Well the final test is the audience reception and the number of views this will get. It's good that Amazon saw the potential and ordered a second season right off the bat, but if this really plays out as hoped it has to draw in more people than just the critters. There are many of us, but I doubt our views alone could carry this show to success. Not that it was about success at first, when it was conceptualized, but now it kind of turned into this thing were it wants to prove that it can do what everybody outside the D&D community said it couldn't do.

I've read elsewhere that other platforms wanted to change it to open it up to a wider audience (less cursing, gore, ect), perhaps with a PG rating. With the success of the kickstarter the second season was all but assured. Amazon could easily approve a 3rd season and put very little money into it. Yes, it needs more then just CR fans to watch the show but with everything I've seen in the past few weeks, I'm pretty hopeful.

Gotta say "D&D" here includes Pathfinder and other RPG game systems, as much as I am a fan of 5e. The original Critical Role tabletop game was with the rules of Pathfinder 1.0.

Pre-stream though. Starting with c1e1, it was 5e with some mechanics carried over from PF like the Gunslinger class, or Pike being the cleric of Sarenrae, etc.

@@steelangel9039 True. 5e is more accessible and simpler, and super popular (!), so better suited for the live play.

@@Baraz_Red 5e is a much-needed revision of the rules after 4e. Open Gaming License ftw 🙂 That being said, Matt Mercer could run anything as rules-light as FATE Core, or as rules-heavy as GURPS, they just decided to go for what was widespread enough and available at all times in case of giveaways and such. Great business hunch.

Yeah, as a teen gamer in the 80's there was definitely a sort of "secret handshake" for roleplayers. Rule #1 of D&D is that we don't talk about D&D, in public. Rule #2 of D&D is WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT D&D IN PUBLIC! LOL! I think it's awesome that new gamers don't have to worry about that ~ at least not nearly as much. And I feel sorry for all of the people of my generation that didn't play because of the stigma associated with it. To those people I would say: it's ok to game now. What are you waiting for?

I just hope the last season includes the Keyleth goldfish scene.

Having DMd for years… I am impressed by RPGs going mainstream.
