I once has a Karen confront me about my son wearing ‘headphones’ on the bus and she could hear the music blaring and started banging on about how parents like me are the reason these teenagers are so disrespectful listening to loud music in a public space disturbing other people….my son is autistic and was wearing ear defenders to keep noise out with absolutely no sound coming out of them. I think about that almost everyday

@Sheila Addy: Just infuriating and what can you do when you’re a good human being? You really need a soft-spoken polite reply that will destroy the “Karen” verbally. As the parent of a handicapped daughter I’ve been looking for one my whole life! I hope you can let this go, thinking about it constantly only hurts you….the old saying about drinking poison and hoping the other person dies! Stay well and remember, you are a great mother!

I was once on a train with a friend and another passenger from two rows away came over and asked my friend to turn down her headphones… I was reading my book beside my friend (totally undisturbed by the tiny sound from her headphones). My friend apologised and turned off her headphones but we were both so shocked that the woman had thought it was reasonable to interrupt our peace. In the end we chatted and laughed for the next hour of the journey so I would imagine the woman found that much more annoying than the tiny sound escaping the headphones.

I'm from Portland and am sad that this Karen lives within, probably, the same city district as I do. I'm sure she was never an attorney, however, if she somehow was, she was probably disbarred within a year or two of practice and or does some crazy, drama filled field of law like family law. (My parents are both lawyers, I get to hear all about other attorneys that they think are incompetent)

I was at a Victoria Secrets semi-annual bra sale (you know those can be a madhouse). This woman, and her awful 10 year old daughter, were annoying everyone. The daughter was pulling things off the rack and dropping them on the floor. She would climb on the displays, even after the employees told her to stop. Her mom, did nothing but stood there. While in line, my daughter, who was 2 years old and in her stroller, was getting tired. I was next in line and my hands were full of merchandise. I told her I will pick her up once outside. That calmed her down. The Karen said, smugly, "Isn't it funny how you need a license to drive a car but not to have children! Just pick her up!" Before I could say anything, all the women around me went off on her about how she's the last person to tell anyone about good parenting. It was hilarious to watch all these women, including the teen girls, tell her what a horrible mother she was. Pure entertainment! After I walked out of the store into the mall, I sat on the bench to put the bag under the stroller. The Karen walked up to me and started saying it was all my fault...blah blah. Once again, some of the other women walked out and tore into her again. Man, I wish I had recorded it! The next occurrence was a few years later. A woman was bottle feeding her newborn on a bench at the mall. This Karen started berating her for not breast feeding. She was calling her a neglectful mom and selfish. After a couple of minutes of nonstop yelling, the mother said, "I can't breastfeed. I have inverted nipples." The Karen said nothing and started to walk away. Bad move! All of the women who overheard her yelling tore into her. One woman said, "You just made her have to say something that's embarrassing for her because you are a nosy b**ch!" None of the women would let Karen get a word in edge wise. The poor mother kept saying she was sorry, but we told her she did nothing wrong. Some of the women invited her to lunch, and she went with them. Moral of the story: stay out of other people's business! 🙂

Last year I had a COVID Karen following me around the mall while I was doing some shopping because I yelled at her to put her damn mask on if she wanted to come into the shops that literally had on their storefronts the notice to deny service to people who refused to wear a mask. She tried to spit on me when I went into the pharmacy and told her that they provide free COVID shots to drop ins and she should take up the offer and get in line. She was harassing a store employee who was documenting the amount of people coming in and out of the store. If she had said to this employee that she forgot her mask at home but needed to do her shopping, she would have been given one. But she was an antimasker ranting about her rights.

I like telling them “it’s not like I’m in a hurry or have a hot date”. Then I chat up the cashier by finding something to compliment them for or if they apologize for stuff that isn’t their fault I just say go with “it’s okay, I used to work retail (true)” and chat them up more! With smiles even. And I make sure that as I go to leave I make eye contact with the complainer and use my best Grinch smile.
@anondecepticon
@anondecepticon 2 жыл бұрын
A brief pause and stare followed by a mildly nonplussed “okay,” is my preferred method of dealing with Karens, rude people, and grown-ass adults behaving like children. It’s more effective than arguing because it gives them nothing to work with - technically you’re agreeing with them - but also silently communicates _You’re embarrassing yourself. I don’t know how to respond without calling attention to it and embarrassing you further, so I’m just going to agree and pretend it didn’t happen._ In other words, respond like they just did the verbal equivalent of farting in public. The social pressure makes them think twice about causing a scene. ETA: If you’re working in retail or customer service and _have_ to engage, I don’t recommend this approach because it may earn you a reprimand for being disrespectful or some other bullshit CYA corporate response. In those situations I find it better to express sympathy and put the blame on the company/corporate/people higher up the food chain while maintaining there’s nothing you can do. “I know, we’re really backed up but they won’t hire more people,” “It’s so stupid, masks don’t even work but they make us wear them,” etc. Basically the “Don’t blame me, I’m on your side,” approach. It doesn’t work in every situation, but it can shift a frustrating attack on you for doing your job to sympathy for being subject to The Man.

As a former goody-two-shoes with anxiety and perfectionist tendencies, I do feel many of the same initial impulses that lead Karens to act the way they do. Aww, the little boy at the pool saying "let's go home" makes my heart hurt. what could possess a person to want to harass a child's mother while they are having fun until the child does not even want to be there anymore? Until the child can no longer have fun at the pool cause mommy is stressed and the man is yelling at her and him. Honestly, if I were a mother, idk HOW I would react, but it wouldn't have gone well. This mother's self-control while getting yelled at by this old man about what kind of mother she is is phenomenal and I seriously respect that for the sake of her kid.

Yeah, my heart broke there. I once had a Karen talk really rudely to me, because we retrieved my sons ball that had fallen on a part of the lawn that wasn't open to walking on it in a public park. I apologised and explained, and then that bitch bent down and told my son he killed some ants by walking on that grass. The lawn that was getting neatly clipped by a tractor-style mower. I nearly lost it right there, but my son nearly cried, so I picked him up and told her I already apologised. She then told us not to do this again, or we would be banned. My son is afraid of going back there since then, which is a shame, because its a beautiful place. I usually teach my son to be polite and respectful of authority, but in this case I told him she was a mean woman, who can't ban us from anywhere, how would she remember our faces. Bitch.

I had an experience where I got yelled at by a guy at the flea market for picking up a guitar and then putting it back on the table, but it fell off the table, he accused me of throwing it on the table and tried to get my mom to pay for it and let's just say Mama bear claws came out. I was so upset, I started crying. I legitimately felt horrible. She was my witness, I didn't throw it, I was standing there trying to apologize because when it fell, it hit the ground and ended up getting scuffed and the guy jerked it out of my hands when I was trying to pick it up and put it back.

the worst part is I know exactly where that event took place. Its in an old folks community in So Cal, my grandparents live there. Hundreds of familys with little children go to that poop every day while visiting their family that live within the community. There are zero rules about diving or jumping into the pool. The only rules for the pool are no running close to the edge and no hanging on the rope that divides the shallow and deep ends. That man probably does this on a regular basis to families there, and that makes me so sad.

I have a black refrigerator, but it quit working." I said,"correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't your ancestors force black slaves to do their work because they were either too lazy or didn't know how to do it themselves?" A friend of mine I knew for a long time was doing a joke about cancer, I laughed and one the people in the group said she was very offended and said it was not funny to joke about peoples with cancer. They were a HUGE blank and I said "but I found that funny and I have cancer". She started to argue that it could not be the case for everyone. And I had to explained to her, that most people at the hospital joke about everythings because we want to feel normal. Included us in the joke it's the best you can do. Also my friend was talking TO ME and she was not in the conversation (and talking to someone else), the world is not a safe place for your feeling. I understand being trigger by thing, but it's her problem. And the people who are offended are ALWAYS the persons without the things in question.

I feel like many people cannot see the difference between a well-meant joke and a malicious joke, and just get offended or defensive for 'someone else's sake'. Although, there are definitely some people who might get hurt by jokes about death and serious diseases like this. But I would say it is not the patient themselves (as you said, it's kind of the opposite, we need to make light of a difficult situation, right?), but the people who are close to someone who is dying or has recently died.

I am disabled, and it annoys me when people get offended on my behalf, without even asking my opinion. Jokes about disability don’t offend me. Using incorrect words does not offend me. For example: in the USA, the word handicapped is in common usage, while here in the UK it is considered a slur. But I am not offended when Americans say handicapped. The rule of thumb is, that a person can say whatever words or jokes they like, as long as they do not mean me intentional harm. For example: if I am in my wheelchair, and someone asks me to “walk this way”, that is not offensive. So I can’t walk, big deal. If I am actually offended by something, I can be all offended by myself, I don’t need someone to do it for me. Obviously, it is different if someone is intentionally verbally assaulting me, in a case like that, assistance is very welcome. Bottom line: Intent is what matters, not the words used. When people become offended on my behalf, it takes away my freedom to be myself, and is much more of a hindrance and annoyance to me, than someone who is not PC. Treat me like a human being, not someone who can’t make their own decisions. That is just insulting. Consider being supportive rather than offended.

I don't agree with you. There is something called context that makes a huge difference. I will never tell a sensitive joke (related to serious sickness, religion, race, sexism, etc.), when there is someone I don't know well present (it seems that the offended person is no acquaintance to you). My friends know me enough to know when I'm malicious and when not and how I think about serious sickness, discrimination, etc., but I'm aware that not everybody know me enough to make that distinction. It is in poor taste to tell this type of jokes to people you don't know well. Another thing is that everybody experiences traumatic events of their lives (cancer, death, discrimination) in different ways. I have to say I'm happy that you can joke about that, but not everybody is like you. If everybody jokes in the hospital, you should probably keep those jokes for the hospital and for close friends and relatives. We are always communicating ourselves in these echo chambers called social media, where everybody things the same way, but the truth is that in the real world perceptions and experiences over the same events may vary depending on the person. Let me be clear that I don't think that you are mean or a bad person. I simply don't agree with you and I'm definitely happy that you can joke about your sickness. I really hope that if you still have cancer, you are getting better soon and if you have already overcome cancer, I would like to congratulate you and send you my best wishes to stay healthy and cancer free.

Good example is this one time a girl in Walmart was being mistreated for wearing a hijab by some other Karen for no reason whatsoever. My Mum ran up to her and reversed Karened her, got the manager involved and got the karen removed from the store. Afterwords my mum goes back to being her normal self and telks the girl her hijab was beautiful and that it made her look beautiful (and it did. I happened to look out the back window at one point a couple hours later, to see a police car in the alley and a cop talking to the kid. (One call was because we hadn't mown our lawn in two weeks - because we were away on vacation. She can't see our yard without going to our neighbors to look over the fence. The city guy came the same day we came home and was not happy about being there.) Sadly, the only thing that got her off our back was casually letting her know that we had home videos with her dog in the background on the loose crapping on her neighbors lawn, and loudly noticing that she didn't have a legally required gate latch for a backyard with a pond in it. It helped us, but not anyone else. It felt gross to have to fight Karen with Karen.

But then she started running her mouth, yelling, saying how the only person who would help her would be white, and all kinds of racial slurs. And I, as a white woman, ignored her and opened up my work. She kept going for like 5 more minutes, before I finally went outside to yell at her to shut up because she was making all of us look bad, and I somehow didn't expect her to get louder? But she did. Finally, this nice man pulled over, got her to calm down, helped her with her car, and wished her a good day. Again, she started screaming at people walking by and saying that she was right, and only a white person helped her, but then guy, with a smile, responded "Actually, I'm half Hispanic and half Japanese. But have a wonderful day, ma'am." And I thought it was so funny when she stfu and drove away without another word.

Neighbours in the farmhouse across the field called in a report to police saying that they heard gunshots and were worried that hunters were in the woods outside of hunting season. When they realised it was just me in the yard practicing with my new snare drum, they apologized. Didn't become Karens whatsoever. Our other drummer doesn't have nice neighbours at all. When you remember all those times your dads ex wife embarrassed us as kids by yelling at random people for things like “charging a late fee for returning a movie late to block buster” like she seriously was screaming at the man. Then you realize your stepmom was a Karen (haven’t seen her in 15 years so hopefully she’s lightened up) Lol I have lots of story’s , one timed she yelled at my little brother for not helping her carry out something to the car right as he offered to help her carry something out to the car. Bro- “do you want help carrying that” “DUH I want help carrying this , seriously take it” as she shoves it into his arms. He was 6 years old and it was a semi large box, he was just trying to be a sweet and helpful little guy. I was so angry I wanted to yell but I was 11 and terrified of her. Or the time she screamed at my BFF on the way to school “ So what are your grades ??? How shitty are you doing in school” In a angry condescending voice. And continue to yell at her about grades when actually my BFF had practically straight A’s and tried mentioning it but kept getting cut off “ I don’t want to hear excuses” Because she was yelling me about my Cs in a couple subjects she decides to attack my friend that she knows absolutely nothing about and honestly has no right to yell at a teen that is not hers. That was the day I moved out. Just the tip of the iceberg. It was embarrassing , my poor friend was terrified. Another sad story is When she found out her perfect straight A honors daughter was pregnant at 17. Picture this ….were in middle of California adventure, and my step sis avoiding roller coasters because you know… eventually my step mom was fed up SM- “ what your too cool for rides now” and of course not the time she wanted to tell her but she responds “no mom I’m pregnant “ SM- Screams “ your ruining your life because you couldn’t keep you Effin legs closed” (in the middle of the food court area while we’re in line to get lunch)SM- “you seriously just couldn’t wait to be a sl*t” (my step sister was a perfect child never did any wrong , just started seeing a guy and yea made a mistake, but already terrified and emotional to have a baby) then continued to use to yell foul , shaming words to her for 15 min … still in the food line. Poor sis was crying . Me my brother and my dad just standing there uncomfortable as everyone stares. Finally they went up to hotel room to talk. It was a whole scene. I understand it’s upsetting to find out your teen daughter is pregnant, but to scream the meaniest nastiest things to her in the middle of a theme park….. is just sad. Like it was really sad , I haven’t seen mean girls say that cruel of stuff to a girl before.

I think SOME of them have been brow beaten into being proper and mannerly and the fact that they worked so hard at things that don’t matter in reality as much as they thought, and they snap. Like they missed out on power trying to be a perfect xyz , and being a perfectly XYZ means nothing. That like wasted their lives almost. So by the time they are middle aged or older the reality sets in and they freaking snap. My own Karen moment was when a guy pushed a ref and got his way. He insisted it was a bad call and got in the unos face and pushed him a teeny bit and the ref relented. I coached the other team and had been taught my whole life not to make a peep and be kind and mannerly and respectful and things turn out in the end, and in reality that it’s actually seen as weak to be soft spoken and kind and polite and agreeable. That sweet manners thing is all a lie. So I snapped and started heckling the other coach . I would usually never do that, but it just hit me all the things I missed out on for me and my team and even promotions and my opportunities by trying to be so nice and polite respectful when that’s really NOT the way to get ahead and my life was basically a lie. I was actually Karen-esque for a while until I found the happy medium and now I’m in the middle Like most people . But I think that’s what’s going on with some of these older ladies. How we were raised was a lie . No one cares what we tried to do and what we thought was right when isn’t really how the world works. So they go overboard a b it with their anger about that and take it out on people. It’s not fair for the people they take it out on at all, it’s something they need to fix, but I really feel that’s what’s going on for some of the nitpicky older ones.

Tbh, I’m realizing the appropriate way to deal with a Karen/Kevin is the same way you deal with a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. State your boundaries of what’s acceptable and what isn’t, state the consequences if those boundaries aren’t respected, then follow through-often with total disengagement. “I understand you don’t want my kid to jump in the pool/have water run down the road/have my feet on the bench/not wear a mask. However, I have the right to use the pool/wash car/sit how I please/refuse service. You may accept that or move on. Perhaps I would consider compromise if you could engage with me respectfully-but I am no longer willing to carry on this conversation with you if you continue to behave in such a way.” End all interaction. Pretty sad when grown adults function at a level equal too or worse than an 18 month old baby.

I realized no one can here me out here, so I started watching videos on how to improve one's voice, and started pushing my limits. I'm sure I still don't sing well, but I sing a lot better than I used to! I've practiced some funny folk songs, that way when I hit a blue note I can claim it's "comedy". My aunt, who's gone now since she was born 105 years ago, taught me a funny song her mother taught her. Her mother died in 1932. Maybe I'll get the nerve to make a video of me singing it to my dog, since the song is so old, it's public domain now. Also, my son found my old clarinet from grade school, 50 years ago. My grandmother was a Karen. Literally, her name was Karen. She was not a "Karen" Karen. She had the philosophy of live and let live. If she did not like something she would let you know, but she was really easy to get along with.

As an Aussie living overseas - hearing that accent brings me a ridiculous amount of joy. Especially in such a dumb situation. Reminded of 'Kath and Kim', which is a great show people should watch

I LOVE Kath and Kim. When Americans tried to reproduce it, that was painful, but the Australian original is hysterical. I, myself, am an American, but I lived in Australia and I brought my Australian husband back with me. He still has the accent, so I'm good. :D

There’s a great moment in Dr. Strange where Ancient Mai tells Strange, “it’s not about you.” People need to internalize that sh!t.
