The woman who played Brian's love interest actually became a mayor of a town in Britain. One of her first acts was to unban this movie.

Except the movie was never banned in that town in Wales, but she did arrange a showing because the movie had never been shown in the town, purely for financial reasons not because of any ban. In fact there were only a couple of places in the UK where it was actually banned. But the rumour that it was , was good publicity for it

The alien scene is sharp social commentary on Star Wars mania, and the way every TV show, production studio, and advertising, everywhere, seemed to shoehorn in some Star Wars or space reference, since the world had gone so crazy for it.
@willcool713
@willcool713 9 ай бұрын
@@coyotefever105 Maybe you had to be there, but yeah, the world went mad for all things space and Star Wars. There were space themed plotlines on soap operas. James Bond had a movie on a space shuttle in orbit. Happy Days, the fifties themed TV show, had an episode and spin-off with Robin Williams as an alien time-traveller from 25 years in the future (contemporary time then). You couldn't escape it. Star Wars mania was in everything, on every magazine cover, in bad car ads, fluff pieces on the news, references on cop shows, billboards and bus benches, gas station promotions, window art at the grocery store, holiday decorations, it was just everywhere (and George Lucas encouraged it for a fat slice of licencing and merchandising). So the bit in the movie was a shrewd way to shoehorn in the same silly space themed BS, in the most ludicrous way possible, to turn it into satire. It was hysterical at the time, very irreverent.

The Smegol lookin guy is Terry Gilliam, the only American Python and the guy who used to do their animated stuff. He also codirected Holy Grail and went on to be a well respected director. He did movies like 12 Monkeys, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchhaisen.. all are classics... and if you wanna see one of his that feels kinda Python ish but more story and adventure, see TIME BANDITS. When Monty Python worked with BBC they had it written in their contract that they couldn't show "full frontal nudity". They found that phrase so funny, it became a standing joke. They also made sure to include scenes with full frontal nudity in their films, just because there was no one to tell them they couldn't. So, not key to the plot, but key to the lore. Oh, and the jailer that looks like smeagol is of course the great Terry Gilliam. Please watch some Terry Gilliams movies! They are all great, and super weird.

"It's symbolic of his struggle against reality!" How they predicted that in 1979 is absolutely mindboggling. Also, the actors playing the roman soldiers in the Biggus Dickus scene were told nothing except if you laugh, you won't get paid. This was pure honest reactions and not actual acting.

"Understand?" "Yes, sir." "Now write it out a hundred times." "Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir." "Hail Caesar. And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off." Fun Fact: The six Monty Python members played 40 characters. Cameos Cameos Fact: Spike Milligan was on vacation in Tunisia while this movie was being shot. When the Python team realized he was nearby, they offered him a part. George Harrison briefly appears as Mr. Papadopolous. The costume designer Charles Knode appeared as the passer-by who saw Brian (Graham Chapman) emerge from the crashed spaceship. Political Parody Fact: This movie pokes fun at revolutionary groups and 1970s British left-wing politics. The groups in this movie all oppose the Roman occupation of Judea, but fall into the familiar pattern of intense competition among factions that appears, to an outsider, to be over ideological distinctions so small as to be invisible, thus portraying the "narcissism of small differences" phenomenon. Music Enthusiast Fact: Eric Idle originally recorded "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" in his normal singing voice. After deciding this was not quite right, he re-recorded it with a Cockney accent, singing the new dub in a hotel room with mattresses pushed up against the walls. The line "Bernie, I said, they'll never make their money back" refers to Lord Bernard Delfont pulling out of financing the movie at the last minute. What Script Fact: When Michael Palin as Pontius Pilate addressed the soldiers daring them to laugh, he was truly daring them. The soldier extras were ordered to stand there and not laugh, but not told what Palin was going to do. Palin, in fact, can barely stifle his own laughter when he asks if "Biggus Dickus" is "risible" to one of the soldiers. The famous scene required a fair bit of planning. Michael Palin, John Cleese and Graham Chapman rehearsed it many times the day before the shoot, with other extras playing the Roman centurion guards, so as to get their timing and movement right and to allow director Terry Jones to ensure the lighting, camera blocking and positioning were all correct. On the day of shooting the extras were changed at the last minute, as Jones knew that the only way the scene would work was if the extras did not know in advance what was going to be said to them so as to capture their reactions to the dialogue and Palin's delivery of it. The resulting comedy gold from this scene is mostly due to the unrehearsed reaction of the new extras. Jones made sure that the whole scene was shot in just two takes. It is believed the second take for most of the setups were the ones used in the film.

Life of Brian is a little more subtle than Holy Grail. Holy Grail is ridiculous, slap-stick style humor, and it's great stuff. Life of Brian is more social commentary and requires the viewer to think about the scenario a little more rather than simply accept the surface level setup. The hilarity of the people at he back not being able to hear the Sermon on the Mount, the idea of singing about the bright side of life while being crucified, an ancient version of suicide terrorists, the splitting of religions into sects for the silliest of reasons (the sandal vs. the gourd), etc, etc. It's really quite brilliant, and it only grows funnier with each viewing. My favorite scene remains the centurion explaining Latin to Brian in the style of an old British Latin teacher. Absolutely HILARIOUS.

One of the funniest movies ever! Also, smell/stink is all relative. I was watching a documentary on the Mau Mau rebellion in the 1950s and it was mentioned that the Europeans could smell the body odor of the Mau Mau a couple miles away. But the Mau Mau could also smell the soap and perfume of the Europeans across the same distance and they were equally repulsed by it. It's just what you're used to. ✌🏽👃🏽

Died of cancer in 1989 Terry Jones and Michael Palin - mostly did documentaries after Python Eric Idle - the musical one. Turned Holy Grail into Broadway musical Spamalot. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" is one of the most requested songs at funerals worldwide. Terry Gilliam - American, renounced US citizenship to become British. Animated all the cartoons. The Meaning of Life 1983 - last official movie Parrot Sketch Not Included - 1989 tv special, hosted by Steve Martin, the last time all 6 were together before Chapman's passing. Monty Python Live at the Aspen Comedy Festival 1998 - a stage interview that's hilarious, and the only time all 6 are together for ~16 years. Monty Python Live (Mostly) or One Down Five to Go - 2014 - their fairwell performance as they're all elderly and had some legal bills to pay. They went out with a bang and got some nice retirement checks. Terry Jones then passed in 2020.

Loving your reactions, catching up. Ive just watched your holy grail reaction and now this. I first saw the holy grail when i was about 12, typocal British fair, i was a bit too young for the tv show - monty python's flying circus. Although it was repeated several times by the BBC. George Harrison from the Beatles is responsible for funding this, his name is in the credits and the only reason was that he wanted to see it. What a guy. I always thought holy grail was funnier, but over the years ive come to appreciate the life of brian more. More of a story rsther than a lot of sketches. But still the pithy social commentary. It was banned for a long time. There's an interview with John Cleese and Michael palin definding the film against 2 bishops. According to the documentary of the film/pythons the only time super easy going Palin got mad. Graham Chapman (Brian) was the kead in both as he had the best leading man persona. But john cleese wanted to be Brian. And Chapman , as you saw only had a couple of other roles (biggus diccus and one of the 3 headed knights in holy grail) I can't imagine anyone but Chapman in the kead, the others are amazing character actors. As others have said, theres the meaning of life. Its good but not my fav. Yes, please watch 'time bandits', Jabberwocky and 'a fish called wanda' and Terry Gillian movies the fisher king (robin Williams/jeff bridges) anf 12 monkeys (bruce willis/brad pitt)

Good choice on seeing Barbarella. I love that movie. Anyhow, of course life of Brian. Most of montey pythons movies were pretty good. If you like English humor, mostly their show flying circus was pretty good. I watched that for the longest time when I was younger. If you like. Monty, Python Benny Hill is a great English comedian with a good show and lots of beautiful women and I hope you've enjoyed your cookies. I don't know how much you eating so far, but if you're anything like my mom they're probably gone by now and I just added two new babies because supposedly there parents said they didn't have time for them because they work too much and that old b******* anyhow, hopefully you did a reaction to Barbarella. That would be sweet and I'm looking forward to the Porky's one, two and three reactions and hopefully bachelor party house party one, two and three and class act and there's much more I can send you away that you probably either have already been sent and haven't decided or you know what happened. Anyhow, hope you and the fur babies have a good Christmas

Jumping on the Fish Called Wanda bandwagon. My favorite movie and funny as hell. The cast is stacked and Kevin Kline is a lunatic genius 😂

@JL Yes its a treasure but many Python fans see the other film as superior as well. (Holy Grail) Was nice to see you get most of the banter and chat these films are famous for.

One of the most amazing things about this movie is that it was paid for by George Harrison, because he was friends with Eric Idle and their financial backers backed out at the last minute. George mortgaged his house and paid the money just because he wanted to see it. The most expensive movie ticket ever.
