"That's right. I'm bad." Fun Fact: The animatronic General Spider seen at the film's climax was one of the earliest prop jobs done by Jamie Hyneman, star and co-producer of MythBusters (2003). Safety Guarantee Fact: The safety of the spiders were paramount throughout the entire production, so for one scene where McLintock (John Goodman) had to spray an arachnid with insecticide, then squash it with his boot, the production went to extreme measures: first, a dummy spider was sprayed. then Goodman donned special boots with a hollowed out sole for the squash shot, so that the spider would just curl up inside and wait for the next take. When dead spiders were needed, the filmmakers used bodies of arachnids that had died of natural causes. Spider Wrangler Fact: The small spiders used in the film were Avondale spiders (Delena Cancerides), a harmless species from New Zealand that were provided by Landcare Research in Auckland. Despite their fierce appearance, this spider is a docile member of the crab-spider family and is, in fact, harmless to humans. They were not allowed back in New Zealand for quarantine reasons. The giant "spider" used in the film was a species of a bird-eating tarantula, which can attain a legspan of eight inches or more. Those types of tarantulas are not easy to handle and can give a nasty bite. The spiders in the film were managed and handled by famed entomologist Steven R. Kutcher.

My uncle told me a story many years ago. He said had a friend who lived in rural Arizona. I guess there's a certain type of rare small cactus that grows in the desert out there that's illegal to dig up and plant it on your property. I don't remember what it was called. Well, of course, this friend of his decided for whatever reason that he had to have one. So, one day he ventures out into the desert, eventually finds one, digs it up, brings it back home, pots it up, and puts it on his coffee table in the living room. After a week or so, he noticed the cactus was starting to bulge. After another week, even more so. A few days after that, he comes home from work one day and notices the cactus is split open. Movement begins to catch his eye all around the living room. Yeah, the cactus had a tarantula nest in it. Yeah, uh...I'd be moving out immediately. How could you possibly get them all? I think a tarantula nest can have like 1500-2000 babies, and they're nickel-to-quarter size when born.

I'm terrified of spiders. Always have been. This came out in 1990 when I was 11. When that first spider jump happened, I jumped clean over the couch I'd been sitting on and ran outside with my Daddy. He told me to go back in and finish the movie as a sort of therapy. I did. It left me scared to turn lamps on and off or put shoes on my feet without shaking them to make sure there wasn't anything in them. I also wanted our home to be seriously be sprayed for insects every 3-6 months. In 1997, Anaconda came out. My Daddy was scared of snakes. When it came out on VHS, I bought a copy, wrapped it up and gave it to my Daddy. He unwrapped and then flung it across the room. I just died laughing and asked, "What about watching it as a form of therapy?" He looked at me with the most serious look he had and said, "Get that movie out of this house!" He was dead serious but it was playful at the same time. TBH, I don't know if he ever found the courage to watch it. I'm still scared of spiders but I've watched this film so many times that I know when to look away. Great reaction!

My mother is an arachnophobe. When this movie came out she had a similar idea about therapy. We went on opening night, I was 12? 13? The cinema was a 500 seater. Full. As the movie progressed my mother started hugging herself. Pulled her feet up off the floor onto the seat. Balled her fists up in front of her face. Just at the scene in the basement where the General stands up and jump scares Jeff Daniels, I ran my fingers over my mother's neck. She screamed, kicked a popcorn bucket over the room and 498 other people screamed in unison. And just me, cackling like a maniac so hard I nearly blacked out. I still can't tell this story without grinning ear to ear. My mother is still an arachnophobe. I am still arsehole. A grinning arsehole.

fun fact idk if anyone told you this but the main spider hated the Jeff, x'D for whatever reason, They could never get along during filming. Jeff disliked him saying Bob only had to do one good take, but as actors if bob didn't do right they'd have to reshoot the scene again and again, so maybe that was it. Also, as terrifying as Big Bob was, he still wasn't scary enough for Arachnophobia. So the production painted purple stripes on his back and added a prosthetic abdomen “to give him greater bulk,”

Now he got spider aids, lol. Funny story, I had a friend who was scared to death of spiders. And he was a big guy, about 6'4 and 260 lbs, which made it even funnier. So we go fishing, and his Father had a boat at a lake waiting for us, we turn it over and he sees a big spider, then it goes under the metal seat, and it is out of sight. I start loading our gear, rods, tackle, cooler, etc. and he says he is not getting in the boat until we find that spider. I'm like, ur kidding right, and he says no, he is not kidding. So we stand there for a few minutes, and I do not know what to do. We try to find the spider, but we can not find it. So we had to drive to another lake and get a different boat, and haul it to the lake we wanted to fish. Cost us at least an hour of fishing time, and I never let him hear the end of it.

You're brave for watching this willingly! Your comments and deadpan stares gave me a lot of good laughs. I had a conversation with a woman from northern Arizona, who told me about the tarantula migrations (!!!) that happen every year. They come out of the hills and the entire ground looks like it's moving. She said the tarantulas CHASE HER DOGS across the yard when she'd let them out to "play" with them. She's says it's so cute to watch. NO. You couldn't pay me a 7-figure salary to live in a tarantula migration zone. Jesus H Christ.

We didn't even know that was a thing and my girl asked if it would be unforgivably rude to leave immediately haha. We ended up staying, she did her best not to freak out too much. We only saw a few and tried to avoid the ones we didn't see. She was a real trooper!

Thanks for that JL & Mr Blank. Jl, I am so so sorry. I shouldn't have been laughing as hard as I was. But Feth me seeing you jump so badly that Drogo woke up & looked round... [chef's kiss] Perfection 🤣😂🤣But I will happily admit that when I first saw this film I was terrified. Still makes me laugh how much this film gets to so many people. Thanks to Romulus for being your emotional support friend when you needed him. I do have to now pose you a question JL. Which would you rather face. Those spiders or the Candyman? Much love to everyone from here in the UK

Everyone has their thing, mine is creepy crawly things and I saw this movie once and that was enough for me. I think I remember someone showing me a video of a person sleeping and a spider crawling into their mouth and not leaving, I think it had to do with the warm breath attracts spiders and was told that happens often. As a vet tech for some 25 years now I'm here to tell you that tarantulas aren't that scary. They're the most trainable of the arachnids but you have to catch them when they're young. I've seen and petted many tarantulas. Their fur is actually quite soft and they will look you in the eye. They respond well to our attention and love like kittens do. Yes, they will bite, but only if they are provoked.

When that scene came showing the spider on the dead mortician's face, the guy shrieked, and his knee-jerk reaction kicked his bucket into the air so high, it showered my friend and me with popcorn... which felt like spiders, so then WE started screaming and kicking in in our seats, too.

You made it! Another great reaction, be kind rewind! If there's one creature than needs to have a bark, it's spiders so you'll know where they are 😄 I saw this at the dollar theater, it was a Friday night and there were two or three high school guys with their girlfriends down close to the front, they were all screaming and laughing through the whole thing, but the way they were pawing on each other afterwards I'm sure there were uh...happy endings 😄 I'm one of those people who just relocate most spiders, they don't bother me too much, and I grew up out in the country so shaking out my shoes was already habit, but I doubled down after this movie, it gives me the heebada jeebies! Oo and another one I saw at that theater was _The Hunt for Red October_ with Sean Connery, if you haven't seen it and it's not on the list, it's definitely worth adding 👍
