@coryallen2863 7 күн бұрын
Wow never knew that and eom even got that vibe on first watch. Was riddik part of that too?
@patjacksonpodium
@patjacksonpodium 7 күн бұрын
@coryallen2863 No, Riddick wasn't a part of it afaik. I'm not sure at what stage they were at when it got rejected, but clearly some elements are similar between the two films (crash land on a barren planet, prisoners, etc). If you can get your hands on the making-of stuff on the Blu-ray version of Alien 3 there's literally hours of material. Alien 3 was a wild clusterfvck of a production. The behind the scenes drama is almost more fascinating than the movie itself. Actually, considering what they went through to make it, knowing how it all went down made me appreciate it more. (Also the Assembly Cut is much better, and the Blu-ray really cleans up a lot of the effects, it's well worth the watch.)
@SFOlson
@SFOlson 6 күн бұрын
@@patjacksonpodium I love Alien 3, and the Assembly Cut made it even better. And still to this day, I’ve never understood the amount of hate that it gets. It’s certainly a different kind of movie than the first two, but that’s what I like about it.
@patjacksonpodium
@patjacksonpodium 6 күн бұрын
@@SFOlson It IS better than its reputation for sure, at least from a filmmaking perspective. I have a begrudging respect for it at this point, but I can't say it's a satisfying conclusion to Ripley's story. And as far as why people hated it? That's easy. Hicks and Newt. As much as I respect Alien 3, that's still one of the most bafflingly *dumb* decisions I've ever seen a sequel make. (Maybe THE dumbest up until Palpatine somehow returned) It's so needlessly cruel, and just utterly kneecaps the beautiful character development of the previous film, especially when viewed after the Extended Cut of Aliens. It really leaves you asking what the point of any of this even is. So it's a hard movie to love. I don't hate it but I can't fault anyone who does... because it does kind of make what happened beforehand pointless. If I just put that aside and watch it in a bubble, sure. It's fine. Not great. But I really wish they had taken it in a different direction. Following the novels instead (Earth Hive, Nightmare Asylum, The Female War) would have been AMAZING.
@SFOlson
@SFOlson 6 күн бұрын
@@patjacksonpodium I agree that with you that it could have been an even better movie if they had gone in a different direction, or followed the novelizations, but they didn’t. And I’m certainly not one to begrudge anyone for disliking the movie, but I, personally enjoy it. And in the context of that movie, I immediately dismiss any argument about Newt and Hicks. It wouldn’t have worked, or at least not with Carrie Henn, who had long since left acting, and had absolutely no desire to return to acting at the time that they were filming Alien 3. So bringing back such an important character like Newt, only to have her recast with a completely different actress, would have been, in my opinion, as dumb as bringing Palpatine back. Now you might have been able to make it work bringing Michael Biehn back as Hicks, but how would you explain the drastic change in appearance for Newt? No, the direction they went, in my opinion, is in keeping with the tragedy of Ripley as a character, and how do you keep the tragedy of the character going, easy, by killing off characters that you have become invested in. Is it a perfect movie, absolutely not, but it is far superior movie when compared to Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

I am a big Alien/Aliens fan so when this movie came out Inthiyght I’d give a chance. It was dumped into theaters on Valentines Weekend by a studio with no confidence in it. Low budget. No stars. No expectations. I LOVED it. It was not what I expected but the concept, characters, and (most of all) Riddick made me fall in love. It’s a movie that gets better on rewatches and while I have enjoyed all of the sequels (and the video game!) nothing tops this first movie. Also the "purple eyes" isn't wrong. Riddick is based off of Vin Diesel's D&D character who is a Drow. In the sequel film for this, The Chronicles Of Riddick, Vin Diesel actually taught Judi Dench how to play D&D while filming. She now DMs for her grandkids in family get togethers

This movie was actually a working script of what was supposed to be Alien 3. It makes sense. These creatures look very much like Xenomorphes, and reads like an alien film. Also Riddick is a murderer with a shaved bald head like the convicts from Alien 3. I think they missed a chance to turn this into a character from the Alien universe to pass the franchise off to.

"They say most of your brain shuts down in cryo-sleep. All but the primitive side, the animal side. No wonder I'm still awake." Fun Fact: The character of Riddick (Vin Diesel) was a woman in an early draft of the script. Location Location Fact: Filmed in Australia. However it was cold and they were misting water on the actors to make it appear as if they were sweating. Ending Changed Fact: The original ending had Riddick (Vin Diesel) being killed instead of Carolyn (Radha Mitchell). Studio agreed Riddick was a more interesting character for possible sequels. Promotional Tie-In Fact: The contact lenses Vin Diesel wore in the movie, while a prototype during production, were briefly available to the public from Lens Quest following the release of the film. They were called The Shine Job. Shine Job Fact: The contacts that Vin Diesel wore to play Riddick were a prototype. After the first day of filming, when they tried to remove the contact lenses, they couldn't. Due to where they were filming, they had to have an optometrist flown in from the nearest town, three hours away.

My dude this movie is chock full of folks who blew up in the 2000's. Vin Diesel what needs to be said? Cole Hauser (Johns) went on to become the lead cowboy on the Yellowstone tv show and a villain in the Fast and Furious movies. Radha Mitchell (Fry) has played in a ton of big budget movies like Man on Fire, Olympus Has Fallen and Silent Hill. Then there is Claudia Black who plays Shazza. Pitch Black was her first big budget movie. During the filming of this project, she was already starting a role that would put her on the science fiction map the tv show Farscape. For four seasons and a miniseries, she played the character of Aeryn Sun. Her character Aeryn is a human looking alien raised from birth to be a soldier in an interstellar military force. The character arc of Aeryn and the main character John Creighton (an astronaut from Earth played by American actor Ben Browder) has got to be the most bittersweet and gangsta love story in all of science fiction. Aeryn grew up without love and knew only war. John grew up loved but in the shadow of his legendary astronaut father. John teaches her how to be vulnerable and love someone. Aeryn helps John to be his own type of hero. Early on Aeryn and the other characters would often have to save John. But in time, John easily became the leader and the dude who was saving everyone else. Near the end of the show, John and Aeryn were wrecking shop like a space based version of Bonnie and Clyde. The on screen chemistry of their characters was so palpable they both had to constantly tell interviewers "Hey we are just friends and coworkers. We are dating/married to other people". When Farscape wrapped up, Claudia Black and Ben Browder were brought on as main characters on the long running tv series Stargate SG-1. They played teammate but not lovers. Since Farscape and Stargate SG-1, Claudia has become a highly sought after actor and voice actor in dozens of sci-fi/fantasy projects.

What’s the “Fry” at the end of Radha Mitchell’s name? Did she just recently get married because she’s never used that name before.

It's when Riddick starts fighting with Johns cause he wants Riddick to kill the little girl for bait that you realise things don't match up what Johns was saying about Riddick to Fry. Riddick's last straw with Johns was cause he wanted to kill a young girl for bait.. That's why he told the kid don't you cry for Johns don't you dare, cause she doesn't know what he was asking Riddick to do before the fight started

Vin Diesel pre Vin Ego was awesome. Knock Around Guys, Find Me Guilty, XXX, A Man Apart, The Pacifier, and even his role in Boiler Room. He knocked all those roles out of the park.

You should really watch Riddick: Dark Fury next. It's animated but literally picks up immediately after he says "Tell them Riddick died. He died somewhere on that planet."

Good job. You noticed early on something was off with the boy. I did too but learning voice patterns is something I do so I can mimic them.
