"Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!" Fun Fact: The famous depiction of galloping horses by using coconut shells (a traditional radio-show sound effect) came about from the purely practical reason that the production simply could not afford real horses. Metal Funding Fact: Funds earned by Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) went towards funding this movie. The band were such fans of the show, they would halt recording sessions just to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969). Led Zeppelin and Genesis contributed to this movie's budget as well. Swallow This Fact: The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is roughly eleven meters per second, or twenty-four miles per hour, beating its wings seven to nine times per second rather than forty-three. It's true: A five-ounce bird cannot carry a one pound coconut, but furthermore, no swallow weighs five ounces. The English barn swallow weighs only twenty grams (two-thirds of an ounce). Historical Fact: The French tactic of pelting Arthur and his knights with livestock echoes the relatively modern legend of a medieval siege of the fortified southern French town of Carcassonne. Said to have been near starvation, the townspeople used the last of their food to pelt the besieging army to convince them, suffering likewise, that the town was well stocked with food and that the siege was hopeless. The tactic was successful, and the siege was lifted.

@gokaury

"Your father smelt of elderberries!" The French knight is essentially calling Arthur's father a drunkard. In medieval times, many alcoholic beverages were made from the elderberry. And if there is anyone out there that can taunt someone, especially in a stream of consciousness manner, it would be John Cleese, the actor who played the French knight and Sir Lancelot. He's hilarious. And I love the cop out ending. They literally and figuratively ended the movie with a double entendre. It was chiefly because of two things: 1) the Pythons didn't know how to end it and 2) they ran out of the funds to film a conclusive ending. Such a clever and original movie. The Monty Python comedy troupe were ahead of their time. I love that you seem to understand their type of comedy so, on your own time, I would highly recommend you watch their BBC comedy show "Monty Python's Flying Circus." That show has some of the funniest and most hilariously surreal comedy that has ever been broadcast over the air waves. I very much doubt you'd be disappointed at all.

I read a comment once claiming that the insults are actually fairly accurate for the time period, at least in meter and style. The words are modern, but the equivalent words for the time would have fit well. I'm not sure whether I believe it or not, but the Pythons were all highly educated so it's possible.

The Python crew were indeed ahead of their time. Their absurd humor is top notch and it's a shame they only did 3 movies before Graham passed. For some Python adjacent movies (two or more former Pythons) - A Fish Called Wanda, Erik The Viking, and much of the work of Terry Gilliam (co-director/Patsy/Old Man from Scene 24), which is a whole other list of great movies to watch. I loved the "coconut" conversation(s), the "song of Sir Robin", the Black Night scene and the "Bridge of Death" scene the most. Now, I want to tell you to not feel bad about the "going on the cart" scene ... EVERY reactor seems to have not learned about that part of history in school, or don't pick up on it when they see the scene but, there was a plague all over Europe back then (it really happened between 1346 and 1351, NOT in 932.AD) called, The Black Plague. FYI, when it hit, so many people were dying all at once that the only way to dispose of the bodies is to put them on carts, haul them away and burn them, en masse. Unfortunately, it's what really made the plague worse, because the germs were NOT killed by fire and just became airborne, making it even worse than it already was. Anyway, THAT is what that scene was referring to.

The French called him "Arthur, King" and then called the knights (he pronounced it funny, treating the "K" like a separate syllable, which the French often do, and then did something similar with the multiple consonants at the end, so Knights came out like) "Ken-Nig-its". "Are elderberries bad?" Interestingly, in medieval times, elderberry was one of the cheapest and most readily available ingredients for making alcohol, making this the equivalent of "Your dad overcooks meth" as a burn.

They couldn’t use real chain mail for their costumes because of how heavy it would be and expensive so all their chain mail is knitted yarn. They ran out of money at the end so they had to put together a different ending where the cops arrested them.

So many reactors were PISSED when they realized there was no payoff at the end. No Holy Grail, just mass arrests and most likely a murder charge. It was the PERFECT ending to a nearly perfect film. Some say Life of Brian is better, I don't. MPATHG is the OG in British silly dry humor. Glad you liked it. BTW I DO have a black knight with no arms or legs tshirt. I found it at a Goodwill. One of my prized tshirts. NI.

One of the foundational movies of slapstick comedy. It's not frequently recommended, but if you love this style of insane comedy, you'd love Weird Al's UHF. Keep it locked down JL. Great reaction as always.

the latin chant you hear the monks doing, and Arthur's clergymen do during the reveal of the Holy Hand Grenade is an excerpt from the Dies Irae which goes "Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem" which pretty much translates to "Dear Lord Jesus, please give us a break", which fits the purpose.

I lol:ed so hard at the R. Kelly joke 🤣 It's the gang themselves who wrote this movie - Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones & Terry Gilliam. The ones who directed were Gilliam & Jones. They all have background in theatre & comedy (Gilliam mostly had background in art, he's the one who made these funny cartoon segments & he's the only American in this British group) & in the 60's they had a sketch sitcom show called Monty Python's Flying Circus. This was their 1st movie together, their 2nd movie was Life of Brian & their 3rd & last movie together was Meaning of Life. Graham Chapman (King Arthur) died in 1989 & three years ago Terry Jones (Sir Bevedere & Prince Herbert) passed away. I hope you react to the other movies as well, they're also funny! 😂😉 The reason for the coconauts is because they couldn't afford more horses. Three well known music bands actually contributed to this movie's budget - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd & Genesis.

Fun fact: Eric Idle when playing the guy who's picking up dead people is asked by John Cleese's character as Arthur is "galloping" along, "Who's that then?" Idle's response "Don't know, must be a king." Cleese asks "Why"? Idle's response, "Cause he hasn't got shit all over him." That was completely ad libbed

Even the Intermission trolls the audience. If you notice it was *really* short so when people would get up and start down the aisle the movie would come back on and they'd have to hurry back to their seats. We know that the knight who killed the historian isn't one of Arthur's because none of Arthur's knights had an actual horse. The French knight's taunts are great... "you second hand electric donkey bottom biter!" In the 80s, this movie was HUGE among the geek/nerd crowd. I was in my teens when I first saw it with some friends and we'd go around quoting so many bits from it. "Tis but a scratch" and "It's just a flesh wound" were commonly used if you got hurt, etc. I think my favorite skit is the "huge tracts of land" one with the guards "not to leave, even if you come and get him". I also like how no one is even fighting back or running away when Launcelot comes through murdering the wedding party. When he first runs through the castle entrance, the guard just says "Hey!" even though the other guard is killed, etc. Some other things... if you watch in the background, you'll sometimes see people flinging cats around... beating them against walls or trying to club fish, etc.

I don’t know if anyone else said this on here, but “You’re mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries!” is actually a clever “Your Mama” joke. Hamsters have a lot of babies than any of us can imagine, so the French taunter told them their mother was a h**, and elderberries were used to make hooch, an alcoholic liquor, so he also told them their father was a drunk. I love your reactions including this one! This movie may be one of the funniest, if not the funniest (and greatest), Comedy movie of all time!
