Re; Story #3 - Polygraph tests are not capable of telling if you're being truthful. They measure stress. A very stressed individual can very easily fail a polygraph test. There is a reason they're not admissible as evidence in various courts of law. People who have committed crimes but have no guilt about it can easily pass polygraph tests. It's very likely that she's being honest and she should absolutely leave that guy.

My thought exactly. Zero consideration AND terrible parenting. Why schedule appointments before making sure you would be able to get there? Rude to the appointment office, rude to who you ask for a ride with no time given, and rude to the kids who keep getting jerked around. It's all just very inconsiderate and stupid.

Now that i think about it, i've had to deal with a Karen at a Parking lot at a Supermarket. I was just at our Car, grabbing something i forgot there. The door was Open for like 5 Seconds and suddenly someone honked at me because i was Blocking the parking lot beside us. I told her that i'm only getting something out of the Car. She looked annoyed at me and said something. Then my Mom called me over, to get into the Store. She dealt with the Karen in the meantime and shut her quiet after a Short time. (The woman from the youth welfare office didn't call her a hyena for nothing.) A Coworker from my Job was also nearby and called that Karen crazy.

To the OP in Story Number 3: *12:51* If your boyfriend is saying that you’re cheating on him and that he wants you to take a Polygraph Test, that’s what I called: Jumping To Conclusions. No one should jump to conclusions about something, without getting some details. If you failed miserably on the test, that’s a sign for you to leave him. Get out while you can or you’ll regret it.

Story 3: Yeah she needs to get out of this relationship asap. In the best case, she'll be lucky and her boyfriend will dump her, that being if he's just paranoid and has insane trust issues. What I fear, however, is he may be extremely manipulative. I mean, polygraph mesure stress, and of course she'll be stressed while taking a polygraph for that reason. Guilt is a great lever, if not the best, to manipulate people. I mean, it's a win-win situation for a manipulative boyfriend: best, and most likely case, she fails and now he can guilt her for "cheating", worst case she pass and he can guilt her for making him so suspicious he had to go and have her take a polygraph test to be sure.

if you *are* cheating + understand polygraphs, you would know that if you didn’t show stress, you would get away. knowing that you would get away, you wouldn’t get stressed. the point is don’t rely on polygraphs.

I used to work with a girl my age a couple years ago. Last year, we got talking and I found out she didn't have a driver's license or a car. I attended a birthday party she had at a local bowling alley and even helped her out with a little money to pay for the party. Over the course of a year, I'm constantly giving her rides to all these doctor's appointments because she's dealing with pain from different things as well as other medical conditions (she's heavy set, so I had to assume it played a part). I would often sit with her for HOURS in waiting rooms and inside the ER, sometimes even staying overnight and getting next to no sleep. I had to go to work like this once or twice, while being late due to being discharged really late in the morning and having to drive her about 15-20 minutes down past where I lived and worked. The one hospital we often went to was about an hour away, so having to drive about 20 minutes to go pick her up and then an hour and some change in the other direction was getting on my nerves. I drive an older Taurus with a V6, so I really felt my wallet getting lighter each time I helped her. Did I mention she never really wore her seatbelt? She has a niece who came with us somewhere once and she didn't wear her seatbelt either, so I guess it's just something they teach their kids not to do. They seem to think the driver won't get a ticket for it... Anyway, I eventually cut things off. I politely told her one day I was dealing with some family related issues (I wasn't, just didn't want to take her somewhere) and she was just like "whatever". I helped this girl with buying an iPhone 13 and a smart watch (spent $430) and hundreds more on gas. I was done with the ungratefulness, so I blocked her.

with story 3 not only was it really manipulative of him to make her take a polygraph, the fact that he made her pay for it makes it so much worse. On story number one. I have that neighbor only it's the male who always asks for a ride. He has lost several friends because he thinks everyone owes him. He even bitches that people stop answering their phone to him because they don't want to give him a ride. I answer to him occasionally but only when I have something to do and can't give him a ride. The topper, and the reason I stopped giving him rides at all is that he's too lazy to work so he collects scrap metal and when he finds someone with a pickup he wants them to load his metal, drive him 25 miles to the scrap yard and then unload the metal. When he burned all the people who were taking him, he asked me to load rusty steel bars in my trunk and back seat and take him, in my brand new car. He claims he hurt his back and can't even walk without a cane and yet I constantly see him walking down the street holding the cane horizontally and walking just fine. He and his wife drink a case of beer every day. If you can afford that, you can afford a car.

When we were building our house we had a neighbor who lived not far from us and also works where my wife does. The neighbor had an accident and her car was totaled. At first she would ask my wife for a ride even on days my wife wasn’t working. (My wife is a RN , works 12 hour shifts 3 days a week), whereas the neighbor works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Then the neighbor started asking my wife to take her to get groceries. I asked the lady when she was going to get another car. She told me that she was too afraid to drive again. After our house was finished being built, we naturally moved (40 minutes away). In the beginning I had told my wife that the neighbor was only wanting a taxi without payment. Sure enough after we got moved she got mad bc she lost her free transportation. After she burned everyone else out, she bought a new car and started driving herself again. She never talked to my wife after she told the neighbor that she could no longer drive for her

Story 1: I'm a legally blind individual, therefore I don't and can't drive. I /hate/ asking for rides anywhere. I have family that takes me to appointments, but for the most part, I try to work things out that I can walk everywhere I need to go. I'm fortunate that everything I might need is within walking distance (and it's probably good since I need to lose some weight and the walking does help with that) but the unmitigated gall of people like this is a large part of why I hate asking people for rides as I tend to be looked at like that mooch artist.
@mariamucaria.flutes
@mariamucaria.flutes 2 жыл бұрын
Same!!! I too am ineligible to drive a car because I too am legally blund. I use public transit and ride share services (where I have been discriminated again for using a guide dog). My annoyance with the narrator immediately thought everyone needs to “get their life together” which means everyone needs to drive if they need to travel so much. Well narrator, consider that not everyone can drive or should. Maybe they have a medical reason or their license was revoked for good reasons. To assume all of us need to drive is damaging and makes it harder on those who don’t or can’t drive especially people like the antagonist of the story. Personally, I detest asking for a ride to different places. It is just something to be careful spouting off like you did. The OP in the story did the right thing by cutting off the antagonist. But to make it seem that everyone doing this is a bad or unreliable person was not appropriate! This is why good public transit options need to be everywhere! Ride shares aside (since they aren’t always available, reliable and at times are dangerous).

Polygraph test do not detect lies they detect stress. If you are overweight or anything like that than those should be taking in consideration with baselining you. All that said if he's worried about you cheating he's probably the one cheating.
@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd

Story 3: So I can understand why the Bf would think to use a polygraph test. In a perfect world unless someone is lying they should not be stressed, thus, it is the perfect tool to test for cheating. That said, the Bf is not the brightest. First, polygraph tests measure stress. Stress itself can be either fear of being caught (which he was hoping it would give him), annoyance, or pretty much any of the many things that can quicken heart rate. I also think that if he does not have trust in the OP it is just easier to break up with her. What is going to happen? Like, assume it worked. Okay, she got caught cheating, she will probably leave now since she cannot go behind his back. It just has no logical basis. So yeah OP needs to get out because it's clear to me the Bf does not even think things through which is just dangerous in general.

Story 3: I've taken a polygraph before, and they don't say "truth" or "lie". They take a baseline reading and when they ask you questions, measure the difference in stress levels, and abnormal reactions. Nervousness has nothing to do with it. But it is up to the test administrator to determine if you are truthful or not.

Actually it does. The things polygraphs measure to determine if you're lying are all things that can occur if you're nervous, scared or stressed such as increased heart rate, breathing and sweat. Someone can fail a polygraph if they're hooked up to one while doing intense cardio. These are often signs of lying too btw but a person can also pass even if they are guilty purely by being calm.

@@tanandalynch9441 The machines detect irregularities and the administrator looks for subconscious tendencies that happen when you lie. They ask you baseline questions, with only yes or no responses so there isn't any room to misinterpret the question. If you are nervous during your exam and have the common symptoms of such, it won't affect your test as much, as long as your behavior is consistent. If you suddenly start sweating, or start suddenly taking deep, slow breaths that is something that will get noticed. Someone would most likely fail if their baseline questions are taken while resting, but then their actual questions are taken with cardio. Calm isn't the only factor, there are subtle reactions your body has to you lying whether you are trying to hide them or not. Simply "being calm" won't fool a polygraph.

A polygraph test doesn’t really tell if a person is lying or not Most people are high strung and nervous by nature and they have rapid heart beat the polygraph test is design to measure heart beat so if you are nervous by nature that test would pick up on that and a rapid heart beat so the test would saying you are lying and the person would be like NO I’m not

RE: first story. Man I can relate to that and I to had enough. It started with my friend asking for a ride up to the sports complex In the western part of town. She even call me on my work phone. Of course I would give her a ride, but when she started calling yet never coming out on time, she cannot really tell time (she has a handicap and lives In a protected apartment) despite I'm sending her a message when i'm off at work and will be there In 5. I ended up waiting for nothing for 15 minutes before saying enough. Trying to get a hold of her Is impossible. In my case she calls the company cell that I carry In the afternoon. She also joins the regulars in the sauna and tries getting a ride from them. When i told about my experiences then people said: she Is a good person but appears to be a bit too lazy for the 1 km walk. In regards to her calling the company cell when I have requested that she send me a message. I took It up with the colleague who have answered calls (I work In a supermarket so Its push a number for this department or wait for the first available), she said: I completely understand your request. If she calls again i will tell her to text/send a message (facebook messenger). I havent recieved Ill glares or bad judgement comments. However making me wait and not coming on time when i try to send a message that makes me pissed. I have places to be and lifting weights during the "peak hours" Is a tidious task when you have to wait for half your excersises for equipment to be available. Am I a jerk or has she exploited me to a certain limit?

Polygraph tests are not very accurate at all. There are so many things that can lead to false positives or false negatives on a polygraph test. That's why they aren't admissable as evidence in court. Even if he had reason to suspect she was cheating on him, a polygraph test would be such an unreliable way to find out and could easily make her seem guilty even if she is not. If he really wanted to make sure she wasn't, I can think of so many better ways to go about it. That was stupid on his part to try and make her and stupid on her part to agree to it.

For determining truth, a polygraph is a very expensive, uncomfortable coin flip. They're about as reliable. But for getting that OP to come to reddit where they could be pulled back into reality and reason from this odd bubble where they have been socially isolated and likely emotionally abused, that particular polygraph was worth every penny.

OP you think your neighbor is treating you like a taxi driver?! Taxi drivers get paid and only have to work while on duty! She was treating you far worse.

Story 3 op's boyfriend is probably cheating himself and is projecting, as cheaters often do. I've seen it in my own life and have heard about it happening in the lives of many others. In my own experience, every single person that ever cheated on me also accused me of cheating even as I stayed at home 24/7 and lost all friends, and every person that never cheated on me also never accused me. It is what it is.

Story 3: to be honest, it could be either fixed, or her being overly stressful, and I assume the BF is trying to hide his own affair by doing this and when she's done, he can be with the affair partner, OP, Get out of there
