Enya was born Eithne Ni Bhraonain in Donegal, Ireland. Enya studied classical music at college under private tuition. On leaving college she was asked by Producer Nicky Ryan to join her siblings in their family band. She did so for a short time, but found it too restrictive musically, and so in 1982 she joined Nicky Ryan and Roma Ryan in a creative and business partnership. Enya's first commission was to write a score for Sir David Puttnam for his film "The Frog Prince". Then, the triumvirate secured the soundtrack to the BBC documentary series 'The Celts'. Enya was then signed by Warner Music and all three by EMI Music Publishing. The first album of this contract was "Watermark" with the hit single "Orinoco Flow". This was followed by "Shepherd Moons", "The Memory of Trees", "Paint the Sky With Stars", "A Day Without Rain" which produced the single, "Only Time".

Until now, I believed (jokingly) that she never spoke, she only sang as her means of communication with others. But her speaking voice is so... appropriate for her. That's one of my favourite song on the album. I like that "beat", I like the way her voice sound on some lyrics, and I absolutely love when at some point of the song you can hear in the back her voice doing a "pulse" of its own. It sounds amazing. It's typically the kind of song I admire Enya a lot for: how to enhance a simple melody into a marvelous piece of music.

I’m an avid cyclist and I have a lot of her music in my general “road trip” playlist that I always listen to in my Spotify account when I do my long distance rides. To a lot of bike riders, I tend to look “strange” because I don’t listen to straight up EDM or have hip hop in heavy rotation when out riding. When it comes to long distance riding for me, music is just as much of an important tool for me that sets memories of rides I have enjoyed numerous times as it is a form of mental yoga for me when I ride. Because cycling (in particular, long distance riding) is my happy place, I have many wonderful and vivid memories of a lot of my rides. When I hear Even in the Shadows, it always reminds me of riding along the Elliot Bay Trail toward Downtown Seattle in the evening hours, or riding the Scenic Loop that is the Magnolia neighborhood. Her choral version of Silent Night (which is the only Christmas tune that I have in rotation of my Road Trip playlist) often times comes on when I come close to the end of a near 40 mile ride at a very specific area of a particular route that’s along the North Seattle look that I do. So I always wind up thinking about that specific spot and what I see along it every time I ride it when that song comes on. Pilgrim always reminds me of how life is just this great big journey that we’re all on and we’re always trying to find out who we are, so that’s another song that’s on my road trip playlist because of the message. Marble Halls, Only Time, I Could Never Say Goodbye, So I Could Find My Way, these few and some others helped me through the grief cycles after losing my dad to cancer in 2015. Literally a lot of her songs helped to keep me sane through that dark time in my life.
