The interesting thing about the Zorn palette is that with the colours you can actually create a decent green (Ivory Black is *slightly* blue), but mostly, the Zorn palette creates very good (pale) skin colours.

Those are great paint jobs; and Spindly von Legg, the inquisitor, is a get bit of conversion. Jay, with hundreds of Black Templar minis all painted up, "Maybe I can get something that looks like those John Blanche paintings..."

Really glad you did the second model for the shape and gesture of the model because was thinking what it really needs is like an abandon or something. That said your yellow on the marine is probably the best representation I’ve seen of translating Blanche into a model of the new kit videos going around.

I know Jay has referenced the model before in one of the Black Templar videos, but given the BT Castellan is very heavily inspired by (I believe) a Blanche Artwork I'm kinda surprised he didn't use these to paint up an artwork accurate Castellan

LOOOOVE Blanche's art. Blanche's art is so disgusting and stark. The pallette is so fascinating to work with-- I myself have used a Zorn pallette, using only warm colours and it works wonders. My Templars have blue power-sword glow-- the pallette makes the blue pop like nobody'a business. I'm also supremely excited to see what he does for Trench Crusade

I'd love to see a followup on how to integrate this palette into a more traditional paint scheme. Maybe Ultramarines would be difficult to swing, but a white-armor chapter must be doable while maintaining the Blanche vision. Very fun video, and fun paint set!

Great paintjob Jay! I love the yellow on the spacemarine, I think the blue-green shadows realle makes the warm orangy yellow pop! The red on the checkerboards feels a little thin next to it. I know it was done with a speed paint, but i would really love to see that pattern with a super saturated dark red!

I'm going to intentionally/unintentionally throw some shade on you, by saying... I really didn't think you'd come close to John Blanche art when you unveiled the paint set XD Mostly because I didn't think _anyone_ could bring a real-world mini close to that style (as you said, minis are *real things* not pictures on a flat page). However, I am __honestly__ impressed with the finished product. It actually does capture the style I remember--I got started with 40K in its 3rd Edition and this art was _everywhere_ back then, but I never saw a mini that matched the style. This Space Marine *does* and you should be proud of it. (And if I'm honest, I like it better than the inquisitor, but I'm a sucker for checkerboard patterns!)

Lovely result! The marine looks fantastic but I prefer the base on the inquisitor. It would have been interesting to see the volumes swapped on the minis, painting the marine with volume 2 and the inquisitor with vol 1, I feel like that would have been easier to work with, but they both look like they would fit in a Blanchitsu article in white dwarf. :)

Zorn palette is my jam and this seems like such a fun set. Will stick to Model colour vermillion, Game colour extra opaque heavy goldbrown (now OOP, go buy what you can find it is 10/10), heavy body titanium white and citadel Abaddon black. So much fun to find creative ways by limiting yourself.

This was really interesting, and I liked the paintjobs, especially the inquistor 👍 I would love to see you incorporate these colours into "regular" paintschemes. My favourite picks would be dark angels where I feel the dark green and the reds can do something interesting. Alternatively some necrons with classic green glow, just because I have a hard time picturing how that should work.

I think as a "professionally trained" artist, the biggest miss on this video was not actually using the Zorn palette - just using four colors you labled as needed for the palette. The "zorn palette" isn't JUST four colors, but a mixing exercise. You get better by using those four colors in different amounts combined to create the tones you need.

Yeah, I think Blanchitsu style is best applied to heavily kitbashed minis. The guys over at Grimdark Compendium push this idea to the absolute limit. I've never liked Blanche's art (from an art perspective), but I think he definitely produced the "vibe" of 40K more than any other artist. I think GW is moving far away from their punk-rock roots and that's includes the art. It's so wildly lazy/uninteresting now that it's sad.
