If there had been a 2nd year, there should have been a story arc where Kolchak somehow clears his name back in Vegas, and at the same time exposes the authorities who ran him out of town.

Around the time Kolchak aired, iconic series like the Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits were already a fading memory but the genre had a few last trick or treats on TV. The movies of the week were a place where the supernatural to the menacing could still be found with films like the cult classic Duel and the mechanical treads of Killdozer went across the small screen. Indeed pilot films that some hoped would become a series like The Questor Tapes and the Gene Roddenberry occult movie Spectre had been shown but didn't lead anywhere. By the late 1970s TV the Primetime soap opera of Dallas-Dynasty were what audiences tuned into and lead to the drivel of the 1980s which followed. Though Fantasy Island did keep a bit of the supernatural going at times it was more a resort where everyone arrived with a tropical drink in hand and left just as happy at the end. The genre would return not on the big three networks but on cable and were carried by independent stations needing Primetime block after hours of reruns during the day and later at night.

I always loved Kolchak and all of the movies and TV shows mentioned. A big part of my childhood. I heard they were going to do the third movie in the late 70s or early 80s but there was some conflict between Darren McGavin and Dan Curtis. Not sure what happened.

To my mind, the only close second greatest might be the opening theme music from "One Step Beyond"! Give it a whirl! ...

First time I heard it was in Genesis II, Gene Roddenberry's first Dylan Hunt saga based on updated Buck Rogers. Noticed that a year or so later when Kolchack premiered.

Darren McGavin was great in everything he played in. Especially The Night Stalker and Riverboat. His wife Kathie Browne was a very good actress also.

Maybe somebody on KZbin can get a hold of the original series episodes and post them ? This show both scared, terrified, and entertained me when I was a teenager ! Having Dan Curtis direct was a stroke of genius and Richard Matheson is a legendary writer of middle-class terror tales ! Darn shame most of the original actors /actresses are all deceased !:-)

Matheson looks like an older, seedier Paul Newman.

I always thought they should have have veered away from monsters occasionally. Maybe give us a serial killer, a ghost story, or a satanic cult.
@gabrielbennett5162
@gabrielbennett5162 Жыл бұрын
They sort of did give us those things already. "The Ripper" was a serial killer; "The Knightly Murders" dealt with a suit of armor possessed by the vengeful spirit of a French knight and "Chopper" dealt with the vengeful ghost of a murdered outlaw biker; "The Devil's Platform" had a politician who sold his soul to the devil and an active witch's coven was shown in "The Trevi Collection."

I personally consider The Night Stalker, The Night Strangler, and the first episode of the series as canon. Everything else was garbage. If not for Darren McGavin,they would be unbearable.
@jamesrav
@jamesrav Жыл бұрын
my error , I thought the 1st episode was the female vampire (quite good, they really hired the right gal). We then do agree The Ripper. The Ripper episode was pretty darn good too, there might have been small room for improvement but it had some epic scenes (the fight on the skyscraper being built, the break-out of jail). That one could have been a movie ; I didn't like all the attempts at humor in the series , it kind of killed the tension. I guess there was a decision to play it light and loose, but it really was a different vibe compared to the 1st movie. But maybe once you got past a vampire, everything becomes camp and ridiculous, so humor was deemed essential.

Um, in my opinion The 2 movies first and a handful of episodes (Zombie, Ripper, Female vampire , Spanish Moss Monster, ).

Take it Brian Cranston to play Kolchak .... the would have to keep it in the 70s though. There are to many modern short cuts in today’s life that would take away from the store
