Rolling shutter or not? That's the big question. If there is a rolling shutter effect with the Canon EOS R5, how bad is it and does it make sense to use the electronic shutter for action bird photography?
A lot of you asked me this question, so I tested it out and will share my findings with you today and share when I think it makes sense to use the electronic shutter and when it's best not to use it.
What is your experience with electronic shutters? Let me know in the comments! Have you used it for Bird or wildlife photography?
Let me help you to take YOUR IMAGES to the NEXT LEVEL!

Great video as always!!!!!! I thought about switching to the new Canon R5 mk ii, but the price tag is HUGE!! I'm still paying the loan for the camera and the lens (Sigma 60-600mm). There's an option for trade-in, but it will still be a huge price... The main reason I'm switched from Canon 5D mk IV to the R5 was fast shutter speed, not to use the mechanical shutter. I'm a documentary aviation and Navy photographer A month ago, I gave the camera to the lab because I started to get blurry images after updating the firmware 2.0. They said she's "fine", you should use a mechanical shutter to photograph a helicopter with more than 1/1200s (really? That will freeze the rotor..). I'm using Electronic 1st Curtain, I saw a video on KZbin that it's better.. What's your opinion? Thanks!

I actually figured it out not because of any difference in quality, but because the changes in the feathers on one of the shots could have only been caught using a very fast shutter. Quality appeared to be the same. Thank you for this.

Hi Jan. Great video. I did some tests with my R6 and got that at higher SS there is some lost of light with Electronic shutter mode special at high shutter speeds (1/500 +). My test results (with ISO 100, M mode, One Shot, all photos processed in dpp4 converted to monochrome and all lens corrections disabled, sharpness and noise reduction set to 0) were: At 1/8000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,70 and -1,20, compared to Mechanical; At 1/2000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,20 and -0,35, compared to Mechanical; At 1/500 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,05 and -0,10, compared to Mechanical; Under 1/500 the EV loss is further less and less noticeable. With the EFC Shutter mode the results are between Mechanical and Electronic shutter. Any thoughts about that?

Paul - I've found it in stock at UK Camera Club, for £100 less than the suggested price every other store has. The online reviews are all amazing, but it is a new store on my radar so I am apprehensive about making an order. They don't mention the Free adaptor via Canon, but do give 2 year warranties. I may just hold off for now until it is in stock everywhere.

Yes I am testing r5 as well now. A good test for rolling shutter is hummingbirds as they flip their wings over 20 times a second. Many cameras struggle with electronic shutter and hummies and wings starting to look crazy crooked and sometimes double imposed.

Great video Jan. I’ve seen pictures of hummingbirds with electronic shutter and the wings were quite distorted. The other scenario I’ve heard can be problematic is fast panning with vertical lines in the background like if you were panning with a bif with trees in the background. You covered these scenarios well.

I used the electronic shutter in the yard with small birds and haven't seen any major issues. I agree with you and will keep the shutter on mechanical for safety -- plus 12fps is plenty high and buffer is better. But certainly good to have for those instances you want to be stealth and sneak up on a bird that may not be super active - i.e. roosting owl. 😁

Thanks for the review/comparison. I just received my R5 Thursday. I used it to shoot a baseball game on Friday. I only used mechanical shutter for that contest to avoid any potential issues with the rolling electronic shutter. From what I have seen with other reviews, the fast panning of a moving subject with vertical objects in the background (goal posts on a football field for example) you could see the slanting effect. Or for sports with fast moving balls (football, soccer, baseball) some images with the electronic shutter can cause the ball to look deformed (round ball oblong, and a football shape changed). I have to test it myself for the games I cover to see if I notice anything that would ruin an image. For sports, I'm usually shooting wide-open so the background is often so blurred the vertical stationery objects may not be too noticeable. I may shoot a couple innings in Electronic Shutter mode next game and then review them at 100% to see if I can see any of the rolling shutter effects. Too bad there wasn't an option to pick a slower FPS with Electronic shutter. 12 FPS is fast enough for me, and it would be nice to compare images all shot at 12FPS on my R5 in both Electronic & Mechanical, as well as the 12FPS of my 1Dx. I did notice that even with the battery grip holding 2 batteries, I was about out of juice before the baseball game finished with the R5. This never happens with my 1DX, so the battery life is still an issue for me with my R5 as far as sports is concerned. I kept the screen turned towards the camera on the R5, to save battery and only shot using the viewfinder.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, you will definitely get some rolling shutter in those shots. I get it with faster flying birds flying in certain angles. Not terrible, but you can notice it. But worth a try. What kills the batteries on the R5 is not so much the amount of images taken, but the time the camera is simply on and running. I assume you have to keep it on during the whole game, so that will drain the batteries pretty fast. I always try to carry two spares with me. If you don't need 20fps, you're probably best off with the mechanical shutter, although the electronic shutter seems to deliver the best AF accuracy.

(in electronic shutter mode) if you're panning with a subject, like a bird, and the background is just clouds, even if the clouds are out of focus, it wouldn't really matter if the clouds are distorted due to rolling shutters, HOWEVER... say... you're shooting a car race and you're panning with a car, if there are any poles or and building structures in the background... you're going to see all those vertical lines leaning, even if they are out of focus.

I've been testing on the older Canon 500 F/4 L IS, and have noticed some pretty bad AF for BIF. It really depends. Overall it was quite slow for me / lagging behind. Yesterday i tried to lock seagulls on a blue sky, using all AF cases / diff AF point combos/full auto and single point/etc. But it kept hunting and would show red box/not even get close to being in focus. I tried again today with ducks in a pond and it was also quite rough. When i switch back to 1DX, was pretty night and day as far as af speed/tracking. Animal eye AF is quite good though and worked really well for smaller birds/ducks swimming and such. So that is nice to see and I hope they can further improve it. I also noticed pretty bad lag/"slide show" when shooting mechanical in the EVF/Etc, using high speed continuous with 128GB CF Express Card (1+GB/s) and using highest EVF Refresh. I would often get behind the bird/lagging behind. Using Silent 20FPS is much smoother/better, but then if you are panning quickly, i saw skewing/rolling shutter in a good amount of shots, although not always. It really depends. But i tried at even 1/5000th shutter speed and still saw some rolling shutter. I will test my 100-400II more today/tomorrow and maybe my 70-200 F/4 L IS and see how it does, before I send back my rental. Maybe newer lenses are alot better, or i'd expect so. I did also have the R5 lockup / crash and restart on my twice today in 20 min, when bursting with my 500 lens. Edit; It also appears that IBIS does not work with my 500 / 100-400II that i can tell. Even if you disable the lens IS, you can't do IBIS like I think sony/other brands may let you do. Or at least i could with metabones adapter. Which is unfortunate. Not sure why they can't do IBIS + those EF lenses, but seems to be the case. Is disabled in the menu / says not available for this lens.
@mattli911
@mattli911 4 жыл бұрын
Here's some examples of what I saw. Using longer lens and panning quickly as you would need to for BIF. Even at high shutter speeds, against the tree/blue sky, you can see the tree slanting/falling behind as I pan. The tree naturally is straight up and down, not tilted.. If these links work anyways... imgur.com/JwKEXG4 imgur.com/a/tTVcr2p

Some other thoughts about the R5. The ergonomics are very nice overall / I much prefer it to Sony/other mirrorless bodies I've tried. Feels alot like a 5D / 7DII in the hands. Not much smaller I think, but pretty light! Battery life has been.... so so .. sometimes it's been pretty good (1500-2k shots), but depends on the situation/how much are using IBIS/lens IS/etc. I have a custom button to keep turning off the rear LCD, so not wasting power and because it leaves my lens IS running non stop and I don't want to start to walk and jolt it and somehow break my lens IS. Although when you have the rear LCD/EVF off and go to look in the viewfinder, it can take 1-2 seconds for it to wake up and that might be too late/too long to catch a BIF approaching/flying by. The EVF is nice and high res/ no issues there really. Although I did have some pretty BAD lens flare yesterday in the sun, when it was sort of behind me. I could barely see what I was doing in the EVF. I switched back to my 1DX to see if I had the same issue , but it had basically 0 lens flare and was much brighter/easier to see using the optical in that case. Not sure if because the EVF is not inset as far or shallower eye cup or no idea. But it was pretty bad sometimes with the R5 in that situation. Getting into Video mode is a bit weird/somewhat annoying. I'm not sure if you can change it either, that I saw so far. You have to press in the top right dial, then hit Info button, and THEN you can set your Video settings. Also when I hit record buttton in stills mode, it was using some random video settings at first. I had to setup my video settings how I wanted, find the Custom Settings stuff in the menu, and set Custom Mode 3 to pickup my current video settings and THEN it used that when i hit record in stills mode... very weird. I set the DOF Preview button to toggle One Shot / AI Servo. It works differently than it has on my DSLRs. Normally you hold it down to be in One Shot and let go and you're back in AI Servo. But on the R5, it's a toggle, where you have to press it twice to go back and forth. You can't just hold it down anymore. It's not a HUGE deal, but something to get used to/take note of, and can be a little more finicky if trying to do that on the fly instead of just letting go of the DOF button and are back in AI Servo.

Hey, So you used the normal AF mode for BIF, not the Animal eye AF? the AF will definitely be slower with the older lenses. It works on all lenses, but there's a list of lenses that are officially supported. You probably do, but did you turn the image review in the viewfinder turned off? The only time I noticed my EVF to become "sluggish" was with the 600 + 2x TC in low light. Roughly how many images could you take in a burst? there's a big difference between the Cfexpress cards and for most brands only the 512Gb+ cards are super fast. The smaller cards seem to write a lot slower. It's definitely smoother in the electronic mode, but for general usage, I think mechanical will yield better results as you say. If you turn the IS off, IBIS will be turned off, too. If it's never available, it must be incompatible with that lens. :(

Great point! I have the same 500 f4 IS and I´m thiking to buy a R5/R6, but I´m not sure how AF works with this 500. Do you prefer AF to focus birds or use direct the Animal Eye AF? How R5 autofocus works with 100-400? AF works better than dslr? I actually do a lot of video with the 5DIV and Im thinking to upgrade to canon or sony mirrorles. I would appreciate your opinion. :)

wow... that was a pretty dramatic presentation of electronic shutter "rolling" limitation. Excellent capture work I think this is the first video i've seen that focused on the photography prowess of the R5... almost everything else has simply shown the video side. i think the rolling shutter, even with a slow pan creates enough distortion that i can't see it being yet an serious option for sports shooters... hopefully the R1 will address this..or i'll be sticking with my 1D series

That was very good. I'd like to propose a couple additional tests. 1) You mentioned it at the end but hummingbirds are something that I might shoot as a "real" subject. Drone propellers are good for illustration but it is unlikely to be something I would actually shoot. Then increment the shutter speed 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/3000, etc. and, 2) Test the rolling shutter with 8K video and grab stills from footage - both to test the rolling shutter and the quality of the image. I'd do this myself but, alas, my R5 is still on backorder. :-(
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 4 жыл бұрын
Can't get my hands on any hummingbirds here unfortunately. The drone was kinda the closest I could fine hehe. You are correct about the shutter speed, that will likely have an effect. What would be the advantage in your opinion of taking stills from a video? TO make it work you would have to be happy to not be able to use the video for anything other than stills, due to the shutter speed. I hope you will get your camera soon!
@amendegw
@amendegw 4 жыл бұрын
@@jan_wegener You would get 29.97 fps in 8K video without any buffer filling (at least with the US specs). I'm sure this would be more of a academic test as I understand the overheating issues. I wonder whether there are any differences between the rolling shutter in still captures vs video. Thanks for excellent KZbin videos!

I like your review. I might get an R5 and use some EF lenses I used on other brands via adapters. I have a 24-105; 135; and a 90mm Makro. If I use these lenses in crop mode I get 215mm; and 135mm coverage with the primes at F2 max F stop. I am looking at the F2 28-70mm zoom. So all these lenses have 2 ranges using 1.6x crop and max aperture F2.0 3 lenses do the work of 6 lenses. Crop mode gives still 17 megapixels plenty.

Thanks for this dig into rolling shutter on the R5. My take away is that if you need 20 fps or electronic shutter for action, buy the Sony A9/A9ii. Now, if I can find a deep dive on the AF comparison between the R5 and the A9ii, I will know which camera to rent for my trials.

I used electronic shutter while shooting small birds for the first time yesterday and before viewing your video on this very subject. While I didn't encounter the rolling shutter issue I did run into another problem. The electronic shutter would not stay in the selected mode. I would set it in the menu, hit SET, shoot and then wait a few minutes to observe the birds. The next time I went to use the camera it reverted to the mechanical shutter mode. What up with this??? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but what? This just seems so simple and straightforward. Always appreciate your videos, btw!

Excellent as always. Great information. Static vs moving are key messages to introduce or reduce rolling shutter effect. For airplane with propellers, I would use lower shutter speed like 1/100 or 1/60 to blur the propellers for motion look. Rolling shutter may not affect that. I forgot to mention that the Electronic Shutter Mode only has 12 bit, hence dynamic range and image quality will be slightly worse. I can't say I could tell the difference in the RAW files, though.
@ts76751
@ts76751 4 жыл бұрын
I was actually going to say this since you didn’t mention it in the vid. Also the mechanical shutter in Hi+ mode has 13 bit. For the 14 bit raw you have to use Hi mode or slower. I saw a dynamic range comparison chart, and it looks like the electronic has up to 2 stops better dynamic range at base iso. However the difference gets smaller when you raise the iso. From iso 800 and above according to the test, the dynamic range is identical between shutter modes. I can’t see me shooting birds below 800 iso so I think it’ll be just fine. It could be an issue in landscape photography where you want maximum DR at base iso. But then you don’t need high frame rates shooting landscapes

Thanks for this very informative video, Jan! I was wondering the exact thing in your comment here about the loss of dynamic range and image quality suffering when in electronic shutter compared to mechanical shutter. I was hoping you'd address this in the video above, but you didn't mention it, other than here in the comment. I had heard that with Electronic Shutter, that you get lower quality images, compared to the same image shot with the mechanical shutter, all things being equal. Is this because it's shot at 12bit? Is there any way you can do a side by side comparison of a static subject, maybe your toy cockatoo, with both electronic shutter, and mechanical shutter, at different ISO's from 100 all the way up to extremely high ISO's, and then show what they look like full frame and at 100% (i.e. 1:1)? And then give your real world thoughts on if there's any noticeable difference on both dynamic range and image quality and noise, or how much difference there is. This would be very informative.

@@jan_wegener It's how we photograph migrating birds from our counting station. Sure, they are not all in focus like with the R5 in your review, but over time you get the experience to track the birds (handheld to have maximum freedom of movement). You need to shoot birds with a lot more wing flapping than the gulls. They tend to glide a lot with slower wing beats. Try it with fidgety honeyeaters or a bird flapping its wings fast. The good thing is the e-shutter is usable for a lot of action on the Canon R5 unlike on the Nikon Z7/Z6 or Sony A7RIV/III and A7III. But the Sony A9 is the ultimate camera for e-shutter. Hopefully next gen we get global shutter sensor or at least stacked sensors from Canon.

@@jan_wegener Just for reference, the Canon R5 sensor scan speed is ~ 1/60s, while the Sony A9 is 1/160 and the Sony A7RIII/A7III is only about 1/16s same as the Nikon Z6/Z7. So the Canon is 3x faster than most but 2.5x slower than the A9. The other good test is a golf swing or propeller. The Sony A9 can record a golf swing with almost no distortion. Also for reference the mechanical shutter scan speed is about 1/300s which is why it's still the best. Global shutter will be the ultimate as whole sensor is read in one go rather than in stripes.

Thank you for the review. Appreciated very much. Just bought R5 and working as expect. Using EF 100-400m MkII lens and seems that the IS working almost all the time when the camera switched on. Is it normal? What about the battery lifetime? I expect that the IS start running when the back button focus pushed. (like 5D Mk IV what I had before)

On a mirrorless the IS runs whenever it is on

Thanks. Very informative. How do you lower the frames/second in the electronic shutter mode? I can't find that setting!!

You can't. It gives you the option, but it stays at 20 fps. I said that incorrectly. I just assumed it let's you do it, because it gives you the option

Sony A1 sensor reads 15 times faster than R5, also does flash sync with electric shutter. So basically R5s' electronic shutter is a secondary option, it's there if we really need, be can't be as reliable as Sony's

yes, I am generally treating it as a secondary option and would with all cameras at this stage.

That is why I kept my A9 for its near-perfect electronic shutter.
