Red State and Tusk completely underrated. If he had released them under a pseudonym without that stupid "oh, it's a Kevin Smith movie?" stamp on it, they would've been celebrated (for what they are). Tusk was A24 btw, one more case where Smith was ahead of his time doing weird horror before the genre became a "cinephile" classic.

It’s true, those movies were ahead of the trend and I think that was the reason they didn’t do well. Jersey Girl also happened to be his most hated movie but it’s one of his best technically. I feel like Smith occasionally ventures out and tries to flex his creativity, then the critics wound him and he goes back to making something familiar and safe. He seems more comfortable when expectations are low. I hope he manages to break that cycle eventually, and becomes appreciated for his more creative efforts.

I don’t think people understand what Kevin has done, he mentions the Smodcastle so off handedly; but I grew up and lived my life in Leonardo and Atlantic Highlands New Jersey, and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt, Kevin saved our towns. He rescued the theater from going under, and he bought out the building that the Quick Stop resides in. Kevin Smith is more than just a film maker, he is a story teller telling the story of everyone I know in my home towns, and he’s a hero to all of us for the contributions he’s given us all. Kevin Smith loving those towns meant those towns got to keep the things we all loved about them, and I could never thank him enough for it.

This reminds me of the time my dad tried to bond by going to the movies with me. Just two adult men watching Team America: World Police. When the puppet sex started I leaned over and asked, “Do you want to leave?” He replied, “No, it’s okay. I’ll stick it out.” I asked him after the movie why he didn’t want to leave during the movie and he said “I figured it couldn’t get any worse but I was wrong!” 😂 He didn’t try to bond with me again until years later, when I happened to be hosting a blind watch party for Black Devil Doll. Dude just randomly showed up and asked if he could watch it with us. He walked out after about 40 minutes. My poor old man trying to understand me. To be fair, Black Devil Doll was too gross for me too. It felt like it was just trying to be offensive and cross all the lines just for the sake of it.

8:16 It was one of the joys of my life to meet Kevin on his Clerks 3 roadshow. We had to climb a couple flights of stairs, and then turn a corner. At the top, you were looking at the back side of the photo backdrop. I’ll never forget: I came around the front of the backdrop, and *this* was exactly the look I got from Kevin Smith-one of my heroes. It was so warm and matter-of-fact, like it had been years since he had seen his old friend. (Me!) It was crazy. The fact that he views this look as something he receives, rather than something he gives to others, tells you everything you need to know about the man and his level of gratitude.

I like Kevin Smith’s movies pretty well but he tends to stagnate creatively. Red State and Tusk felt like the biggest fake-out because when those were released, I thought “Finally! He’s in his experimental era and we’re gonna start seeing some really cool stuff from him.” Then he just kind of reverted back to his comfort zone. Reboot entered some new ground and had some great emotional moments, but that was about it. It’s a real shame, he’s clearly a talented filmmaker but he lacks ambition and I think he was hurt too many times by critics who didn’t appreciate his best efforts. I hope the new movie turns out to be good but my expectations are low. If it’s about on par with Reboot I’ll be happy enough.
