I tuned an upright piano with the Entropy-Piano-Tuner (in 2 days :)) which was disregarded since years, beacuse it was 1-1,5 note out of tune, down. The owner is now VERY pleased... and i am fascinated. Dear Entropy-Piano-Tuner Team, thank YOU for this useful tool! One should keep in mind, that if a note is more than half note out of tune, than the quality indicator wont work. Before tuning these notes, one should tune them roughly into range, than record the note again with inhamonicity detected (=>quality~good), than calculate, than "fine"-tune.

I just recently acquired a tuning hammer to take care of a "sour octave" (which I did by ear) and then I stumbled upon this great App and gave it a try (only on lower 1/3 of my Petrof baby grand. WOW - what an awesome improvement it made in the sound of my piano - I wish I had recorded a "before and after", but the bass really sings beautifully now (although it had drifted rather sharp in bass register due to humidity, so this was a pretty easy test!). I tuned my rhodes piano last weekend with this program. I was skeptical at first and every single note was registering as low quality. I had a USB condenser plugged in with the right level and gain set. This program just is not designed for those types of sine waves i guess. despite this I continued through and every note recorded first try no problem. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to configure 73 keys E to E. Tuning was straightforward and only took a few minutes to get the hang of. Even though i had little confidence following through, the result was a perfect tuning and the best tuning ive ever done. In the past I have tried tuning my Acoustic piano a few times with mixed results, but eventually got frustrated and hired a professional. Ive tried tuning my rhodes a few times before, with sligthly better results than acoustic tuning but still not perfect. With this program Im going to try my acoustic next.

@NathansHVAC7 жыл бұрын
Use a long mute strip and stuff it between all the outer strings. Make the entire piano single string on all the keys. Then run the software and just tune the center strings. The harmonics and partials are based on the string length. After the piano is perfectly tuned with the software, go back and tune all the outer strings one at a time by removing the beats. No need for software. Get the beats to less than 1 per second.

I cant say thank you enough. I have a Samick Baby Grand 5'9" that I play all the time. Sadly I have only "HAD" (not by me) it tuned once every year to 11/2 years. Which is way to long for me. It sounded terrible but I was tired of paying the $125 every time I had someone tune it. So I read everything I could to learn, and everything I could about tuning a piano. From pulling it (which I didnt need to do), to temperament, to partials, and so much more that I know have a deep respect for tuners that I didnt have. So before I actually learned how to tune I tried to tune everything to a 440 temperament and all the frequencies. Well you know how that sounded! In tune when playing one key but terrible as you would know playing a run or any other combination of keys. That is when I knew there was soooo much more. I was about to give up and call the tuner. After studying all about tuning, I found your program and loaded it into my phone and tried to tune that, of course as you say its for testing only on a phone. So I bought the Scarlet 2i2 Studio set $249(Condenser Mic., headphones and everything to hook it up to my computer) and plugged it into my Mac and that made all the difference. My piano sounds beautiful. This was my first piano tuning that I did right and I just wanted to thank you soooo much for this program. I can now tune my piano ANYTIME I want, without paying $500 a year for tuning. Yeah the Mic was $249 and about $100 in tuning materials but I wont have to pay another tuner again!! You should be compensated for this program. It works great!

This program has some powerful features. I am especially impressed with the spectrum tuning display which shows you what all 10 partials are doing at the same time. If this program actually produced an even, decent sounding tuning (which it does not in my experience), one with a smooth tuning curve, rather than one that sounds uneven especially in the bass and across the break, and generally sounds (and looks) amateurish, it could potentially compete with professional tuning software and hardware packages that cost up to a thousand dollars or more. I would also question why it is necessary to sample all 88 notes when other hardware and software products (again, professional and usually costing a lot of money) take representative samples from different regions of the keyboard and successfully extrapolate a good tuning for the whole piano. This is very time consuming, and when it is one's livelihood time is money.
@lindafuria28897 жыл бұрын
yes, this software does has some amazing features, by sampling every note it is possible to get a good interactive tuning rather than the other ETD's, which only samples a few notes. Of course at this early stage, Entropy isn't meant for the piano technician tuning to make a living-maybe in the not so distant future hopefully it will fast enough to do quicker tunings...
@IsaacOLEG9 жыл бұрын
thanks for providing that interesting software. if the piano playing in the background is tuned with your software, the tuning (sound in tune indeed) have some sort of much articulated tone, a little as what is obtained with Dirk tuner, a may be similar program (too compact may be, in mediums, while articulation and clarity of tone is sort of proof of the success of computation, I think). (also possibly the human ear wish to hear some stretching, hence the good results with some options as 12th 15th balance) I have trouble defining where the difference is if compared with human tuning, I like to put a finger on that, as tuners (some) really use those power peaks created by harmonious mix of partials in octaves and other slow intervals. may be the fact that the tuner listen very early to the tone to catch that "minimal entropy' is where the resulting difference hide (I feel that softwares are yet slow when it comes to 'listening'. I hope there will be more studies and may be other algorithms or other options, this is a fascinating subject. Regards

Always tune to the middle string. Numb the two outside strings of the three strings of that note ,leaving the middle string still open. Make sure that one is tune then un-numb the two outside strings one at a time and synce them up one at a time. You'll know when you got it right they will all together sound like one string being played.

You should first determine what causes the software picking the wrong note. The first thing you want to do is to determine what frequency A4 is set at. For example, if A4 from your piano has a frequency of 432 Hz and the software is set to A4=440Hz, then things will mess up since they don't match. Once you know that A4 of your piano matches the values of the software, it should be fine. If it doesn't, then it means that your piano is severe out of tune. You can turn on 'forced key recognition' in the software, but that should only be done with single out of tune keys. If the software keeps misjudging the key recognition, you should probably go for a pitch raise. I hope this will help. Kind regards, Peter
@happysteele3 жыл бұрын

@klankenvanger3 жыл бұрын
@@happysteele 'Tuner Pitched' for Android or 'Pitched Tuner' for IOS should do the job for you. There are countless of these sort of apps available and basically they all work the same. Once you have completed recording all 88 keys you'll have a prophile of that specific piano which you'll have to save on your computer. You can then switch to the 'tune'-tab where you'll be able to see the measured frequency of the keys you'll press. So when you have one prophile available, you won't necessarily need an app anymore. But having an app can always help as some sort of reference/security. Hope this helps for you! Peter
@klankenvanger3 жыл бұрын
Oh one more thing: if A4 of your piano is way lower than 440Hz (like for example 430Hz), don't raise it up to 440Hz in one session since the chance of breaking strings increases: the difference in tension becomes too big. In the option menu (file/new/options) of the Entropy software you can fill in the desired concert pitch. Keep it at 430Hz (no problem as long as you don't play together with other instruments) or raise it a little (voor example to 434Hz). After a few months you can choose to tune it again and raise it for another few Hz. In this way it takes a few sessions but it's better for your piano and the tuning will hold much better since your instrument gets time to adjust to the new string tension. A pitch raise is quite a painfull experience for your piano, so you better not rush it. Regards, Peter

I don't think it matters which string is muted; it's just to stop multiple inputs from different strings; so just pick one to mute. Once the isolated string has been tuned to the correct note, then I guess you can move on to the next string of that key and tune it to the same pitch (while muting the other), and same principle if there are three strings. piano-tuner.org/entropy tl,dr; Using an Equally Tempered scale (what you call "a correct tone" which is not accurate and does not exist per se) results in inharmonicity. Entropy-based tuner addresses that.
@NicolasHeine4 жыл бұрын
I am familiar with the tempered scale and that it is not perfectly harmonic. However we use it and accept it. The tempered scale is dividing the octave into 12 equally big semitones. Those frequencies should be the same, no matter where the piano is coming from. So still I don't understand why I have to record all tones before tuning and what this algorithm is really calculating...
@mariussiuram4 жыл бұрын
@@NicolasHeine If you know all that and are interested in more details of piano tuning, you can go to the link I posted, or read the EPT manual. Note that "correct tune" of a note and "correct tune" of a piano string is not the same, when considering the standard tuning curves for pianos that make bass notes flat and treble notes sharp due to the string/rod harmonic deformation (I forgot the proper term for it, but I hope that you understand what I am referring to). And piano aural tuners always take the whole piano --which is the point of a software such as EPT.
@marcan424 жыл бұрын
Of course, if you want to play a piano with near zero inharmonicity and perfectly tuned keys, the solution is simple: get a piano modeling software synth and build yourself a virtual piano with 10-meter long strings :-) Kind of hard to realize practically, but it sounds really nice!

My piano has 85 keys instead of 88. When I finish recording it says that it can't calculate because not all keys are recorded. Can I solve this???
@leodellapietra3 жыл бұрын
yes, you can go on, it's just a warning. Or you change the number of keys to suit those of your piano, by clicking on the piano icon. You can also change the tuning (I did 415 Hz on my old 85-keys vertical piano), the number of keys (from 88 to 85) and the position of the bridge (bass to mid range tones).

maybe they are too far out of tune. Maybe you could use a standard tuner to get them a little closer before you record the notes in entropy

I have 85 keys on my piano and I don't know how to set "key number of A" and "keys on bass bridge". Can anyone help me?
@christophwick8327 жыл бұрын
Just subtract how many keys are missing in the bass section: A 88 key piano starts with an A. The layout in virtual piano should then match your piano's.

I wonder what microphone are you using to record the notes in the piano. There are 2 keys that are clearly out of tune in my piano and I wanted to fix them. Sadly I don't want to break the bank is a professional microphone. Do you know of an inexpensive microphone that does a good job? I figure an improvement over my laptop pinhole microphone might be worth doing. Although, I really didn't want to spend much more than $20 or so. I wonder if I ask for too much.

Anyone having an issue where their audio interace wont show up? Im only seeing built-in mic. Im running Mac with UAD Apollo with thunderbolt but Ive also tried a Focusrite 18i20 USB. Both wont appear!?
@vrsemurphy3 жыл бұрын
Hi there-I was just wondering if you ever had any luck getting the UAD up and running on your Mac with this software? I have a 2018 Mac mini, a 2012 MacBook Air, both running Mohave, and a UAD Apollo Twin MKII and Entropy recognizes the interface within the software but the mic doesn’t register in the idle mode or record mode(although it’s picking up the signal). Using the built-in mic on the MacBook Air works but I was really hoping to use my nice mic?!

what do i do if im not happy with the calculation? iv tryed making it recalculate and it calculates it the same every time. its no good. my solution was to record a grand piano off of a keyboard and use the restore to orginial tuning function to tune an actual piano.

I just fine tuned my Baldwin 5'8" grand by using Pano Tuner free software to compare with two virtual pianos that I have. One was the Bösendorfer and the other a Steinway. The free software gives you the exact frequency to the first decimal place so I just tuned it exactly to the virtual piano (the Bösendorfer; I just compared with the Steinway, which did not have quite as much stretch). That software is useful because it's very difficult in the deep bass and high treble to hear the precise pitch. But it is not a precise way to tune because of 5'8" grand will receive a different tuning than a concert grand. The book I have on tuning says that, for example, the intervals of fourths and fifths may be more narrow. So I was hoping entropy would help that. I appreciate your comment because I was going to redo it with entropy but it seems it may be a waste of time and just make it worse. Perhaps I will try the entropy but test on my electronic keyboard before I tune the piano. Not sure if entropy actually deals with stretch tuning.

My phone does not seem to run it efficiently because it does not have enough power and the application malfunctions on Windows 10. From what I could use on my phone, it does look like a great program, but I would really like to have Windows 10 support (Since Microsoft forced the update on us all).
@bluestreak7118 жыл бұрын
I just took a Windows 8.1 computer I had out of storage and I am having the same problem. The sound going through the program is severely distorted. Assuming that it may not effect the tuning process, I went through with it anyway, but it was giving me off the wall readings wanting me to take the piano further out of tune. With the fourth octave almost perfect, I tested out the program and it wanted me to change the notes drastically in different directions.
@christophwick8328 жыл бұрын
This is known problem with the EPT software that only occurs on windows. You can change the buffer size in the output settings (e.g. double the value) as a workaround.
@bluestreak7118 жыл бұрын
The default buffer size is 50. Should set it to 100? Could I set the buffer size larger? Will I be able to use this software effectively on Windows?
@christophwick8328 жыл бұрын
This value defines the buffer size for the sound in milliseconds. A larger value will increase the delay between 'keypress' and 'output'. I suggest any value between '50 and 2000'. To your last question: Are there any further problems with the software besides the distorted sound?
