What Reeve did better than all the supermen actors to follow him. Is play the nerd in the glasses. Even Cavill’s version of Clark was way too cool and good looking. Lois _does_ know that Superman is the father of her child all along, and she remembers their history; what she doesn't remember is that Clark and Superman are the same person. That's why she's unnerved by Superman's return, but her reaction to Clark coming back is way less emotional. The problem with the kiss in Superman 2 is not that it's a "fake" or "imaginary" power that's just stupid as opposed to much cooler imaginary powers like flying. The problem with the kiss is it's lazy writing. Fantastic worlds and people make for great stories. But they have to be consistent. Pulling "new" powers for superman out of one's ass in order to fix a plot corner, the writer painted themselves into, will always feel "cheap". Writer's can create any world they want. But once they set the rules of the world, consistency is important.

John Doe It's not that there was too much destruction, it was the character of Superman that ruined Mos. Superman is a virtusl Olympian god raised as a man with values of defending those weaker than himself. In Mos, they turned him into a hero who hates being heroic. And as for destruction, Superman fought Did in a populated area and allowed horrendous collateral damage (which is the reason Batman started to see him as a dire threat in BvS) and didn't even try to lead the fight away. The main issues I, and many other comic fans had with Mos is the Superman in that movie was a completely different character to the Big Blue Boy scout we know and love. Perhaps if he changed over time, due to the events in various film's, that would be fine(like he changed over time in the DCAU, and they had an episode where Captain Marvel was used to show how dark Supes had gotten, but it happened organically over Superman TAS and Justice League) but in Mo S he was raised to not get involved and to let people die for no good reason. And don't get me started on the body count left by Bats in BvS again, they don't show how he got so broken as to break his _only_ rule, no killing. People have read and loved these characters for decades, yet with MoS and BvS we get elseworlds interpretations advertised as the real thing.

I still think the '78 Superman is the best Superman film ever made and Superman doesn't throw a punch in that one either. While I enjoyed Man of Steel, Superman's heroics don't hinge on violence the way they do for other superheroes. Superman Returns was a flawed film, but not for the reason Smith gives. The biggest problem with Superman Returns, in my mind, was its reverence to '78 Donner film. See, Richard Donner made a film that was steeped in Superman mythology. He gave us a straight-faced take on Krypton and Jor-El and Lara, on Smallville and Clark's coming of age, the Fortress of Solitude, then Superman's rescues in Metropolis and squaring off with Lex Luthor. Yeah it gets way cheesy, but the point is, Donner dug deep into Superman lore to create an epic Superman film. Singer didn't dig into Superman lore. He dug into the Donner films. Donner showed reverence to the Superman source material. Singer showed reverence to Donner. THAT was the breakdown.

Well, Reeve's Superman never threw a single punch in "Superman the Movie", either. And it still worked perfectly!! His Superman was just more full of joy and confident, had more charisma and a positive outlook...

I know this mostly off topic, but I like Henry Cavill as Superman. I wish we could see him being Superman away from Zack Snyder's horrid directing.
@JakanoryJones8 жыл бұрын
+Pale Horse I'm not so sure it's his directing, it's the writing, whoever that is. I like Snyder's visuals, he's a visonary don't get me wrong. But in both the movies he's done with superman, the writers or whoever don't quite know what to do with superman. Cuz in BvS he just kinda mopes about and then dies and in the first one its y'know an origin story so it's just introducing him. I did like the idea of him killing thought it was an interesting take on the character it was something new, but his guilt for having to kill was never addressed in BvS (that I can remember, correct me if I'm wrong) and the first thing we see superman do is straight up kill a man! Or put him in the ICU anyway. I'm just not sure they know what to do with Superman. Get someone on board who knows about superman like Max landis for example. As controversial as he is, he knows superman and writes good superman stories and he is a screenwriter. Get him in and ask him what's what with superman. But whatever I couldn't make that movie. Like if Zack Snyder came up to me with a time machine, took me back to day 1 of pre-production and said "you fuckin make it then" I'd cry and pee myself. Or maybe I'd make a cool film but probably not.
@PaleHorseShabuShabu8 жыл бұрын
+Jak MP Ha ha, good ending. I do agree that the writing is lacking and inconsistent. It sounds like we disagree on Zack Snyder's directing, and that's fine. I feel like every movie he's directed since 300 are dominated by the same gray, brown, and black coloration and are typically more style over substance.
@JakanoryJones8 жыл бұрын
+Pale Horse oh no that's completely what I was saying haha. style style style. I do kinda dig the visuals though. you can't deny he does cool visuals. but beyond that not much
@PaleHorseShabuShabu8 жыл бұрын

The impression I got the entire movie was that Lois knew 100% that Jason was Superman's son, but she didn't know (yet or for sure) he had super strength. When Lex suspects his parentage and waves the Kryptonite in Jason's face, she is obviously lying when she says that Richard is the father. Even Richard seemingly has his suspicions, at least that they slept with each other, as seen when he asks Lois about the "Night I spent with Superman" article.

Loneliness is not a trait of Superman, and that was my biggest problem with this movie. Superman is so disconnected from people in this film, and yet that isn't who Superman is from the comics and it wasn't Christopher Reeve's Superman. What makes Superman so human is the fact that he comes from a world that was so ahead of us and yet he lives among us as if he's one of us. That's what makes Superman the most human of superheroes. This movie just didn't have that or Reeve's characterization.

thanks. i was refering all my comments towards the original theatrical version. I have never seen that version,but it doesn't make sense to me,, would he not have to go all the way back in time to the point that he pushed the first luthor rocket into space , to prevent it from hitting the phantom zone? He would have to go back to before the 1st time he spun the world to prevent that. Plus how can an earthly rocket shatter a device from krypton,in a yellow sun? Contradicting to say the least.

I liked Superman Returns. I always have, I just thought the good stuff in it was always enough to overshadow the bad, but within the context of seeing Man of Steel I grew a whole new appreciation for it. In terms of tone, the Chris Reeves Superman movies and the Zac Snyder versions are polar opposites with the Reeves movies being incredibly corny and the Snyder film taking itself way too seriously. Yet through these extremes they both hit a very similar problem: Plausibility. The Reeves films were too goofy to be considered close to reality with a bit of dated dialogue as well as outlandish solutions to problems like reversing the earth's rotation. The Snyder film tried to be a little closer to realism, but that illusion was shattered because of Superman's incompetence as a hero lot's of smaller logic gaps like sacrificing your life in a storm for a friggin dog. Point is, the common complaint among fans is that the Reeves films are overly goofy and the Snyder film is overly dark and pretentious. Superman Returns, in my opinion, hit's the perfect balance. It's got the colorful wonder and enchantment you can find in any Superman comic like saving a falling shuttle and being impervious to a gun turret's barrage of bullets, but it also addresses character weakness in Superman FAR better then Man of Steel did. Take for instance the premise: Superman hears that there may very well be remains of Krypton left, and so he goes away for a while to try and find it only to come back empty handed. This leaves him initially depressed because he thought he could finally go back to his routes only to find out he is still terribly alone. But through this realization he remembers that he still has a home amongst the people of earth and that he still has the opportunity to use his incredible powers to do great things. This ties in greatly with his conflict of Kryptonian versus human. Not only that, but it's puts Lois in understandable emotional denial because she just can't believe Superman would up and leave like that. The years without Superman's presence prove uneventful and so she comes to a decision that the world didn't need him. Superman proves her wrong by taking her on a flight and saying "You say the world doesn't need a savior . . but every day I hear someone crying for one". This is great development that the Reeves movies didn't have and the Snyder film failed at executing properly. It shows how Superman's absence hurt Lois even though she tries to deny it and now that he's back she can't help but feel whole again even though she's denying that too. It also proves to be great commentary on the idea of humanity needing a savior (Superman is ALWAYS great commentary for that). The movie is about Superman discovering his place in humanity once more, and it's very satisfying because it's got all the enchantment of the Reeves films but brings to the table a surprising look at Superman the reeves films never really offered.

The Donner Cut was released in the same year as Superman Returns. Bryan Singer didn't use Donner's Superman II cut as a template, because it hadn't been released yet. Singer did indeed use Lester's version. Superman gave up his powers first, then slept with Lois. That makes Singer's choice logical. I'm going to stop ranting now, and assume you did not mean to use the word 'replenished' ;)
