In Thailand, alternative routes are sometimes cramped and time consumming, i can understand why this person used the restaurant as a short cut, however, in Thailand the restaurant also becomes the owners home. Walking through the restaurant all the time is like invading one’s home without permission.

All the man had to do every couple of days was buy a drink, be kind to the cashier, be polite, and they likely wouldn’t have had any issue with him using it as a walkway every once in a while. Because “sure, he only passes through for a coffee on his way to work, but he’s nice to the staff and makes people smile, so we don’t mind.” Just be polite to workers and they’ll be nice to you, customer service goes BOTH ways.

Me too but I also would do it to save an hour. Especially as this was the same set up as a mcdonalds. You order from the counter and go sit at any open table. It was a small business but the same kind of vibe, not a get seated and waited on kind of joint. I know if I was eating at a McDonald's and somebody walked in 1 door, across the restaurant and out the other I probably wouldn't even notice. And if I did, it would be more of a "that's kinda odd" vibe than getting upset or anything.

That’s what I did back when I went to a mall that had its theater located in the middle of the building and the entrances were extremely far away. I would cut through the restaurant however, after the movie was over I would always come back to eat there. I imagine the owner would be more than happy to give him an exception if he talked with him and made some arrangement but now, that’s never going to happen.

If you're going to leave a negative review, you better be able to back it up in court. There are degrees to which this can be taken, but the idea that a disgruntled customer that doesn't like the fact that it rained that day can get together with 5 of her friends and leave negative reviews on a half dozen sites should have a mechanism to correct it. One way to do it would be to weigh ratings as a percentage of total customers and not show an aggregate value until a minimum threshold number of reviews has been submitted. That way no individual can make a significant impact on a company's overall rating

There was an American in Koh Chang that got himself in hot water & actually jailed (Wesley Barnes). Trip advisor actualy ended up paying the guys legal fees and put a warning on the relevant page.

The difference of through the restaurant vs around in this case is an extra 20 minutes walk. It's not just around the building, the restaurant is the only cuthrough for the whole block. And he needs to make this trip at least twice a day so minimum 1 hour (twice out twice back) time savings by cutting through.

Defamation is a crime there and in this case, the restaurant would have suffered financial and reputational losses, too. Presumably, the fake reviews referred to the owner or members of staff.

I used to do these. There was a shop with back and front entry which used to save me 5 mins of walking. So whenever i enter the shop from back I used to buy a small cream biscuit pack pay it at the counter and walk out from the front door.

Not only would that be easy to find + delete, you'd have to prove that a bunch of 1 star reviews in a short time frame truly harmed your business. He was arrested for "entering false computer data likely to cause damage to the general public." Interesting wording as that would also consider fake positive reviews the same. Different country, different laws though. If you want to be strict about it, so many people could be arrested due to that.
