***This is the director's cut, with the darker of the two possible endings. It's the only copy we were able to get, and was not a choice. It's simply what we had. Just throwing it out there so people know yes, this is not the only ending, and no, it wasn't a choice, it was simply availability.

The theatrical ending has him out, helping his wife pack up his stuff in LA, presumably with the intent of moving back to New York with her. He gets his tape recorder back from the investigators, it survived the fire in the room. He starts playing it, hearing his voice describe the room, and his wife hears it too. Then, they hear their daughter’s voice on the recorder, we hear the scene we saw happen, and Mike just looks at his wife, while she drops what she was holding and looks shocked as all hell. Mike just keeps looking at her with this expression that says: do you believe me now? Personally, I think that’s a more powerful ending.

I agree 100%. What's cool about this (theatrical) ending is that it's open to interpretation -- did they REALLY leave the room, or are they still there?

@kck9742 i thought of that too. I mean, this did seem like a room that would never let him out so its definitely possible he's still there hallucinating. Maybe his wife too since she was being called to the room by a fake image of john cusack on the video call

Which do you refer to as the “new” ending: the second one shot (theatrical) or the second one released (director’s cut)? The dc one shown here is more typical, indicating that they never left, similar to stuff they’ve done in The Others and Insidious and so on. The original released ending, with the recording, is less typical, because it reveals and answer to a question that wasn’t asked: whether the wife believed what he said happened in that room.

15 Fun Facts About “1408” 1. Stephen King’s original story began as a sample of how to write a first draft in his nonfiction book “On Writing”. However, he liked the story so much that he completed it. 2. Allegedly inspired by the real life haunted Emily Morgan Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. However, the hotel does not actually have a room 1408. 3. Initially Kate Walsh was cast as Mike’s ex-wife, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Grey’s Anatomy. 4. Swedish director Mikael Håfström was best known for his 2003 horror movie Evil. He would then go on to direct the Anthony Hopkins-starring exorcism movie The Rite in 2011. 5. Early on in production, Keanu Reeves was attached to play Mike Enslin, before John Cusack was cast. 6. The numbers in 1408 add up to 13 (1+4+8), and since most hotels do not have a 13th floor due to superstition, this just results in the 14th floor actually being the 13th one in actuality. (It isn't just hotels most buildings that have over 13 floors won't actually call the 13th floor the 13th floor I do a lot of work in Boston and most of them skip right over that floor number) 7. During production, Mary McCormack (Mike’s ex-wife Lily) was pregnant, and thus most of her shots had be done from the waist up. 8. The fictional Dolphin Hotel was comprised of the the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC (for exteriors) and its lobby was The Reform Club in London, England. 9. Room 1408 itself was shot entirely on a soundstage at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England. 10. Allegedly, the axe used by the firefighter to break the door down was the same one used by Jack Nicholson in The Shining, since both films were shot in the same studio space and the axe was in storage with other props. 11. In another Shining reference, one of the earlier victims of room 1408 was named Grady. 12. The original ending was reshot because test audiences found it to be too much of a “downer”. The new theatrical ending saw Mike survive and escape room 1408. While the original, much darker ending is featured on the Director’s Cut. 13. Many fans were also disappointed that Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic line, “I warned you about 1408” was present in the trailer but not the theatrical film. 14. John Cusack was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actor, but lost to Will Smith for I Am Legend. 15. 1408 was a decent box office hit, grossing $133 million on a $25 million budget.

This movie is the rarest of cases. It's the one Stephen King adaptation that is far superior to the original story. It was written as an example story for his book On Writing, and he ended up finishing it. It plays out like a fever dream where all manner of spooky things happen, but he is never locked in the room. The movie fleshed things out in so many good ways even King loved it.

What about "The Mist"?
@angelwolfplays6456
@angelwolfplays6456 Жыл бұрын
@@ericjohnson6120 The Mist pretty much stuck with the story as it was written. The only real deviation was the tacked-on ending, which I wasn't a fan of. 1408 basically tossed out the part of the short story where Enslin is actually in 1408, and replaced it with far more terrifying concepts and visuals. The room never eats the key in the short story. Nor does the clock countdown a repeating hour. Enslin's family is never mentioned. Everything that happened to him in the room was written for the movie and I think it's an improvement over the original short story.

The way I interpreted his laughter at the end, he wasn't going crazy. He was a bit manic, but he was laughing because of what the room was doing. When he set the room on fire, initially it tried to extinguish it with the sprinklers. When that didn't work, the room began to taunt him with his dead daughter again, which made him laugh. The room lost, it was dying and couldn't save itself, and in it's pettiness, was lashing out at him. He recognized the room lashing out for what it was, and laughed at it, because there was nothing it could do to hurt him at that point. He was going to die, had already taken all the emotional abuse the room could throw at him, and in the end he'd won because he'd killed the room. In short: he was laughing at the room's petulant, spiteful death throes. The room was mad because it was going to die, and it's pathetic attempts to hurt him one last time were, in the moment, funny to him.

The song "We've Only Just Begun" is a classic 70s hit from the Carpenter's sung by the late great legend Karen Carpenter who died from complications from her dealing with anorexia. They had many hits including Please Mr. Postman, Rainy Days and Mondays, Top of the World, Only Yesterday and their Christmas album is second to none. I do agree that they tweaked the song so be extra loud and twisted it to sound creepy but the original version isn't creepy at all and is a love song.

"You do drink don't you?" "Of course. I just said I was a writer." Fun Fact: Mary McCormack was pregnant throughout filming, explaining why most shots of her are filmed above the waist. Inspirational Background Fact: The initial story inspiration came from a collection of real-life news stories about world-renowned parapsychologist Christopher Chacon's investigation of the most notoriously haunted hotel rooms in the world. In the U.S. alone Chacon has investigated hundreds of haunted hotels, from New York City to San Francisco, such as The Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, Battery Carriage House in South Carolina, the Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana and the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado in California. Legal Enthusiast Fact: 1408 (2007) was actually quite accurate in stating that there are laws in place within the United States forcing hotels to accept any guests. While this does not necessarily mean they can request any room they want and stay there as portrayed in the film, innkeepers and hotel/motel owners have a legal duty to accept guests. The hotel owner has the right to reject or expel persons whom he or she reasonably deems objectionable. It has to be objectively reasonable, though (claiming the hotel room the guest wants is haunted would not be likely to be found in a court of law to be a reasonable basis for rejecting a guest). There are also anti-discrimination laws in place to protect hotel guests of protected groups. The only way Mike Enslin (John Cusack) could be rejected or removed would be if he had no intention of being a guest, if he were being a nuisance, damaging property, if he refused to pay due fees, or if he were suspected to injure the hotel's business or guests in a hazardous and uncomfortable or dangerous situation. If room 1408 was deemed damaged or unsafe, Enslin would not be able to stay there - however, claiming a room is haunted by ghosts doesn't count, nor does there being earlier deaths or crimes in the room stand up as a reasonable basis to bar a guest from using a particular room.
@thomasriddle7005
@thomasriddle7005 Жыл бұрын
Not a legal expert by any means but consistently not using the room even when at full capacity and using safety as the standard and considering the abnormal amount of deaths and injuries to that particular room should provide a reasonable coverage against potential legal action. If anything, I would think that allowing a guest to use that room would place the hotel at more legal jeopardy due to past history of death and injury and to discrimination laws like this because they let this guy do it but why not someone else.

I like how low key creepy the theatrical ending, because we get to let someone else into the idea that whatever people on the outside experience, the things that happened in the room, all happen - no matter how impossible. Frankly, I had the room pegged. I never thought he made it out until the fire. In the Director’s Cut, though-I didn’t think of this before-I think it’s actually just implying that the room can’t harm anyone anymore. Jackson (the manager) was smiling, despite the situation, to tell her the thing that got interrupted. I think he was trying to console her with her husband’s remarkable victory Thanks for letting us watch with you. Glad you enjoyed it 💙

I remember watching 1408 with my mom and little sister. My mom would bring the DVD home and we’d watch the movie together. I was the one who was so scared watching the movie. But now I watch it with you, it wasn’t all that bad. My mom would try to scare my sister and I growing up every time we’d watch the movie

Never seen that ending. 🤔 But see'ing it now, I definitely prefer the other ending when he's with his wife and he pulls out the recorder

J, I have a suggestion: Frequency (2000) with Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid. It has to do with a ham radio that connects a father and son across three decades... and they have to catch a killer. Thrills and feels. 🙂

Omg the theatrical ending is so much !!!!!!!!! better. It doesnt have the funeral/sam jackson stuff, Jackson just says "well done". Leaves his character as cool and smooth instead of paniced in that last mirror jumpscare that makes no sense. Enslin lives but plays the recorder for his wife later and they hear their daughters voice so she realizes what he went through was real.

To be fair to the room, it's been made painfully clear that the room is a menace. It killed 50 people. Yet no one wants to talk about it. It's everyone else that's the reason the room is killing everyone. Hotel should have boarded up that room with some plywood and wallpaper and forget it ever existed. If the room makes a habit of making that impossible, then tell anyone who requests to sod off and then forcefully remove them if they won't.

Great video man, this movie has always been one of my favorite horror movies. The room feels so overwhelmingly evil in a very depressing way. Out of all the Stephen King based movies, this one is a different feeling. Even compared to Overlook, this room has cosmic horror strangeness all over it .

We weren't laughing at you, EOM; this movie is terrifying. I don't trust anyone who can sit through a movie like this unmoved, with a disdainful smirk on their face. I know someone like that, and they're creepier than anything in room 1408.
