The Salt Lake Vocal Artists perform the premiere of "Entreat me not to leave you" by Dan Forrest live in concert on July 26, 2011 in Libby Gardner concert hall, under the direction of Dr. Brady Allred. This was the Vocal Artists Bon Voyage concert prior to their Argentine tour and performance at the 9th International World Choral Symposium. "Entreat me not to leave you" was comissioned by and dedicated to the Salt Lake Vocal Artists and Brady Allred.
Entreat me not to leave you
Text adapted from (KJV) Ruth 1: 16-17
16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

My choir did this. It was breathtaking. I'm a soprano 1, and it made all of us cry. If you do this right, you will be emotionally exhausted after delivering the power in this song. It's heart wrenching, the gorgeous story, I believe from the story of Ruth in the Bible. Her whole family dies, and you put yourself through that in this song. Even in my high school choir, we're all 16, 17, 18, and we were crying.

Dan Forrest - 'Requiem For The Living' A beautiful piece written in 2014 I believe. A mass choir will be performing in Paris for 75th anniversary of D-Day. Dan Forrest is young and one of my favorite composers. We will be singing two of his anthems for Easter Service as well.

Wonderful singing... it sounds a lot like many other pieces this choir have sung before such as by Eric Whitacre with those (dare I say over used?) close harmonies, dramatic pauses etc.

The basic term for it is "dissonance"; in both cuts you refer to, the first and second sopranos are a minor second apart, the closest interval possible in Western 12-tone theory. In terms of where you've heard it before in similar context, Eric Whitacre's famous for using these kinds of "agonized", dissonant chords, as a more powerful alternative to the basic suspension/resolution pattern common since the Renaissance. He wasn't the first to discover it, but works like "Water Night", "When David Heard" and "Lux Aurumque" have popularized dissonant chord construction in choral music, and a lot of composers are throwing a few extra notes into chords to create "clusters" with dissonant qualities ranging from shimmery to jarring. In the sacred realm, I've heard the technique in recent works by maybe half a dozen composers.

yeah, this is very whitacre-esque and whitacre is overused... but as a choir director.. nothing unlocks the potential of a group like a whitacre piece. that being said, whitacre music is shamelessly overused.
@patrickbeck8055
@patrickbeck8055 5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Jordan Brown there’s a reason Whitacre’s style is “overused.” That is the trademark style of modern music. And it never fails to send chills down my spine. So yeah it’s everywhere nowadays but that’s ok because it elevates choral music to a new level
