excellent series, it takes stories not recognized in the 1992 film and expands the narrative. Based on real events but showing characters that are mixtures of experiences, it provides an emotional representation of LGBT women in the 40's. Bringing different types of relationships, from romantic to friendship, these are funny, interesting and crying episodes at the same time. Created and produced by queer people it's a wonderful series, I'm looking forward to season 2!

I find it very sad nobody is talking about the 1992 film since while I havent seen the movie of the original, this feels like another case of 2016 Ghostbusters in which they didnt even attempt to understand why the original book or film was successful. Some people here are talking about it somewhat, but man without the backup of Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donell or such, even watching the show, this isnt how the 40s acted and the cursing is extemely questionable. Im watching it as we speak but I dont think the film was ever............questionable to say the least. Makes me sad that nobody has seen the 1992 classic as old school fans would say (I dont know why these shows are trying so damn hard to replace the original classic source material when the original film was an instant classic. Its like remaking Back to the Future but it has Justin Bieber and there was not only cursing, but the doc is a teenager girl who Marty wants to have sex with. That shit aint flying and Robert Zummekas would be hellishly pissed if that ever happened). Skipping this like Paper Girls (another bad Amazon show that has the worst ending ever next to Invincible and wont get another season. Great work Amazon Prime you just failed again here). This saddens me.
