my favourite Al Pacino performance ever of all time is in Dog Day Afternoon. but i am very much in love with him and have been for most of my life so it's difficult not to rattle off a list of others. i do want to point out-- in his defense-- that appearing in that horrendous piece of shit Jack And Jill financed the project where he truly indulged in artistic reckless abandon, his totally gorgeous exploration: Wilde Salome, an experimental documentary of Oscar Wilde's controversial play Salome. I think in some cases it's the pound of flesh he has to give away to get back the freedom to do his passion projects.

I understand that the amount of "loud performances" might feel tedious but like you said, an actor is only as good as the material given. People often overlook the movies where Pacino wasn't set up for loudness. Cruising, Frankie and Johnny, Danny Collins (which you did mention), and a few others. He made those quiet movies before, after or in the same years as the loud movies. There are even quiet scenes in the movies he's criticized for because THOSE scenes were meant to be quiet, not loud. Jack Nicholson, Leo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman and Daniel Day-Lewis have all yelled a ton in their movies, too. Maybe that's just how their scripts and characters were written, they're still great at what they do. If Pacino had more quiet scenes in Godfathers 1 and 2, displayed anger without yelling, someone could easily say that he didn't have to yell in the Godfather 2 clip shown at 2:35 of this video. After he slapped Kay, he could've just walked away quietly instead of yelling, "YOU WON'T TAKE MY CHILDREN!" Also, before hearing about Kay's abortion in Godfather 2, he told her that he has the strength to change. So what happened in Godfather 3? He changed. He's not "the same Michael as before" because of old age and character development. He was also having a diabetic stroke AND just saw his daughter killed in front of him in those Godfather 3 clips in the video. I'm not sure why either of those would be considered overacting. It's easy enough for moviegoers to nitpick but I think that it sometimes comes off as a lazy and unfair observation. This is all just my opinion, though. I do, however, agree with you on Jack And Jill. There will never be a sensible excuse for that piece of, um... Film(?)

Coincidentally my two favorite Pacino portrayals are Lefty in Donnie Brasco and Carlito in Carlitos Way, which both are very quit and not over the top, but I still love his performances in movies such as Heat, the scene where he finds he's nearly dead stepchild is just amazing

Funnily enough I never thought of Pacino in a TV capacity but I’d also point out that his performance in Hunters is a perfect mirror of that trajectory you speak about. That passion and ranting comes out in some episodes, in others there is a subdued intensity that shapes the scene and the characters around him. And he navigates those two ends of the spectrum beautifully in the series- would highly recommend it to everyone
