Another great video Jan. I live in Canada now, but grew up in Melbourne & I really hope lockdown ends soon as speaking with my family still in Melb it is bloody awful. I shoot the same gear as you (600mm f4ii), except prior to the R5 I used a 1Dx2 instead of 5D4. Got my R5 at the end of Sep and found your setup video invaluable - thank you! Your earlier video where you said the R5 was noticeably slower for AF to lock on with extenders filled me with despair as I shoot with the 1.4xIII 99% of the time. And, when I did comparison tests (1Dx2+1.4 vs R5+1.4) on the same static subjects, I agreed with your initial conclusion...the 1Dx2 snapped on to focus faster vs the R5, with the AF speed difference most obvious in low light. That said, when I was out shooting in the field, I didn't really notice the AF speed of the R5...but I suspect that's because (a) the AF is pretty fast on the R5+1.4iii anyway, and (b) it's very hard to do exact comparisons in the field because with live birds and changing light you literally need the two bodies shooting simultaneously to do a fair comparison, and (c) I haven't picked up my 1Dx2 in 3 weeks and have perhaps become accustomed to the AF speed of the R5 and now consider it 'normal' :). All that said, I'd love it if you could do a side-by-side compare of the AF speed (R5+1.4 vs 5D4+1.4) on a static subject in the same light as I really value your expert opinion. All that said, I'm really enjoying the R5 and the Animal-eye tracking really does live up to expectations. If you get bored, you can see some of my first R5 images here: www.flickr.com/photos/timjhopwood/ Again, love your work & can't wait until lockdown is over and you can get out and really put the R5 through its paces :).

Great Jan... what about the 1st Curtain shutter? Is this equal to the mechanical or full electronic? I am having trouble understanding. I am using the 600mm II and 1.4X III for birds in flight and am finding what you discovered, that every 4th etc... shot is just a tiny bit out of focus and I did not know why... much more pronounced with deep crops. Thanx for the discovery!

Could it be shutter shock, rather than a variation in focus, that causes the missed images with the mechanical shutter? Perhaps testing with manual focus and a fixed target would prove this one way or the other...

That could be one possibility. After all the shutter keeps going up and down.
@Smauges
@Smauges 3 жыл бұрын
@@jan_wegener It is, Canon Sweden has confirmed it is and it is most noticeble at shutterspeeds around 1/20-30 s, somewhere around that area. In slower shutterspeeds it does not get noticed by the high megapixel sensor and not at faster speeds. This is the reason all new R5 and R6 are coming with EFC as standard mode as that remove the problem, maybe not in fast burst, if you shot fast burst in these half slow shutter speeds you better of using the electronic shutter which is not affected. :) How do you like the camera and I.Q with your 600 f4? I think it's excellent with my Sigma 500 f4, specially if you get close enough to the birds and the AF is brilliant :)
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
@@Smauges Well, at 1/400 and above one would think it shouldn't make a difference, but it does. In the slow shutter speeds, you have to use EFC or it will be very blurry. The IQ quality is pretty nice, especially at high ISO

Hi Jan, just want to say your series of R5 videos is very comprehensive and useful. I have found the same issues you describe - that the Mechanical Shutter mode is less consistent than the 2 Electronic modes - but in my case (when I really pixel peek at test detail) the MS shots were always a tiny bit lower in detail than Electronic. I actually ended up returning the R5 because of this. The obvious choice in modes would to me seem to be use First Curtain Elec. used at less than max frame rate - so that you still have 14 bit images. HOWEVER now to my question and a suggestion for one of your excellent tests? The Canon R5 User Manual states that in Electronic modes - and I think specifically first curtain "defocussed image areas may be incomplete when shooting near max. aperture at high shutter speeds" and that in this scenario "shoot with option other than electronic first curtain". As a lot of bird photography is done in these settings - I just wondered if you might be able to try and replicate this scenario described by Canon and see what happens? I can understand rolling shutter distorting a fast moving bird in flight (but it would still be interesting to see what this looks like in reality) but the incomplete background issue just sounds bizarre. Sorry for such a long message - but as you do the best R5 bird videos - thought you were the best man for the job!

Jan, thank you for sharing your expertise. I am a novice photographer and enjoy your videos as they help me improve. I certainly am no expert in the photography department so I apologize in advance if these questions/suggestions are off base. If I understand correctly, your hide is on the opposite side of the perch than those apple slices enticing your colorful friends to your nice backyard. I wonder if setting your feeding dishes between the perch and your hide would encourage the subjects to face you more when they land? Do you think any of the motion blurr could be coming from the perch moving under the weight of the birds when they land? I suppose some of that is to be expected and unavoidable when shooting birds landing on tree limbs and such since vegetation is less stable than a large rock. Is there anything you can do to stiffen your perch to minimize it shaking when birds land and hop around on it?
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Russ, nice observation. In fact I placed the bowl to the opposite side, so the birds have their tail on my side of the perch, rather than facing me. IDeally they have the tail on my side and then turn sideways for my preferred pose. Perches and birds will always move a little bit. Only thing to counteract that is faster shutter speeds, which can be difficult to achieve in darker environments

Hi Jan, thanks for all of these great bird photo videos, learning a lot! Loving my R5 as well. Wondering why you don't just increase your ISO to get your shutter speed and aperture where you want them when shooting? I assume you are worried about noise, but going from say 3200 to 6400 shouldn't be that much noisier, and of course there is de-noise post processing software. I assume you find that the lower ISO image is still better than higher ISO even with de-noising?

Thanks Jan for another great video - very much appreciate the time you put in to share your knowledge & experience photographing birds & the equipment you use.I’m thinking of buying the R6 & was wondering which telephoto is the best pairing for it - the RF 100-500 with a 1.4 extender or an EF lens which of course would need the adapter- I would consider an extender in either case as well. Obviously the converter & extender work ok together.?

I’m after the R6 & thought of the RF 100-500 but not sure how it would perform with the teleconverters especially the 2x. ( some say not so good) The EF lens I would look at would be the 400mm f4 ( second hand). I’d like to get to 800mm reach as I photograph lots of small birds. Certainly leaning towards the RF lens at this stage- also wondering if canon will release any new RF lenses next year?

@noelchignell1048
@noelchignell1048 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan I wonder if the very low shutter speed is what is causing problems for you with the mechanical shutter especially - any vibration caused by the shutter will cause some camera shake with the long lens and a high shutter speed will fix this I would think Bit puzzled why you've chosen 1/400 sec instead of say 1/1000 or 1/2000 and let the iso go higher , the R5 seems to cope very well with high isos. Slightly wider aperture would be better than slow shutter Even for perched birds my starting point is 1/4000 sec and f/8 and auto iso (I almost never use a tripod though as I'm almost always out on about shooting birds handheld and if I'm lucky enough to spot a bird at home there's no time to set up my tripod) I'd rather have sharp focus than low iso personally as there's no way to fix out of focus. Also repeating the sunrise clip over and over is pretty boring Thanks Noel
@jan_wegener

To get to 1/1000 + I'd have to use ISO 16000 or more and even with the good R5 sensor that results in a lot of loss of fine detail. With the 2x Wide open is F8. If I get 1/400 F 6.3 ISO 6400 like in one image. I'd have to use ISO 25600 to get to 1/1250.The image I get then is definitely worse than the ones I get at 6400. It's not like all images were blurry. ISO and shutter speed is always a trade off. But personally I see the 6400+ range as an emergency only range.

So you bought an $11,000 lens to take pictures of birds in your garden?

Hi Jan, thank you for such an informative and awesome video. Loved watching your patience and execution. If you dont mind, I just had a quick question. So I just got my R5 and I always use a EF100-400m2 for my bird photography. Have you noticed any loss of focus points or other issues when using this combo (r5 and 100-400) WITH either of the extenders?

Thank you, glad you liked it. What do you mean when you say loss of focus points?

@@jan_wegener Hey Jan, thanks for getting back to me so fast! Sorry, I don't think I did a good job explaining my question. I know with certain lenses when combined with the EF extenders, you can only use single or central autofocus points. I'm not sure if it's lens dependent or body dependent. Have you noticed anything like this with your R5 and 100-400 with the extenders?

@@WuBr94 That is something that was only true with DSLR cameras. Mirrorless have much better AF systems and you keep most points even at F11 wide open.

Amazing shots, Jan! I just got my 800mm f/11 and soon to receive the 2x RF teleconverter to pair. May I ask, can you tell me how to set up my backyard, which is actually located on a bird sanctuary, on the waterfront in South Florida? I would LOVE to get some of these shots from the confront of my home.

I have made a few videos about my backyard set ups and also written an ebook about how to attract birds. That might help, too. Usually offering some food or water can be a good start. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmnIeZWhn92MfdE aviscapes.com/attracting-birds/
