In the Ruy Lopez, knight maneuvers backward, even to the starting position are common because when the pawn structure changes the optimal placement of the knights change. So you will see the knights going backwards at times. In a more closed position, swift development is not necessarily the priority. It is being optimally prepared for when the position does open up. And the path to the best placement of your knights requires at times going backward.

11:19 and Hikaru whispered in Heemans's ear "Swichen ZOOK". And this is the kind of stuff that derailed my brilliant chess career. Now that I have been active in this channel and I feel a little bit more comfortable I wanted to share one anecdote from my personal life. I was a young and up-and-coming chess prodigy and everyone thought that I had a very bright future, but in one tournament when I was in swishen Zook my GM opponent whispered into my ear *swishen Zook* and my mom who was standing nearby saw that, came and asked the guy "what did you tell my son?" and he said "nothing ma'am it's just a very normal procedure in chess tournaments and ....." But my mom did not believe and never let me play another high level tour. That's what derailed my chess career.

Hans is still young. If he can avoid burnout, he may achieve something. That said, wow, he really is a person who thinks everything is about willpower and the appearance of confidence. He even implied that if he cannot convince himself that he is going to win, then he loses his motivation. Even if that is so, though, too much medicine can kill you too. His mind game of superiority to motivate himself bleeds over into interviews and public comments. And that arrogance has interfered with his ability to get into invitational tournaments and respect.
